Hi Alex, thanks for that one I'll do that right now as I must have the orig' article no mods mentioned. Report back back soon "Dad" Alan PS what a glorious day here. Hi Alan You could even leave the 2 series 22K as 44K is pretty close to 47K, and remove just the 47uF at the junction of the 2 x 22K If that doesn't fix the problem then you must have an error in that area. Regards Alex

Hi Alex, what an even better day here...............glorious outside and moving on inside............. as your suggestion to remove the 47uf at the junction of the 2X22K has done the trick. Just one more question.........how fast should the relay take to release on application of the 1.5v?.......mine takes about 1.5 sec. So Shaun get that 1.5v bat out and follow your "Dad's" instructions. Regards, Alan

Hi Alan Seems like you have a problem somewhere in that area. It should be immediate according to S.C. Are you getting the same on both channels ? Kind Regards Alex

HI Alex, I replaced one 22K with 47K and reaction time is now about half a second which you might say is almost instantaneous. I only had one 47K so used 56K for other side and have same result now on both channels and also on reversal of polarity hope you can give it the SandyK stamp of approval. Thanks Alex I'll have a btl of good beer in your honour, would have had one for you also but know that your "PRO" might not stand it so I'll just have it for myself and pissalotmore Regards Alan

Hi Alan haaaaaaaaaa too late I've already tested the speaker pro board out thoroughly errr on my speakers but as i say it saved my a** so well worth the time and effort. I've had it up and running for a while now with no problems and super sound. I've been doing daily checks on the DC offset and it's ridiculously low. yours sounds OK to me but lets see what the boss has to say. good work now the main boards and you are there take care HFSM.

Hi Shaun, looking at first main board now , pulled the 337 first just got to put some legs on it to test so lets see what transpires. Both OK in mid 300's but I'll replace them anyway. 2SA1302 looks OK reading 143 2SC3281 pretty low reading of 42 Alan

Alex posted some key measurements a few pages back so use them as a guide. take care

Hi Alex, what do I think of the AK Mods' SC Class A 15W Amplifier now that my build is up and running ......Oh! Yes!...... ......Oh! Yes! Sooooooogoooooood....................Sooooooogoooooood SandyK Yes Shaun's so right you won't want another amp when you get this one pumping out the AK high-res files. Once I have it run in and cased and playing through the venerable TL's I'll be able to give an in depth on it. Surprisingly I had no idea these small Denon cast off speakers could sound so good.......................................just goes to show what a great amp the AK Mods' SC Class A 15 Watt Amplifier is especially in combo with the AK Mods' SC HA/pre Pics will follow when I get it all ship shape and AK fashion. I have to give a big thank you to Shaun for pushing me along especially when things were getting a bit hairy for this build was a real "Comedy Of Errors" with numerous senior moment episodes.................I might give a run down on that aspect of my build later. So thanks Alex :oThanks Shaun :oand thanks to "The Grotto" a great place to hang out. Regards to all, Alan

Hi Alan I look forward to seeing your photos. BTW, did you find that doing the front end balance adjustment resulted in worthwhile SQ improvements ? According to the "experts" that is also supposed to be impossible. Kind Regards Alex

Hi Alex, really can't give any solid thoughts on SQ until I've lashed it up to the old TL's, at the moment I'm listening to Jazz House on BBC radio with just the module which I got working six hours back, mono fed into one stunt speaker, but that is so good I know I'll be back raving as soon as it's fully up and running. Yes Shaun I'll do that with the front end balance and report back, but from past experience with the LTP balance on the SandyK HA/Pre I know that's a foregone conclusion despite what the "experts" might like to propound...........there's an old adage............... "first you try and then you buy"...........then there's....................... "don't knock what you ain't tried. Alan

Hi Alan As you just posted confirmation of the same adjustment's effect on the HA/Preamp, don't upset your present adjustment with this one . It will likely need a further small adjustment after you case it all up. Kind Regards Alex

Hi Alan
great work on the total Diy build and nice use of clip leads which I've also found to be most useful in saving all of the soldering un soldering soldering lark.

Hi Chris, heat sinks are temporary till I get the case built as the sides will be formed by the heat sinks. This amp don't seem to heat up much it's a pretty cool all-round performer and I'm thinking that the heatsinking is OTT so I may down size them a little, here are a few pics of the driver sinks and C/L section SA/SC devices.

Hi Shaun, reporting in on how it sounds after a days play with the "OLD TL'S" Well I had it hooked up to the small expendables and it was pretty good............well enough of that I thought so changed over to my main speakers......the ones MGLW expelled from the main living area many moons ago. The Speaker Pro unit delays for about four seconds on switch on and instant off so that department seems to be covered....DC offset still hovers around the zero mark. This amp is certainly streets ahead of the 405 which Alex of course new was the weak link in my set-up. Hi-res WAVE Files by youknowwho Foobar 2000....Will's great wee PK DAC ......THe SandyK HA/PRE..... and now THE SANDYK 15 Watt PA .................................. hey! let's not forget Alan's KEF based TL's of yesteryear. Wide sound stage that takes you right into the heart of well recorded instrumental pieces, it's as if you were sitting right in there with them. Great clean deep base that massages right through you. I keep turning round thinking my wife is in the room asking me a question only to realise that it's all in the recording, I'm now hearing stuff that was hidden under the veil that certainly don't come with this great sounding amp. Benji B on Radio 1 did a Sci-fi Special last week with one day left to listen............there are tracks on that show which really highlight how good this amp is. Anyone swithering about building it, get started on buying in the components now and Will's up and coming new board will have you an amp you will be proud of. Alan

Hi Alan Great work ! Just remember though, that this amplifier dissipates around 100W of heat, so it can get quite warm on a warmer summer's day. Kind Regards Alex

Alan Hi Alan it's great to hear that you are enjoying it as much as i am. mine gets pretty much daily use it's all good from top to bottom and yes the bass goes very deeep but it's also fast and tuneful which is really nice. your Quad 405 is a nice sounding amp and no slouch in the bass department but Alex's 15W is very special indeed. so just one question do you think that 15W will be enough for you? i know it's plenty enough for me and never sounds anything other than totally composed even when playing very loud.(when the wife's out) oh be warned it will improve with age. mine took a few weeks for the components to settle. just a thought on the heat sinks the amp will run hotter if you plan to box it in and put a lid on it. so better to be cautious about making them too small. Alex don't worry about warm weather it's Scotland we're talking about here. take care

Hi Shaun, I do like it loud but even when MGLW comes up to say turn that thumping bass down.................and I do the lower level is just as appealing.......................mmmmmm prefer it loud, had it loud today and my three year.....no two and a half year old grandson came up to say, grannie said turn it down, came in and never batted an eye normally he'd not come near loud noise, so that was a bonus for he stayed with me till grannie came up to read the riot act. 15 Watt is way plenty I doubt I'd want it any louder than what I had today's volume control at, only a third way up. I look forward to it settling in quite surprised though that it's so well behaved with just a few hours play. As to heat sinks...........I still think I can reduce the fin's thickness (weight of metal).........the length is still going to be 320mm by 100mm per side. The LT10's are each running barely warm on a 120mm X 25mm X 25mm bit of angle so both PSU and OPs will be on the side wall main sinks. At the moment the left module is running at room temp on 140mm length by 100mm finned whilst the right module on a bit of 1.5mm plate the length of the module is barely warm. No I won't make them too small but do think it will run not much above room temp when finished. All in ........a great AMP, thanks Alex. Regards, Alan
