Hi Alan, Like everyone, I'm stunned with your DIY efforts, truely amazing stuff . Scares me though as with the time and effort reqiuired to build one of these amps from scratch, I might have to wait until I retire as well, and that's a couple of years away yet for me. cheers.. jeffc

Hi Jeff Just do it a bit at a time. You did a good job with the preamp, so this will be easier because of that. Metalwork is always a P.I.T.A. though, but you would be using commercial heatsinks, and your PCBs will be ready made too.The PSU is separate, so that can be done individually. The PSU should be a snack too, after that humongous one you made. Kind Regards Alex

Hi Jeff, I must admit when I last looked inside my AK SCHA/Pre I thought, "Jesus! I don't want to build that again". Then committed myself to a full build of both HA/Pre and Power Amp for my elder son, how mad can one get? However it's like Alex says, just do it a bit at a time and before you know it it's a working model. The AK Mods SC Class A 15W Amplifier is certainly an easier build than the HA/Pre and I'm sure Will's new boards will be the bees knees and a doddle to stuff. Sure I've had quite a few mishaps in my build of the 15Watt but they were all of my own making, fortunately Shaun went before me and when I needed his help he came up trumps. Of course Alex is always on hand as you know. Regards, Alan

Well Alex here are a couple of pics of the RE-SINK'ED 15Watt case, I'm a bit knackered as it took a couple of days to cut all the bits drill far too many holes and set all those bloody pop rivets. I've also improved the airflow through the case (more bloody holes). However it's a done deal now and I'm quietly confident that I'll achieve full bias easily with the "Tank II". I think I was overly optimistic before with the skimpy u channel one lives and learns.

Hi Alan. I look forward to seeing your reports when the bias is turned up, and the front end re-balanced/checked when cased up and at normal operating temperature. If you feed thin leads through one of the ventilation holes and use I.C. clips you should be able to do that. Kind Regards Alex

Running now most of today what a beautiful sound . What to do now??? I know................................................................................... sit back with a few good local beers and let that great AK sound surround me. I always worry along with you guys until it does what you hoped for. You have made my day ! Kind Regards Alex P.S. I suspect that Frans gets the same good feeling when one of his creations comes to life , and the builder gets a lot of pleasure from it.

Well I had a go at doubling the depth of my Tank's heat sink and got that finished today, air temp inside case has dropped to 34 deg C with a room temp of 20 deg C the whole setup is now in place from whence it is wafting sweet sounds at me. Here's a pic taken from my favourite chair I've just to decide what fronts-piece to go for, for the 15 Watt and it's a finished project..............with thanks to "the Old Master" of course. So I'm having a topping out ceremony with a nice bottle of "Ossian". Regards to all. Alan

HI Miguel, thanks, there's no doubting that since I found RG my audio experience has climbed to a much higher level. With Will's PK doing it's magic...what value for money that one is.... and Alex's positively brilliant modd'ed amplifiers my old TL's from the late seventies just sound out of this world in the best possible way. Regards, Alan

Looking good Alan! I reckon a similar wood-framed front to compliment your AK Class HA/Pre would look this business.
In other news, after messing about trying to get files off my old hard drives (which caused a certain amount of flexure of a certain part of my body), I've been able to get hold of the eagle files for the class A power amp. This means I can now finalise the circuit and the pcb's can be ordered!
Good grief - only half a year late!

Hi Will, Terrific to hear you've been able to rescue the AK-Class A amp PCB artwork ..... there is quite some amp envy building up here with Shaun and now Alan spruiking what listening enjoyment it brings....... And Alan, Well done with getting the amp sounding sweat and running cool with that terrific DIY casework... On the pic showing your speakers again, if by chance you're not sure where they originated, I've remembered their name. Pro9-TL Domestic Monitors... Found some build details on them online too... www.tech-diy.com/Loudspeakers/Pro9TL/pro9.htmTerrific sounding speakers from my memories of mates who built or owned them. cheers.. jeffc

Hi Will, better late than never I'm sure the boys will be delighted to hear your news. With regard to the amp front I'm still looking for the right bit of wood and then I'll bring both Pre and Power to the same end............. ie. identical except no knobs on the power. That of course means a new front for the Ha/Pre also. Jeff that's great sleuth work on the speakers, many thanks. My TL's certainly look like the PRO9TL and I've a smidgen of an inkling that it probably was Practical HiFi and Audio that I saw the design in and built from. I did buy the Kefs and other bits from Wilmslow Audio. One diff is with the front top port this shows a foam insert in the port which I've not used, leaving the port open but covered with the front grill baffle. Not sure if this makes much diff but I may make up the inserts and see what it sounds like with them in place. I must say though that I'm over the moon with what I'm hearing. Just now I'm listening to some Vinyl via the phono preamps I built for the Ha/Pre another of Alex's balanced circuits. Still think good vinyl sounds great. ;D Regards, Alan

