I have this spare CD player which I had forgotten all about. A Marantz CD63SE. You see I replaced it with a bargin upgrade years ago a Marantz CD63 MK II KI Signature (£50 from a close friend when he upgraded, I had kids he didn't hence he is now of the Cyrus.....very nice indeed) which still lives as part of my system in the front room. Both of the Marantz very reasonable players IMHO. Sooooo the ideaSo a few days ago I think hold on I have the CD63SE tucked away and I am not using it and what did I buy last month well a NECO V2 hmmmmm Now it just so happens amongst the interconnects not in use I have a QED Audio - J2P phono to 3.5mm jack (bought a couple of years back never really used) Ting!!! went the light above my head....... Not only could I use my lovely little Neco everywhere I like I have the potential to very easily set up a little piece of heaven in my bedroom and easily tucked away CD player (the bulkiest part permanently set up out of sight to keep the better half happy) with the Neco and headphones joining it as and when I please, cool! Bed time listening form CD rather than MP3... Now I'll grant you its not the way/direction the QED cable was supposed to run as its supposed to be from MP3/Laptop etc to and amp but I think this is worried about to much sometimes so I test on the KI Signature setup in the front room. KI - QED - Neco - Grados and yep no prob there at all Great!!! I think, time to dig out the CD63SE set up in front room and test. This could be the get me by option till I can afford the sort of permenant style headphone amp I am looking for and not in the front room now but the bedroom....two rooms of music and portable options are go. So I set it up grab some CD's as well once setup in front room may have to test for a while before move to bedroom tomorrow as partners fast asleep in bed bless her. All connected up, plug in, turn on the CD player annnndddd NOTHING!!! Heart sinks, ahhh I think it was working when I used it last and its been tucked away boxed in cupboard so nust be just the fuse. Joy! Change the fuse plug in hit the power switch, nothing. Just the click of the switch. Not even a glimmer out of the CD player. Open up the CD player give her a blast with an air duster, can also see two fuse type things on the circuit board (now I am well amateur here but I try) and both have clear bodies and the wires look intact....good! One last try, this time I plug the Grados directly into the Marantz with the 1/4" adapter in the vain hope that this may make some difference....desperation was sinking in. Plug in, turn on and nooootthingg! Such a great idea that would have expanded my listening areas and options that have fallen back to nothing extra at all, very frustrating seeing as all the Marantz CD63SE player has been doing is sitting there doing nothing for a couple of years. How can it just stop working when its resting??? lol so inconsiderate!!! A gutted BmxargH p.s. though I do feel a tad better for posting and getting it off my chest.....

Life is so unfair at times. If the CDP was a real piece of junk, no doubt it would still be plugging along. Some of that old cheap gear just won't quit.

First I am going to ask the obvious, did you change the fuse in the mains plug with a "known" good fuse? ie: was it a new one or one that was kicking about in a drawer? It's very odd that the CD player should be totally dead, ie: no lights, no whirring noises, nothing.... The the CD63 is usually a very reliable beast. It does have two internal fuses and just "looking" at them is not a good enough test, you'll have to get a multimeter (a cheap £5 one will do) and actually do a continuity test.... if you hear a "beeeeep" then the fuse is OK, if you hear nothing, then, time to replace it. If you want to go "el cheapo mode" then put the fuses in an envelope, send them to me and I will test them for you Don't give up on it yet mate

I once "mothballed" my hi-fi for about 10 years, I left it in a spare room at my parents house with other odds and ends while I was moving about doing various jobs. When I retrieved it, the Marantz CD player was fine, but the casette deck was a gonner, it powered up, but just made funny squeeking noises when you pressed play. In a fit of pique, I threw it, and all the casettes I had, in the bin. I don't think I've listened to a cassette since.

There is no way I am giving up yet!!!! Like I say both these players may be aged now but I still rate them both as quality! I too thought it odd that there is just nothing at all (just dead) as I have never had a prob with either up till now. I would have expected a skipping CD, or drive first i.e. dodgy laser or something first. Yeah I swapped the two fuses from the SE & the KI Signature over as I knew the Signature is working. Very easy to do as its a sealed plug with just the pull down compartment for the fuse. If I could have seen what spec/type/fuses they were last night I probably would have just ordered some last night (as I can'y imagine they are too pricey) in the heat of the moment but could see nothing written on them to give me a clue I will do everything I can within reason to get this back up and running as I like them so much. Plan was to pair it with a V1 or V2 eventually.....Bedroom sounds done!!!! If the worst comes to the worst then the drive etc would be back up for the Signature but I won't to get it back, I mean its probably something minor its had no knocks and to totally die like thats just plain wierd! As for the fuses dunno whats inside the SE compared to the Signature but if the same fuses I could try swaping those over, then there is the multimeter or (with my faith in humanity restored, it is every now and again) I may even send those fuses to you yet Mr PF. I have a new quest!!!

