For some time I have used customs for live work. Previously, I've used Shure earpieces which were fine for what they were being used for and The fit was sorted out by the powers that be.
I got these Sennheiser IE8's which are not cheap but they immediately impressed me. Particularly the bass weight and presence. Also, they can be played loud, without that horrible piercing tinny top end that many iem's can produce.
I played around with all kinds of tips and some worked pretty well, but in the end, I felt that they were good enough to go custom.
Boy does it pay off. I had new ear mouldings done to make sure that it was right since I occasionally have had fit problems at work but not particularly bothered. Before you ask, when I'm working, they are connected to a radio pack in my pocket which receives a specially mixed down version of what goes out and the sound guys turn my own particular feed up in my earpiece to whatever volume I want so that I can hear myself very clearly in the band. Outside, it's mixed a different way to what I'm hearing but it alleviates all kinds of problems like wall reflections/delays or worst of all, not actually being able to hear yourself and best guessing your timing. (That makes the band sound awful if you try that one!!)
Anyway, Boots got one ear right the first time round and the company making the earpieces asked me to get one ear done again because they weren't convinced it was right. So off I went and had another ear mould done. This time, it was right and I sat and waited for my new earpieces.
Well, I've been listening for a little while now on them and the IE8 now sound like full sized headphones. The difference is fantastic. Full bodied, hard hitting bass and a lovely warm treble up top.
I would advise anyone considering high quality portable music to go just a little further and have a pair of customs made. They make a good earpiece sound fantastic and what's even nicer, they stay in your ear even when you eat (or sing) and after a while, you forget they are actually in there because they fit!!
This firm deal with anyone and not just industry people and Boots can do the moulds for you and they send them off to this firm for you. You just wait for them to arrive.
ACS Custom Sleeves - 01295 266665 (four sixes) They do a custom fit for ie8's and some other good earpieces and also produce their own for musicians. Currently they fit, Shure, Klipsch and Etymotic Research. (plus their own)
I don't think I'll ever use iem's without a custom fit again to be honest. Sure it adds to the cost of the iem, but the sound is absolutely right.
I think I'll fit my Klipsch's as well. Totally different quality of sound.
