Thanks Mike. They arrived this morning. Does the 'EB' stand for extra bollocks? Rather good eh? I've come back for an edit ...... Mike, these tubes light up the Audio Technica ad700 really well. I went through a pack of headphones with them and the ad700 seems to have developed a little more bass impact which makes them sound more balanced to me. There's a stronger slam with the new tube and I've only had them going for the best part of a day!! It just shows that the combo is more important than the individual headphone!! I tend to use the AD700 for speech since it doesn't give the 'rumble' effect with mens' speech, but in actual fact, with these tubes, it seems more 'musical' and just balanced sounding. I've got a problem now I've been with Mick's PS1000 for a week. My headphones all sound shite!! The HD650 just isn't right tonally and the Grados really highlight the problems that it definitely has. It's weird that I feel more comfortable with the ad700 and these tubes than the Senns. The imaging also seems superior for some reason. I'm starting to wonder if I've shifted something by putting the new tubes in. I'm not sure whether it's time to try the w1000 - I suspect it may sound good with this amp. (V1) I never really used low impedance cans on the V1 since I didn't think it would be the best option but the ad700 really isn't a bad listen. (with those tubes) Many thanks Mike. They are a bargain and I'm really grateful for your help improving my headphone listening at home. You really have - before coming on RG, I wouldn't have dreamed of sitting at home with headphones on my head. My views on headphones have totally changed.

Ian, Leave the V2 switched on for a few days and then have a listen I think you'll be pleasantly surprised once these valves begin to "cook"

But Rabbit is no ordinary rabbit as he's a muso and is trained to detect any small variations critically that are more like real music.

You need someone --7 like - cold and clinical. Musos get too wrapped in sound. (not necessarily realistic sound) I'm beginning to think 5hat a 'no-compromise' headphone is the way to go Alex. We tend to look for a cheap headphone that gets close, but I'll be honest, they don't!! It has painfully pointed out the weaknesses of the Senn HD650 for instance. Anyway, some people are happy to blow a grand or more on an amplifier. Compared to the £24,000 set up I trialled, it's peanuts!!

Actually, what's the difference between 6N23P-EB and 6N1/2/6/P-EB. Are they compatible with each other without tralling the net for the answer. ;D

I am so close to order a pair. Any opinions how these differ from regular 6h23p valves in sound? I replaced a couple of 6H23N with these 6H23N-EB last week in one of my X-CAN V2's, there is a definite improvement in sound quality. Whether or not it is down to the "newness" of the 6H23N-EB or the construction I am not sure.... the first 30 minutes I wasn't too impressed but once they had been heated for an hour or so (from new) all I can say is WOW! The most noticeable areas of improvement (to my ears) were in the bass department (deeper, tighter, faster), the mids (macro detail a lot more prominent, easier to focus in on), the highs (much smoother, not as ragged as the 6H23N can be)...... another area I homed in on instantly is the added "air" around instruments, instead of them all being on the same plane crammed together they are now dancing in the air and it is easier to pick out the individual components in the mix as they have "space" around them. These are, by far, the best valves I have heard in an X-CAN V2 and to pay mega bucks for Mullards / amperex etc. seems daft.... I don't think there is ONE pair of Mullard E88CC (for example) or one pair of Amperex bugle boys on sale that are "GENUINE" NOS (new old stock - Brand new but never used) all of the examples I have come across are either fakes or pulls (pulled out of old equipment)..... the 6H23N-EB I have ARE genuine NOS from sealed factory boxes so when you fire one of these puppies up it will be the first time they have glowed What he said pretty much ^^ Not the same slam yet, but lots of midrange detail, the glare in my set-up is gone! Those Raytheon tubes were distorting something chronic. Good riddance! I've had the V3 turned on for 48 hours so will see if those features become more pronounced. I'm not getting any difference in 'attack' yet over the 6H23P, but 'decay' is a little more noticeable. Running nice and cool too. Mike-when were these made? Cheers~(and might I say crazy-quick service !!) John

Mike, I've received my 6N23P-EB's and the knobs yesterday. I changed the Philips E88CC SQ tubes in my X-Can V3 to the Russians. First impression is very good, but I can't say much after a couple of minutes. The amp is not even warm at the moment... I will post again here after a couple of days listening with the Russians. Many thanks for the fast delivery. Christian
