Sorry, folks. Not in the traditional computer LAN mentality but from an AV perspective. So the thread is rightly here. Any idea when my new TV is connected to the wireless router for internet, can the TV LAN connection be used as a LAN connection for my Sony Bluray player? Being an older model, the bluray player doesn't have WIFI connection. I wanted the player to be able to access BD Live. So will my bluray player have internet access thru the TV if I just connect the LAN cable from the TV to the player LAN connection? Reminder, I have WIFI connection from wireless router to TV. Thanks.

For that to work the TV would neeed to be capable of IP routing which most probably won't be.

What do you think of the LAN card out of a PC to the same TV? Yes, PC connected thru WIFI to wireless router. It seems the only way is to buy the bloody Sony dongle to connect wirelessly to WIFI router or a service provider wireless set top box, which is basically a low end PC, and connect the STB LAN out to the TV LAN. Yes, STB connected wirelessly to WIFI router. What say you?

You can indeed configure a PC to act as a router bewteen two NICs. If it is close yo the Sony you can connect the Sony via cable to the PC and from there to the Wifi router, though the easiest and most convinient way to get BD Live (what for? is mostly crap anyway) will be getting the dongle.

Ah, good! Actually to have internet connection is not only for BD Live but mainly for firmware update. Must try to avoid buying the Sony dongle as it's not cheap given the price of the Sony bluray player. Might as well buy the OPPO 95 3D player with everything in already. How do I configure the PC as a router based on Win 7 64 bits Home and Professional Edition?

I don't have any "Home" version, only Professional but they should be exactly the same. Is not difficult but I'll have to write a little tutorial with some pics which takes time, if you are ineterested I'll write it tomorrow if I find some free time. The Oppo is a better idea, you'll kill many birds with one shot though it'll be somewhat more expensive than the Sony dongle.

Hi Chong,
Another possibility would be to make a wifi to lan bridge. This can, for example, be done by reflashing an old FON box. This thing only consumes about 5W and is as small as a sigarette box.
Not an easy task to reflash though, but once this is done you can forget it, it will just sit there and work.
Cheers, Marc

On behalf of everyone interested, I thank-you from Singapore. I'm very sure there are and on the side line. The Oppo is a better idea, you'll kill many birds with one shot though it'll be somewhat more expensive than the Sony dongle. Actually, this is one of the options to be considered seriously between brands. Fyi. Will pull the trigger at the right time when selected.

Hi Marc, Care to share more what this FON box is all about. Every option when doable can be considered. I'm sure there are always room for interesting solution even when not selected. Your solution did step on my interest toes.

OK, brace your seat belts, here we go: The FON concept: corp.fon.com/en/The old FON freebies, now treasured items because small and hackable: on ebayAnd finaly: hacking the Fonera: stefans.datenbruch.de/lafonera/You basically get a DD-WRT wireless router with a single LAN port, that is small and uses very little power. Cheers, Marc
