I have a few Little Pinkies and they are superb. Mike does one version which is housed in a plastic casing and an se type which is absolutely top notch.
It has a metal casing and is a tough 'un. It runs totally silent and I much prefer it to the plastic cased one actually.
Having a good power supply ensures that you're getting a good dynamic range.

Hi Old Son (colloquial greeting in my part of the world ), I'm no audiophile with educated ears but I can perceive differences OK and I am a good customer of Sean, the guy who is custom.hifi. cables. I have bought PSUs from him as well as speaker cable and he's done me some custom hifi building for me - my next two projects are already in the pipeline. I have no connection with Sean whatsoever, other than as a long standing and very satisfied customer. He's a very nice and helpful guy and his handiwork is excellent IMHO. Their is a pic of the inside of my CH Amp that Sean built for me on that thread on this forum. I don't think that you'll be disappointed in any way with anything Sean does for you. I am not in any position to compare Sean's PSUs with the above mentioned Mike's Little Pinkies, which also have a very well justified reputation, so I cannot offer any opinion on that aspect. Hope this helps. Dave.

The old 10-XD PSU is just a transformer in a box, there is an old guide on how to make one: www.rock-grotto.co.uk/x-psu.htmThe part numbers and prices are probably long out of date, however if it were built in an ABS box the parts should cost about £20 + post: Transformer(£12-16), box( £4-8), fused IEC inlet (£1), fuse( pennies), power switch( 50p-£1), PSU to amp wire( pennies) and the adapter( pennies-50p). You might want some heatshrink and a terminal block for inside the box. Clearly building anything at the mains end requires care, its best for a first timer to have some help/supervision.

Ian i am leaning towards the pinkie, i must admit, but the cheaper version will do for me. i trust they are technically identical? i dont even know if this addition (the x-10d) will make an improvement to my system, yet. so spending as much again on a psu is sticking in my throat a tad!! i guess i can sell them on though, if needs be. am also considering a psu upgrade for my solo. or even a new amp?!?! will i ever be satisfied? ?

Dave thanks for the reply. will probably go for the pinkie. i reckon if the addition of the x-10/pinkie, does not improve my overall SQ i can probably sell them easily on here. cheers

If you are going the route of getting Little Pinkie you should consider modifying the X10-D using Mike's kit. I have both and I love the sound.