Every cloud has....... Emails back from Marantz and apparantly they do not have a service manual on file as this is before they were up and put online, so can't tell me name of fuses parts, seems a tad odd :S Out of warranty service then and they have suggested someone I would have to courier the player to....more costs nope not doing that I mean I could probably get a decent player 2nd hand from Ebay if needed but I want my 63 SE working again. Found two places I reckon may service it in Bath so am sending emails to see if they will look at and quote. Do drop off on way to or from work then. On the upside Sound and Vision 2011 is on in Bristol this weekend. I am away Booooo! However the same friend I bought the Marantz Signature from is upgrading speakers this time and going. His old Castle Severn II's are now mine once he has new ones and for a stonkingly good price Sooo then just to get that SE sorted......if not find a nice little player on Ebay! Well that and a X-Can V1 or 2 which I keep bidding on as they seem to be on there quite a bit but just edging over that price I am willing/can afford to pay at the mo........all in good time, all in good time Better sound in lounge, unexpected but sorted! Sounds upstairs processing! ..............Oh and don't even get me started on the fact my parents move back from the USA in the summer and the overtime my mind is doing on the savings I could make on another set of headphones they could send back with all their gear

Yakka yakka Had shop/service people ring me today part and labour to fix the Marantz CD63 SE.... £50 Two weekish delivery on the part but with the £20 I put down thats only a bit of time and £30 to go! Then bedroom Marantz/Neco/Grado setup done..... eventually leading to Neco being replaced by some sort of valve amp. Two rooms of music (my music ohhhh so selfish) happy days

Nope mate apparently its the 'regulator transistor' which has failed (means bugger all to me). They are having prob getting part as its an older player etc hence the time. Most other places wanted £50+ up front to look at it they only wanted the £20 hence me going with them as I didn't want to lump up a huge amount of money to find the repair would cost more than was worth doing and just losing £50. £20 seemed like an affordanle gamble and may just have paid off

lol I had a feeling that you may come back with something like that. Tis the price (literally) you pay when you have no clue where to start looking for the problem or how to solve it........which unfortunately I don't I had exhausted my vast (cough) knowledge by changing/checking the fuse in the plug and the fuses I found once opening on the circuit board...... I keep myself in slight ignorance on this one Pinky mate as they were after all the cheapest I managed to find in Bristol/Bath to just have a look at it

Yes, right enough, you are paying for them to "find" the fault.... the actual repair may only cost 50p but it is their time you will be paying for... the main thing is, you will have your CD player back in good working order

My information is very OLLLLLLLD, but there is a place (as of 8 years ago ) called Portishead Radio, High St., Portishead. They were very reasonable. Another round the back streets of Taunton, specialised in Sony repairs, though their name escapes me at the mo. I had a WMD6C speed fault cured there very reasonably. Just future reference stuff, if they still exist?

Do love both my Marantz players and still rate them highly, good quality players and as you say just to have it up and running again is way cool......though my better half may disagree once those headphones come out to play in bedroom and thanks CJ will keep that in mind!

Well got round to picking up my repaired Marantz today and have been messing about to check it out before setting up in bedroom. Neco V2 being a temporary step in (which will be used for this and round and about etc) until I get that valve amp I covet. Spent an age comparing the sound direct from the CD player and then through the Neco V2......very nice! Neco gives a much better all round sound in so many ways, depth, seperation, fullness and on and on. This little box still stuns me with each new thing I try it with/for. Dug out and old QED cable (3.5mm jack to L&R phono) I bought years back to connect an old MP3 player to my seperates system with very disappointing results due to compressed files and the player not being great, was a hey I could connect my MP3 player to my system hit random and presto. Didn't work. Now I know its running in the opposite direction now from left/right phono to the 3.5 jack but it positively shines feeding the Neco. Then there are my Grados well still love them and they won't be just for use in the bedroom like the Neco they travel just wish I had more money and more phones now but hey don't we all!?! More than chuffed with this little setup which will move to my bedroom shortly and be upgraded amp wise at some point and possibly even headphone wise at a later date. As for now I pretty stoked with the results, a good day!! Oh and sorry for the poor mobile shots :S