Afternoon.
Anybody want to buy some amplifier and psu pcbs?
I'm happy that the layouts are done now, so I'd like a show of hands to see who is still interested in pcbs. I'll use Shaun's last posted list as a starter, but if everyone can confirm the exact amount of amplifier pcbs and psu pcbs that you want, it'd be a big help.
Unfortunately, Shaun has his hands full at the moment, so the kits will be on a back-burner, as will the ls device GB. What we can do though, is get the pcb's on the way.
If anyone would like to do the ls device GB, i can help with the details as it's the money collection and posting out that's the time consumer.
On the number of PCB's you'll need, I'll repost this from earlier in the thread..
The PSU PCB that I'm doing will cope with doing 3A, if you use LT10xx regs, so no worries there. It will also work with LM3xx regs, allowing for use up to 1.5A. This should give the following options:
1 PSU pcb with LT regs running two amp pcbs set at normal 1A bias (15W output) 2 PSU pcb with LM regs running two amp pcbs set at normal 1A bias (15W output) - only do this if you believe in the dual mono fairy 2 PSU pcb with LT regs running two amp pcbs set at normal 1A bias (15W output), giving lots of spare current capability for the future, and less stress on the regs. 2 PSU pcb with LT regs running two amp pcbs set at a higher bias (?W output), allowing Chris to entertain people in the next valley over with his music choice
I was mindful that not everyone will want to go dual mono, use the more expensive LT regs, or they may want to try for higher class A output levels, so thought along the above lines. I think the LT regs are also available in 5A to220 cases, if anybody fancied that?
Myself, I like the idea of the LT reg having an easy time running the normal 1A bias, in dual mono, so will head down that route.
PLUS one amp board per channel (so that'll be two then!)
Anyhow here's the list
for the LS device GB so far i have
Will 2x LS352 and 2X LS313 Phil 2x LS352 and 2X LS313 Me 2x LS352 and 2X LS313 Syd 2x LS352 and 2X LS313 Alan 4X LS352 and 4X LS313 Alex 2X LS352 and 2X LS313 Mark 2X LS352 and 2X LS313 (cyteen) Jeff 2X LS352 and 2X LS313 Jon C 2X LS352 and 2X LS313 Geoff 4XLS352 and 4XLS313
PCB's
Chris - CONFIRMED - 4 Amplifier boards and 4 PSU boards Syd - CONFIRMED - 2 Amplifier boards and 2 PSU boards Phil - CONFIRMED - 2 Amplifier boards and 2 PSU boards Will - CONFIRMED - 4 Amplifier boards and 4 PSU boards Mark (cyteen) - CONFIRMED - 2 Amplifier boards and 2 PSU boards Jon C - CONFIRMED - 2 Amplifier boards Shaun Geoff x 2 sets - CONFIRMED - 4 Amplifier boards and 4 PSU boards Alex - CONFIRMED - 2 Amplifier boards and 2 PSU boards Alan - CONFIRMED - 2 Amplifier boards Jeff - CONFIRMED - 2 Amplifier boards and 2 PSU boards
Chong 10 x PSU boards - CONFIRMED -16 PSU boards
I'll confirm prices once we have numbers, and then people can back out if they are too high.
I'll be out of the loop at the end of the month for a few weeks, so ideally I'd like to confirm qty's and payments before then, so that the pcb's can be on the way.
As part of Ian's lurker outreach programme - feel free to join in, the more the merrier!

Hi Will 2 x LS313, 2 x LS352 2 Amp PCBs 2 PSU PCBs also 2 x Previous Will and Jon JLH PCBs if any being done. Kind Regards Alex Hi Alex, The extra JLH's will be no problem - Anybody else want them? Please remember that the Will and Jon JLH's are single rail, so you would need two per amp pcb - one for -20V to front end, and the other for -20V to the front end.

Hi Will Jeff sent me 4 a while back, so I am O.K. for the amp rebuild. I wanted to use another couple elsewhere where I only needed a single +5V supply rail. Kind Regards Alex

Hi Will,
Confirmed:
Chong 2xLS352 and 2xLS313. Matched, right?
The PS PCBs increase to 16 though since they can do 5A. The final number will depend on final price of each PCB.
Thanks for your usual good effort for the diy community here and elsewhere.
Chong.
