Sorry about typos. The letters on my Kindle are about two millimetres high. I can barely read it without expanding, which slows everything down. I can't correct them later o this.

Hi Mike,
If you have time, great. Many thanks. You know, I feel like the Panda is in hospital. I'll sort out paypal postage and bits as soon as I return to UK. A guy lent me a portable Sennheiser headphone today. Looks dirt cheap and plastic but sound isn't too shabby on Neco. It's an HD218. Looking at it, I'd say it was worth about £30. It has a pad that contains memory foam a bit like the Bose on ear. However, this one isn't fat and bloated like the Bose. It sounds amazingly open for a semi closed design. I don't know if it's available in UK,but it's a pleasant listen.
Mike, only fit the socket if you have time. Hope you're starting to feel more normal now what with teeth and cold. Does this mean I am obliged to agree with your next statement! ;-)
This version could be called the Panda Pod!
Hope you're well Mike.

Does this mean I am obliged to agree with your next statement! ;-) This version could be called the Panda Pod! Hope you're well Mike. Hi Ian, 5 minutes work! There are already a couple of spare holes on the rear so just a case of fitting the socket and wiring it up to the inputs. Went for root canal today and the dentist was excellent! He put the needle in my gob and had it in there for ages... I was thinking "fekkin' hell... when's he going to stick it in?" He HAD stuck it in and I didn't feel so much as a jab.... excellent technique. The root canal lasted about 45 minutes with him going in with a wide range of drill bits, files and plenty of hydrogen peroxide.... the only thing I found a bit hard was keeping my mouth "wide open" for 45 minutes without being able to talk! The anaesthetic wore off a few hours ago and there is no discomfort AT ALL.... it's as if he hadn't gone in! Truly superb One of the best dentists (most competent) I have seen (and NHS too!) but he didn't say a WORD during the procedure.... I'm used to a bit of banter, this guy didn't even ask "are you feeling ok?" he just kept ploughing on for 45 minutes not saying a word. It was ok as Steve Wright in the afternoon was on the radio so I just listened to him chuntering on The "mobile" dental unit may be a bit basic but the dentist is far from basic.... a real pro.... the private outfit in town employed foreign dentists and they were absolute cowboys, it was all about "money" and bullshit.... the three of them in that practice wouldn't have made one good dentist between them... all show and no substance. I went there twice and, on the second occasion, threatened to throw the dentist out of the window! He refused to give me antibiotics for a gum infection and said "I can give you relief now and save the tooth, it will be £760" !! I said "listen mate, I didn't come down the Thames in a Banana boat... please prescribe me a course of antibiotics or I'll throw you out that window head first you f**kin' shyster!" He wrote me a prescription (the dental nurse smiled at me ) and that was the last time I went anywhere near that joint! A couple of months ago they were done by HMRC for tax evasion and they are no longer.... they cleared out of the premises pretty smartish! A local MP tried to save them.... I e-mailed them and told them they DESERVED to go out of business as they were a bunch of fekkin' amatuer, bullshitting, unethical highway robbers.... I was so happy to see those bAstards going out of business. Thing is, it's very difficult to attract Dentists up here.... it's not so much a "shortage" of dentists it's more a case of they want to practice in the big cities. The guy I see caters for the population of Thurso (8,000 people) and he only comes to town on a Monday! So, you can see how hard it is to find a dentist! Thing is, before I was banned from driving my car (for 4 years) I would drive down to my old dentist in Perth no problems at all.... A 10 hour round trip in the car...... without the car it would mean getting a train there and that takes a good 9 hours each way. Most of the people in town have cars and they are registered with Dentists in Inverness (120 miles away) I know a few guys here who even sail over to the Orkneys to see a Dentist and one guy who flys over to the Shetlands!!! Thing is, it's NOT "remote" in Thurso...... 8,000 people live there ffs! just seems that Dentists prefer the bright lights of the "city" for some obscure reason. "Doctors" are the opposite, there are Doctors EVERYWHERE up here.... got a problem? call the Doctor and you are seen the same day and, usually, within two hours! Need to see a specialist? You are referred instantly and usually see a specialist within a WEEK!!!! That aspect of health care is second to none in the whole of the UK..... but dentists? they are a strange breed who avoid "real living" like the plague (or should that be like the "plaque" ) Another rare breed here is your "optician".... there is ONE in town and you have to wait about 14 months to see him (seriously).... again, if you have a car it's a simple case of booting it 120 miles to Inverness and walking into an optician of your choosing but, if you don't have transport you just have to use the local optician. All of this has taught me a VERY big lesson. A: don't drink and drive! B: The hardship that non car owners have to endure, the lack of local services, the lack of transport etc. I think I was "meant" to be caught in a 120MPH near death drunken police chase... if it wasn't for that dark moment in my life I would never have seen how quite a lot of people are suffering due to lack of essential services. I would NEVER have instigated a local "revolt" to improve our services and I would have probably STILL be driving past these poor buggers, standing waiting for a bus, at high speed oblivious of their plight.... This has taught me a big lesson. I have made many friends on the bus and am actively campaigning for "more" buses, I have over 800 signatures on a petition I created and will be handing this over to the local MP Lord John Thurso this weekend. I was always a very insular person but, being without a car, has forced me to use the bus and I have met a lot of very good people as a result.... I'm not sure I actually "want" to buy myself a car nect year when I get my license back. Seriously.... I am SO MUCH BETTER OFF! We are talking £5,000 per year better off! No petrol to buy, no insurance to buy, no tax, no running costs etc. etc. The 4 year ban will have (I have worked out) saved me £20,000 .... yep, twenty THOUSAND pounds (GBP).... in "keeping a car" costs..... Jesoooo, that's INSANE! A return bus trip into town costs £2.78...... it is subsidised hence "£2.78" return.... it is 15 miles into town so that's 30 miles for £2.78! You just CANNOT replicate that in a car if you take the running costs, upkeep, road taxes, insurance etc. into consideration.... £2.78 for 30 miles of "news, gossip, scenery, scandal etc." ? I would MISS it if I had a car again!.... the bus trip into town is an "event"! The bus driver (Andrew) always has a good crack and the rest of us just gossip like Hens while he's making a fool of himself in the driving seat Totally off topic from the Panda but I HAD to go into the dark before I could see the light. Mike.

