Someone has let the air out of my pads and they've been washed so many times that they're becoming bald.
Does anyone know of a supplier for pads at a reasonable price?
I'm getting £48 - £60 on Aunty Google.

E 45.- at Thomann.de
this is without shipping costs, so if you order some parts for your music things with it... above E 100 there are NO shipping costs, below that E 8.- (to the Neverlands, UK is 10 I thought)

Thomann is most likely one of the cheapest sellers of the HD650 pads. I've ordered a pair recently.
Still a rip-off compared to Beyer and AKG pads.
I don't understand why Sennheiser keeps the prices so high. It can't be "better quality" than the other manufacturers. Beyer and AKG pads have at least an equal quality (if not better).
It's similar with the headphones. While AKG and Beyer drop the prices of their models significantly during the lifespan, Senn keep the prices on a higher level. I've noticed this mainly with the HD600/650's. Some dealers in Switzerland have raised the price of both recently. This now as the Euro is in free fall. I guess those dealers are ripping off Swiss customers.

TBH Christian, I'm thinking about leaving it. For that price, I could get a portable headphone!!
The HD650 is still not quite right for me in the top end. I love the bass and bass attack but strings sound poor on them imo. The Senns work really well on pop/rock/electric stuff but not orchestral in spite of what is read about them being so good for orchestral.
There's not enough top for a good string tone for me. I much prefer the K601 for classical.
Ideal for me is between the HD650 bass and the K601 treble.

Ian I've bought the pads (and a lot of other stuff) only from Thomann because Swiss Francs are very strong compared to the Euro. Still a lot money for pads though. Perhaps you should have a look on the DT990 Pro's or DT990 Edition's. My DT990 Pro's (250 Ohm) are somewhat similar to the HD650's, but the sound signature of the DT990's is often more appropriate. They have exaggerated bass/treble and are slightly lacking in the midrange (I don't see it as a problem, it's not bad). The bass and treble are really better than that of the HD650's. The treble is almost as soft as that of the HD650's, I don't have a problem with the treble when listening for very long times. The bass seems fuller and is better defined. The DT990's are a half open design (in contrast to the fully open DT880's and the closed-back DT770's).

Thanks Frans. I may take up knitting and make my own!! Ian Since you do not seem to truly like the Senn sell them and use the money for a new headphone. I personally prefer the HD600 or the HD580 over the HD650.

Last night, following the great 'pad' search, I listened on HD650 and then on K601. I much prefer the 601 openness at the top but I also love the Senn bass. (imo one of its strong points) The 650 is also a tad more refined than the 600 though. Maybe today, I'll do a 600 K601 shoot out!!!! (Before the HD600 goes out of production) Ian

Ideal for me is between the HD650 bass and the K601 treble. Seriously, have a look on the DT990's. I'm almost sure, you'd like them. Of course, it's always a matter of taste. I particularly like the DT990's because almost everything sounds good with them. The DT990 Pro's are also comparatively cheap (much cheaper than the HD600/HD650's). IMO they are almost as forgiving as the Senn's, but they sound more open at the top and the bass is better defined. Both the 300 Ohm Senn's and the 250 Ohm Beyer's are IMO a nearly perfect match with the Neco MOSFET/BOSSFET amps. The Neco portable sounds also good with them. The low-output impedance of the Neco's (about 2-3 Ohms) seems to be very beneficial with those 'phones. I can't comment on the K601 though. I have decided a few weeks ago that I don't buy more AKG 'phones. Most of them are very picky about right amping and it seems that they are not exactly what I'm really searching for.

Since improving my headphone amps... err I mean since Mike improved them... and having a Panda too, I find I can't listen to the HD650's anymore. They just do too much wrong stuff to the sound with their skewered response. My HD600's were unlistenable before improving things but now they are very good indeed.

Perhaps only a question of the right amp for a specific 'phone.
HD650's can sound great with the right amp. As always it's also about taste (of course).
If an amp is upgraded, it's sounds somewhat different thereafter.
I'd go for an AD8160 opamp equipped Neco MOSFET/BOSSFET for the HD650's. It's a perfect match.
The pads (to go back on track...) make also a big difference. I've replaced the pads of my HD580's recently with the rather new pads of my HD650's (those have got brand new pads). Especially the HD580's sound much better (again). The old pads have been worn out.
