I've had a niggling doubt about this for a while but today I proved it to myself. My neighbours TV is the other side of the wall to my hifi setup. They work weird hours and their TV is often in use into the small hours (oh the joy of semi-detached living). I had considered that it might be their TV that was making my hifi sound harsh and noticing that they were out this morning (first time in months) I tried my system. Harshness pretty much gone! I have all kinds of mains cleanup devices... a fancy Isolating transformer, the BT thingy and an Isotek mains multway with filtering. All that in various permutations has taken some of the harshness away but it doesn't really sound that great until 3 or 4am when they've finally gone to bed and I wake upo in a chair and try the system out again. If this is, as I suspect, some kind of airborne RF problem how can I solve it? I can't really move my system (got one of those wife things that can be more harsh than the system sound) and I can't ask next door to move their TV so how can I shield the hifi from it without 'er indoors complaining that it looks ugly. An impossible problem to solve perhaps?

Make sure every item of your equipment is shielded AND grounded (the shield should be connected to ground. If you've got battery fed items, you can and should still ground the housing.
You could also try to shield the wall by building in some (grounded!) chicken wire fence.
I'm sure other ideas by other members will follow.
Cheers, Marc

Only one way to truly find out.
Go to your neighbours and ask them to assist you.
They should have the TV on for a while when you are listening to your gear and then totally switch it off (even pull the power cord) and note the time they did this.
You listen at the same time (as agreed with the neighbours) and see if you can notice when the sound changes and note the time.
Then compare the time and see if it matches. Perhaps repeat this 2 or 3 times.
Only when you are sure this is causing it you can do something about it.
