I think the most popular layout will be;
Transformer(s), psu board(s) in one case.
The JLHs and amplifier boards in another. Your main concern here is the size of heatsinks required, which will be the size-of the-side-panel kind of thing.

Hi Dave, Chris is right in his summary - once case for the PSU and another for the amp, although there is nothing wrong with building it all in one big case. Doing this will just make it a more complicated build - although this is no problem for you Alex posted pictures of his build in either this thread or the SC Class A thread (which turned into the AK Class A HA build) and Shaun posted pics of his as well. I think he used a 4U modushop beasty for the amp www.modushop.biz/ecommerce/cat081_l2.php?n=1 - it's important to remember that this amp dissipates 80W, although only 15W of music power. Of course there is the Alan route as well, where you build the case yourself and all the more impressive for it!

Hi Will, I guess that the first sentence means it will be useful in the winter as a space heater as well as entertainment . That's b*ggered it for me as my woodworking skills are much better than my metalworking ones ;D ;D . Not being the sort that worries too much about appearance as long as it's tidy, I have 3 toroidal linear PSUs, each with it's own JLH RE, encased in a single white enamelled steel industrial burglar alarm box complete with fused power input picked up off feepay for buttons, so I might explore that possibility again. Easy to spray it matt black if needs be . Necessity is the mother of invention . Dave.

Hi Dave,
I will be using 2 of those for my Balanced CLass D HA output resistors network. Already bought locally but didn't do it up yet.
I still suggest that you go for one of those more normal casing for a Class A amp as your new plenty of ventilation. Those you linked to will take up nuch time to do up the ventilation holes. The normal case usually you can buy one with ventilation holes already. Also, don't those Ebay ones look forlorn and phatetic on your hifi closet or rack?
Cheers to your diy.

Hi Gents,
I've updated the online GB chart with the LS and Output device info. Same link as before.

Hi Everyone
I plan on placing the pcb order on Saturday, as that's when I'll be back home, and have access to the files required. All set to go!
Going from previous orders, they should be here the end of August - start of September.
I'm currently putting the BOM's together which will be similar to the one I did for the class A HA. The main differences is that they'll be available as downloads and also on-line, using that site we are using for the GB info. Also, rather than being prescriptive with capacitor types etc, the link will normally bring up a Farnell page with the correct value/size components for you to choose from. So for example for the tank caps on the PSU, it shows all makes of 10,000uF cap, of the correct pitch, correct voltage and up to the max. diameter of 30mm. This will hopefully give people a better idea of what is required so that they can source from elsewhere for cheaper, whilst having confidence that it's the right thing.

I was recently very privileged to hear Alex's Class A set up. I can tell you lot now that you're going to be in for a treat! The two main areas of excellence that did it for me were speed and clarity. Not fatiguing in any way, but frankly remarkable. Interestingly, neither the main amp or the HA were housed in HUUUUUGE enclosures, nor was there blistering heat in the vicinity of the set up. This is an amp that can be housed in a modest chassis and yet still fill a decent-sized room with sufficiently loud music. Clearly, if you have the metal, you could crank up the bias a bit and enjoy some space-heating, but I am wondering, having heard what Alex's kit can do, if that is entirely necessary. Jolly nice work!

Hi Jon Thanks for the kind words. Are you able to measure the value of small inductors such as used in the Zobel network ? Recently a friend of Geoff's tested an amplifier from Geoff that used my recycled modules and was surprised that the square wave response didn't go a little higher. This was despite decreasing the Zobel network components from the original 6.8uH and 150nF to 4.7uH (approx.) and 100nF. It would appear that even Douglas Self has now gone from 6uH and 100nF, to 2.3uH and 100nF with no problems evident on bench testing. Perhaps reducing the number of turns on the Zobel to give say 3.3uH or thereabouts, could be worth trying, as many people these days also play high resolution files, not just CD at 16/44.1 ? Kind Regards Alex P.S. Simply halving the number of turns will give more like 2.3uH

FWIW I've dealt with this seller before and got excellent service and item. I would need some guidance though as to whether either is suitable for our needs. Dave.

Dave just a reply about more info on that case "hello The front panel 8mm.the back.Top and baseplate 3mm,the heatsink size:300*40*90mm Regards - along1986090" With the size of the heatsinks. not sure.. Did ask about this too.. www.ebay.com/itm/Full-aluminum-Power-amp-Enclosure-Case-W-320mm-X-H-90mm-X-D-300mm-/110920074518?pt=US_Amplifier_Parts_Components&hash=item19d35a0516answer hello front panel thickness 8mm,top and baseplate 3mm, back panel 3mm Heatsink size:300X50X85mm.(substrate 10mm) the blank front panel or back panel are also available. Regards - along1986090 Should be ok. heatsink wise, but smaller case, confirm with others about internal size needed.

Nice looking enclosures. Has anyone done a price for price comparison with HIFI2000 and the PFM discount code?
Cheers

Hi Guys, As a previous customer (lol ;D ) I'll ask the seller if we did a GB (with individual delivery addresses) could he offer us any price breaks for increased quantities - I'll keep you posted but it's a long shot, not least because I don't know whether either would be suitable at this stage, but it might be worth asking the question. Dave.

Hi Guys, With reference to my post immediately above I have received the following response from the seller: -
"hello if Send to different UK address, the postage will be more expensive than send to same one address.one of this case send to UK the postage will need about 75USD.but if you need more,I can give you some discount on the units price."
Not a clincher but something to bear in mind perhaps? Dave.

The original heatsinks were specified as 300 (W) x 75 (H) x 49mm (D) The case that I am using is 405 (W) x 75 (H) x 305 (D) (The 305mm measurement includes the thickness of the front panel) As Jon can verify, it doesn't run unduly warm. Alex
