Hi all experts,
As in subject title. Of course, the easiest way. Old DOS method not as user friendly. I don't mean transfering the whole music files to Excel. Just the names.
Thanks all.

You could do with FSO, file system object: www.w3schools.com/asp/asp_ref_filesystem.aspI've done similar things for discovering images within a directory and writing their names to a database table for web sites. The eaxmple is for use with ASP, as that's what I know and use, but I'm sure you can do similar things with other scripting languages, PHP, etc. You can connect to an Excel file using OLEDB and read/write to and from it in a similar fashion as a database table. I don't know of a 5 minute way of doing it without programming.

Install Linux, learn bash and ls and | and dump in CSV. Works extremely well and fast and it's very user friendly, once you know how And probably foobar will also have some weird way of doing this, out of the box or with a plugin.

Can anyone confirm or refute: - There are programs called Collectorz (or similar), one of which is for cataloging your music collection - IIRC it is possible then to file that information in .csv (excel) format. Am I right or just deluded (again ). Dave.

A programme called CATraxx claims to be able to do this, amoungst a wealth of other features. I assume you meant list/batch copying, could be a tad tedious doing so via rename/copy to notepad/copy to excel ;D I have been told that; WMP/winamp/mediamonkey can all do it via creating a HTML file. iTunes can send direct to xml or txt. I looked into this myself a while ago, hence the above but had so little on file back then I forgot all about it. EDIT; after my little joke about the notepad method above, I thought, hang on, it must be possible to do lists of files this way too. It would seem the answer is yes..... support.microsoft.com/kb/321379

Hi guys,
Have the csv file for song names. How do I open it properly? Excel have all sorts or commas and other spacing marks when used. Use Free Opener software from MS recomendations but still the same problem.
Must it be only itunes or MS Media Player can open it in the correct format? How?
Thanks.

Chong,
This is from theory as I have never actually done it but;
Once you have created your csv or text/notepad file close it. You do not copy/paste from or open it using Excel at this point.
Using Excel 2007,
Open a new worksheet, select the "Data" tab, then the "From text" tab. Select your csv file to import the data. This will take you into a three step import wizard that allows you specify the final appearance of the imported data.
Done!

FWIW, my Excel (2007) opens csv files in excel by doubleclicking.

FWIW, my Excel (2007) opens csv files in excel by doubleclicking. It opened alright but like I had said lots of commas, etc. So not the correct format. I think Chris got something there. At present I'm using a computer with no Excel client. So maybe have to try what Chris had written at home.

Chong,
I put my theory to test and it works perfectly for me.
I also tried pc1s gommers suggestion which I too could not get to work, maybe pc1 gommer knows something we don't? A setting somewhere that needs changing to allow this method?.....

What did he write? Thanks.

Chong, Sorry not pc1, it was gommer! He suggested the "double click" method which I think you have already tried and were getting spurious characters? Waiting for gommer to read this and clarify Chris (prev. post corrected)
