Greetings. New user, long time fan I'm looking for suggestions for tube upgrades for my cylinder X10d. Purchased second hand, and not sure the brand of tubes in them as they appear to have no label on the valves. I just purchased a pair of JJ E88cc - not gold pins. Left it on for about a week to burn in. However, I didn't like they way they sounded compare to the stock tubes(unmarked tubes). Any suggestions would be appreciated for valves. I'd like to keep it under a $100 a pair if possible. I am considering 6H23n-EB, any thought on these? Thanks in advance.

Hi alfred Mike pink floyd and a couple of other members will be your best bet. I dont have a x10d, but i think the jan phillips or the russian valves will be ideal. paddy

My favourites are the Jan Phillips which have a good, balanced sound that's nicely rounded. Depending on your tastes the 6n23 is harder hitting. To me, it sounds more extended with a harder hitting bass.
Mike has some classic Rusiians up there and he'll also match them for you. Well worth it IMO.

Hi Alfred,
The stock valves (tubes) are 6DJ8 / ECC88.... most of them were fitted with Philips 6DJ8. The 6922 is a nicer sounding valve (E88CC) and I would strongly recommend these with the X-10D.
I keep loads of these in stock (all brand new / boxed) and will be happy to match a pair for you.
All the best,
Mike.

Wow thanks guy for the great suggestions.
What do Jan 6992 price for a pair?
Also, what do you guys think of NOS Phillips PCC88 compared to the recommended Jan 6992?
I should note that I am happy with the sound of the current stock tubes in the X10D, but the idea of better tubes gives me the impression that I could be happier w the upgrade. Or, I may just be itching just to tweak with my system....

How much time should I allow tubes to burn in before they become "musical"?
Will my JJ E88CCs sound better over time or if I don't like them now I will never enjoy them?

The JJ's are current production "tubes" and not at all bad in the sonic dept..... To be 100% honest I have never left them in long enough to give them the benefit of the doubt regarding "burn in".... they just sound too mushy to my ears..... Maybe you can be the first person to do an in depth report on the JJ from first second to nine hundreth hour? Nah, they are not the tightest fannies on the block... the JAN 6922 are a much more exciting ride

I heard about these tubes: Telefunken ECC85. How do they compare to the Jan 6922?

How much time should I allow tubes to burn in before they become "musical"? Will my JJ E88CCs sound better over time or if I don't like them now I will never enjoy them? For the Xcan V3 I got both the 6H23P and 6H23N-EB tubes. The 6H23P took a while to run in. The 6H23N-EB took 50% longer to run in to the point that they lost any glare and tightened up but now they have a more 'filled-in' sound over the 6H23Ps. By means of running-in, I left the amp turned on 100 hours and have played them around 30 hours. The 6H23n-EBs took longer to feel comfortable with but overall do sound better, though it remains a subtle difference. No idea at what point they're considered as formed as they're gonna get. I have Philips 6922's that were stock, but they're on their way out I guess and a bit 'shouty'. Of concern was that they ran very warm.

I too feel the JJs sound "mushy" . They do sound better now after they've been on for a week, but still not too happy with them.
Can I assume that if a tube sounds great in the X-Cans, that they will perform just as well in the X10d?

Usually I would advice against assuming anything. However in the case of the X-Cans, the X-Can V2 and the X-10D it would be a good assumption. Of course a lot will depend on the op-amps used in the X-Cans as well as the quality of your power supply. Good luck.

I have had more "X-Ponents" in my hands than you have had hot dinners..... If you order a pair of "tubes" from me they will be 100% brand new and matched.... I wouldn't sell you a pair if I didn't think they were the best for your particular device As Miguel says.... "never assume anything" but be assured that I won't sell you a lemon Mike.

ok you got my attention I get so consumed when I get my mind on something. You saved me alot of time and $$ for that matter. I will go with the Jan's. Perhaps the extra saving can go into a PSU for significant performance?

The Jameco wallwart provides 3 times the amperage of the stock wallwart and should be an improvement. At such a low price ... just DEW IT!

Taking high VA rating / no load voltage / voltage drop under load into consideration maybe NOT so correct. A bit of "derating" may be apt for the situation...... Whoops, time for me to go back into the cupboard

Proper valve burnin?
I have my x10d (with my new Jan valves ) installed between my Nad M15 Pre/Proc and my Mac amp. Can I just run my source CD player ( continuously) through my Nad M15, to my X10d to properly break-in my tubes without having my amp on. My logic behind this, is the signal is still going through the X10d which should pass a signal to the new tubes which allows the breaking in of the new valves even it the out put is not being fed and amplified by the Amp.
Or, does my Mac amp need to be on for input and output of the x10d to allow proper signal flow for the x10D valve burn in??