Hi Mike,
I forgot about fhe back entrance on the casing on the Panda. (I'm going in Jim ;-)) Mike, you'll have to get an etcher and sign it. It's a work of art and you should have been a pop star, crashing at 120.
I read the thread concerning that in Saucerful a long time ago. The girl's appearance was really funny; especially wheb she took offence to Colt! The way you describe it is really graphic and I understood the spur of the minte thing when you went into a panic and shot off. I did that in Germany years ago and the police really didn't hve much of a sense of humour! (until they let me go - and it was all hushed up)
Also, I noticed some of the stuck up replies concerning that incident of yoursin. Like no one does aby wrong. However, you've turned it into something positive, which is a great thing to do instead of blaming the whole world for your woes. Lots of people could learn from that; especially those who try to use it as a weapon.
Do you also realise that there's enough material there for an album with the classic three parts _ life before - the even - after. All plastered with stories of a chat with imdividuals on the bus, including a song about the dickhead who told you what the best headphones are on the bus. Your own comcept album!
Trouble is, if I wrote it, you, recognise it! You could do me then and become rich, move to the Orknies and live happily ever after. ;-)
I'm glad the teeth are sorted. Pure misery.
Sorry about any typos. This took forever!

What is it about the internet that brings outthe shite we've been reading this week? Very strange.

What is it about the internet that brings out the shite we've been reading this week? Very strange. It's the time of year.... nights are drawing in, Christmas adverts are starting to appear on the TV and it's getting colder outside.... people are getting pissed off man! So pissed off that they walk up to someone and say "I fukkin' hate you, you piece of shit".... yep, it's that time of year again He's got a great website, by the way.... jam packed with content www.thestottfamily.co.uk/

Had a bit of spare time today so made a start on Panda three I've decided to try some general purpose Panasonic TS-UP series power caps in this one (3300uF / 50v).... I've tried the ELNA and Nichicon "audio" caps in Panda one and two so want to hear what a bog standard general purpose cap sounds like. I'm cheating a little bit though as I will be triple bypassing them The stock kit comes with 100nF Wima film caps which bypass the 3300uF caps. This time around I am going to directly bypass the caps with 100nF EVOX polyprops (on the bottom of the board).... I am then going to fit 3UF WIMA film caps in the 100nF positions and bypass these (on the bottom of the board) with the stock 100nF WIMA caps.... I may even do a "quad" bypass and fit some silvered mica 220pF too.... I'll see how it goes EVOX polyprops fitted in parallel with the 3300uF caps. I will fit the 3uF and 100 WIMA caps tomorrow. I am also going to match the 2SK246 transistors on this one. I've bought an Atlas DCA Semiconductor component analyser and a bag of transistors so will match 6 of them as closely as possible. This time I will be going with a Galaxy Max enclosure from www.audiokit.it The model number is GX 387M and internal dimensions are 310 x 170 x 80 which is custom made for the Panda board! I have used these enclosures before and they are absolutely TOP CLASS... really solid and heavy. They are 32,16 Euros each (£27 GBP) and far more classy looking than the Panda enclosures, the only thing is you will have to drill them yourself. The Galaxy enclosure weighs 2.8 kilos so shipping from Italy to the UK / Europe will be 19,50 Euros (£17 GBP) making the total cost for this "luxury" cabinet £44 GBP. Audiokit now accept paypal (thank god!) I went off them for a while as they insisted you e-mail them your credit card details but they now seem to have entered the modern world so I will be buying lots from them again.... top class gear at VERY good prices and the Galaxy enclosures are beautiful

Audiokit also do some nice knobs..... one of these would look the dog's bollocks on the front of a Galaxy enclosure

I have been trying a LOT of different headphones and music with Ian's Panda 2 and deffo prefer the 150 ohm gain resistors instead of the 300R: It's a more useable range with easy to drive / hard to drive 'phones.... the RK27 tracks pretty well "anyway" at low levels so this is a "no brainer"

Meant to add..... I have fitted "naked" UF4001 in place of the stock 1N4001..... all small steps, not a "giant" leap for Mankind

Have to agree - I bought one with my last case, then used it on the XCANS until Mike's normal X series knob is back in stock. Syd

Frans will probably fall off his chair when he sees this and call it totally unnecessary but I have found triple bypassing to be quite effective "sonically" in the past. Just to re-cap (pun not intended) The stock kit comes with 3300uF power caps and 100nF WIMA film caps which bypass them. In this instance I have dispensed with the 100nF WIMA caps and have used 100nF EVOX polyprops directly across the 3300uF caps instead: I have then fitted 2u2 (2.2uF) WIMA (50V) film caps in the 100nF position so now we have the 3300uF bypassed by an EVOX 100nF and a WIMA 2.2uF film cap> I have then gone to the underside of the board and bypassed the 2.2uF WIMA film caps with 220pF WIMA polyprops: Ready to be soldered into position (held in place with double sided sticky tape) Soldered: Next up is a 2.2pF silvered Mica.
