I read a review of this recently - the guy said that it was probably the best DAP he'd ever heard, but not without a few caveats. Pros were incredible build quality and great sound, cons were a less than good UI and a small screen with limited buttons. It still got a pretty good recommendation, I think.

There was another very similar device a couple of years ago that had a few issues. I went through a few revisions which did not fix all the problems. I will try to find the name and pictures to post here later.

Hmmm!! thanks Chris, Hadn`t read that review, pointed out a few issues ( software with Chinese products,!! well that`s a surprise ) will hold fire for the time being, i have just emailed advancedmp3players for some more info on this player, also i don`t like "free!!!!" complementary initial order gifts with my purchases, especially if i do not require them, cash reductions sound far better to me, if you get my drift!!. Thank you Chris, shame that, it ticks all the right boxes for me and certainly looks the business, but perhaps its only the build quality and not the components contained within, that are impressive. My quest continues for the time being. Mick.

Out of curiosity I was havin' a wee gander at what's on offer these days but at the more budget end. I will point out at this juncture that I am totally anti-iPod, mainly because of it's dependancey on it's homegrown software, which I loath! Have you seen this. It has some decent reviews and is quite dinky.

In that case, you should check out Rockbox. Reflash any iPod generation (I think) and bye bye iTunes.

I was just trying to download Rockbox for Windows and my firewall/anti-virus prog went nuts, called it "high risk Malware" and quaratined it!
Is this prog definitely OK? ie should I override my fw/av prog?

Rockbox is definately OK. It's open source, you did get it from the Rockbox site, did you? If yes, then it must be a false positive.

Yes and Ok, thanks. Also, does it only work with the players listed in the "manuals" section. The kids have Nano 4th gens and the RB list only goes to G2? EDIT According to various forums there is no Rockbox for iPod Nano 4th gen. There! I told you I hated these bastard things Claus, it's the pigging "sync" feature I hate the most, I want to drag/drop remove/move and copy from one unit to another at will, like nearly every other machine allows you too! Apple, schmapple, pah!

Hi Chris,
Here is the reply i received from advancedmp3players, concerning the issues expressed in the review of the Hisoundaudio Studio you posted:-
Hi, Thank you for your message. All of our team have tested the Hi-Sound Studio-V MP3 player, and were very impressed with the sound quality it produced. We didn't encounter any issues with the memory expansion slot, and certainly didn't find any issue with the headphones output. As the reviewer mentioned, any such issues were probably caused by him opening up the player, which also would void the warranty.
Regarding the player crashing whilst reading cards, this is not something we experienced, however it should be noted that we did not have a 16gb card available to test this with. Moreover, there is a strong possibility that this could be down to a compatibility issues, or perhaps an error with the files used. As the reviewer neither mentions the type of card used, nor the file formats or sizes etc, it is very difficult to say.
As the review was written over a year ago, there is a strong possibility that the manufacturer has upgraded the firmware before releasing the model into Britain. It should be noted that they are also due to release several other firmware updates (to allow the user to tweak the sound output to their own personal tastes) in the near future, and so should there be any bugs that the AMP3 Team did not encounter, the manufacturer will more likely than not address these through firmware updates.
Please always bear in mind that we do exercise a '7 day unwanted item policy', whereby if you're not entirely satisfied with your purchase we're more than happy to offer an exchange or a refund, so long as you can kindly notify us within seven days of receiving the item.
I hope this is of help to you. Should you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us as we are always more than happy to help.
I think i will wait until it is tested and proven by the UK market before i part with the cash, but i certainly have not discounted it at the moment.
Mick.

Mick, Yes, I think I would hold off too. I would have thought a generally negative review like the one I linked to would have attracted an exacting response. The "not sure, don't think so, can't say" reply you quoted does not exactly fill one with confidence Chris

Didn't know you were talking about Nano's. Status (if that name is appropriate in this case) of the 4th gen Nano can be found here: www.rockbox.org/wiki/IpodNano4GPortSo indeed, that's a nono nogo. You poor guy, you have my sympathies.
