Avoid the Ipod 'Brick'

When Ipods and computer play up, it can be spectacular leaving you frustrated and wanting to throw the Ipod out the window.
I had a big problem and thought it was the end of the Touch but I've found a curious 'fix'. This took me hours but once you know, it's just a case of sit and watch.
PROBLEM: Itunes decided that it was time to update the IOS so I did as I was told. It crashed and came up with error 1604. The Touch refused to boot up again and would do nothing. The Touch wasn't even recognised by either Itunes or the computer. I couldn't rerun the update or play the Touch. In effect, it was a brick.
CURE:
a) Go to 'Control Panel;, then 'administrative tools'. Click 'Services'. Look for 'Apple Mobile Device' - click once on it and the on the left, click 'Stop' the service and then click 'Start'.
Now start Itunes and then connect the Ipod. Itunes will report that an Ipod is in the middle of an update so tell it to continue and it will start.
Here's the weird bit - it will get to the point where it crashed previously and crash again. (This is what you should have done then)
Leave the Ipod attached and quit ITunes. Boot Itunes up again and it will then (again) try to update. Get it to update again and this time (hopefully) it will finish the job and reinstall the language and music files again.
The main thing is to not disconnect the Ipod since it then behaves like a brick and won't do anything.
I have no idea why this happens but it did restore a bricked Ipod exactly as it was before everything went wrong big time.
This fix isn't reported in Apple 'help' files but it seems to get past the 'not recognised' part which is rather worrying.
