I've hit a slight case construction problem/dilema. With the heatsinks I have for the ouput devices I cannot get the devices to line up perfectly on gaps between fins! If I have one lined up the other MUST fall directly under a fin Before I go in and attack, are there any bright ideas on how to create sufficient room in a sink-fin to fit a nut on its mounting screw, or t'other way around? Apart from an over-sized hole! Ta Hi Chris I had a minor problem like that with Will's PCBs for the 15W and PSU PCBs too. I think the spacing between the output devices mounting holes may have been slightly different to the original. If one mounting hole is dead centre , you may be able to elongate/enlarge it in the opposite direction a little to help with the other one. Make 100% sure that the devices are still isolated from the metalwork after the operation. I presume that you corrected the speaker earth return track problem as described originally ?
Kind Regards Alex

I managed to slightly tweak that idea as it did seem the only solution despite not wanting to do so at first. By grinding off a flat facet to the bolt heads all the way down to thread level and inserting from the outside with the flat facet against the fin. This kept the hole elongating minimal and to only two out of four holes.
Yes, the track correction was done when the problem was originally identified.

Hi Chris It's a shame that such a tiny detail made so much extra work. Where an external PSU is used with the set of PSU PCBs you are likely to run into the same problem. Let's hope that you find all the cost and trouble worth it as Shaun and Dave K did. Although my RG versions are fully tested and have been tried in situ, I reverted back to my originals during the fault finding process in the PCB itself, and I am still using the originals many years later, where they are in use for a couple of hours every day while watching DTV. If properly constructed the RG versions should also be problem free for many years of service. Kind Regards Alex

At long last, after several years delay, I finally tried the Cree C3D06060A 600V 6A diodes , instead of the more expensive C3D8060A 600V 10A as Shawn originally recommended for use in the dual PSUs for the 15W Class A amplifier. As usual, Shawn's observations were correct and these diodes sound better than the MUR810 that they replaced. There is even a small further improvement in ambience with local DTV "Soapies". The 2 smaller 18-0-18 30VA transformers supply AC to the associated Class A Preamplifier.

I've been wanting to try out UTSource for small part orders and this is a perfect opportunity! 8 x Cree C3D06060A @ $13.60 including standard post. I'll let you know how it works out.

Hi Chris I should have used UTSource too and saved some money, as I find them very good to deal with. However , the lure of quick delivery from RS won me over this time. Don't expect to hear night and day changes with them, but all of these little improvements add up as Shaun verified, and you also verified with the SC DAC. Regards Alex
P.S. M.C. said this in part of a reply to me yesterday in HFC forum. You were of course the other person that I referred to in my replies.

It's been a few years coming, literally! cj towers has finally produced an Aclass 15w that makes moozac I had a few head scratching moments on the way that Alex kindly set me straight on and thus it is here... Now ahead of the pre-amp because it has a proper case, though not finished. In this shot it was on final test for bias, stable at full running temperature. The couple together... ...and finally linked to some serious kick-arse speakers! I did take an internal shot but it came out fuzzy I'll get one when I put a finish on the case. Amazingly, even on the daft little speakers it actually sounds pretty good and can fill the restaurant with a reasonable level of sound!!! I was also shocked to hear things on a couple of recordings that I hadn't noticed before, can't wait to get the proper speakers on...

Hi Chris: Sandyk put me onto UT Source for 2SC5171's. No US supplier has them in stock & delivery is at least 16+ weeks out. UT delivered in just under 3 weeks. The price was right @ $0.83ea., for a quantity of 16 pieces.

Hi Chris I like the use of single RG designed JLHs right next to the PSU IN of the PCBs.(seen in your album) It's a shame they are no longer available, I am holding on to my remaining couple.
Kind Regards Alex

Ok, here's the inside... I had a look through my SF12 stash but they were all very close in VF and also very close to the maximum quoted, therefore I saw no point in swapping out at this point to an attempt to improve FEB.

That's a beast of a thing Chris, very nice indeed! Now for the difficult question...... what does it sound like?

Hi Mike,
I've had very little time with it but what I can say is that I'm hearing things via speakers that I have never heard from my system before, some tracks have left me literally jaw-dropped. It produces an amazing sound stage as well, even at lower volumes the room is filled with great music rather than coming from two points. I'm well impressed!

Hi Chris It's a good feeling when it all comes together isn't it ? What you need now is even better source material, perhaps after further improving your CD ripping capabilities ? (wink, wink)
Kind Regards Alex
