When i bought my Musical fidelity X10-D together with M/Fs X-PSU, i thought that the sound improvement it made to my system was only marginal, so much so that i really began to think that all the press coverage that i had read about these units were over hyped to say the least.
After surfing the net one day back in the spring of 2008, i stumbled upon "Rock Grotto" and it did not take me long to establish the fact that here was a dedicated site ran by a man who knew his onions regarding the customisation of such units.
I took the plunge and sent my X10-D to Mike who lives at the very tip of Scotland for the full upgrade kit to be installed together with a new quad RCA socket, new valves and a purple LED light to boot and waited in excitement for it's return.
Within a week it arrived back to me all suited and booted and ready for action. I left it on for a good 200 hrs for all the caps ect to burn in and form before evaluating the results and boy was there a difference, the whole sound stage had notably improved by quite a dramatic margin and i was well happy with the new improved sonic results.
A few years later (last month in fact) i came across some gold plated ceramic valve bases that would fit the X10-D and i asked Mike if he would fit them in for me, "no problem" he said, so off the PCB went for another ride up to Scotland.
Not only did Mike fit in the bases for me but he also took the opportunity to fit in two new 4.7uF metallised polyester caps and replaced them with much better quality 4.7uF polypropylene types that he had recently come across and he further advised me to fit a pair of "kick ass" 6N23P-EB (chrome pins) Russian military valves to fully compliment this second revamp, these valves (and i am sure that Mike will agree with me) are the ultimate valves known to man regarding the X10-D unit! ......... So i ended up with 3 more major upgrades!
All i can say now is that this X10-D of mine is producing such quality sonic ambiance by the bucket load, it is making every CD sound like the voice coils of god! .... It really is that good.
Now i know the true meaning of the "Missing Link"
If it was not for Mike's dedication and no nonsense approach to what appears to be his own personal mission to find true "audio nevana" by hunting down relentlessly for all these magic components, owners of M/F "X" components and the likes would be seriously deprived.
A thousand thank you's Mike.
