I have 500GB of Apple lossless files.... what is the easiest way to convert them all over to FLAC? I want to keep the 500GB of Apple Lossless files on the HD they reside on but want to copy them onto another HD in FLAC format..... so, I will have one HD "Apple Lossless" and the other HD "FLAC".....
Comments appreciated.

Yes, DBpower is a good option.

A free way on windows is to uses ffmpeg: ffmpeg.arrozcru.org/autobuilds/ffmpeg.arrozcru.org/autobuilds/ffmpeg-latest-mingw32-static.7zTo unzip it you can use: www.7-zip.org/downloads.sourceforge.net/sevenzip/7z920.exeCopy the ffmpeg.exe in the bin directory of the archive to the directory holding you m4a files and put the following line in a file with a .bat extension (eg convert.bat) in the same directory: for /f "tokens=*" %%a IN ('dir /b *.m4a') do call ffmpeg -i "%%~na%%~xa" -acodec flac "%%~na.flac" Running a batch file is a simple matter of clicking on it. Batch files can also be run in a command prompt or the Start-Run line. In that case, the full path name must be used unless the file's path is in the path environment. It will convert every file in the directory from apple lossless. Easy. Just change the output file name in this case to include the path to your flac harddrive (eg. "e:\flac\"%%~na.flac")

Thanks, it is great Just doing a batch conversion now (Apple lossless to MP3) seems to be working fine

Do the converted files compare ok with the original Mike? I use DBpower Ian, my ears can not detect any difference when converted to flac or mp3, and its very user friendly. Mick.

I'll give it a go. I have random files that need converting but I'm always concerned about what these programmes do to the data. I convert films and they seem OK, but just a little wary of sound files because I'm sucking every nuance out of them I suppose. No sign of Mr Senn yet? You know, you did a great deal there!! I've been looking around.

Had an email Friday from supersonido regarding the Senns, asking for my passport number, and telephone number for shipping purposes, which i have forwarded. ATB Mick.

Shite...... I just converted 700GB of files and was expecting them to all go into their original folders.... nope, I've got one folder with like 25,000 files in it... erm, not what I wanted. Any ideas how to batch convert but, at the same time, keep them in their individual folders?

DBpower can do what you want. Don't know by heart though, you'll need to find a tutorial.
And i also love DBpower, but it can mess about with tags somehow (convert ape to flac and it leaves mp3 tags where you want the other kind for flac. I've forgot about the details, but be aware.

Any ideas how to batch convert but, at the same time, keep them in their individual folders? You can use the "dynamic folder" option and they are put in folders, just like you wish.. You should be able to choose it in the trial version, mine is bought and paid for and it gives some advantages, at least it did at the time as the trialversion did have a maximum conversion count, some years ago. Should have mentioned it earlier I have not encountered any mistagging from dbpower.. The master of bad tagging is Itunes, it fecks up album art and delete files if you let it manage your files, so do not go there.. If only I could find a player that could do smartlists, the way Itunes do I would ditch Itunes in a second..

No, I didn't mean mistagging. When changing filetype, tag type should sometimes changes too. It creates the new type but leaves the old type. If you have some nifty tag formatting, both tag types are different and it confuses some players (plus it increases the filesize unnecessary).

Mike, try the following.
After Folder --> The actual drive and folder location you want to write the transcoded files too After Dynamic -->[IFCOMP][IFVALUE]album artist,[album artist],Various Artists[]\[album]\[track][artist][][IF!COMP][IFVALUE]album artist,[album artist],[artist][]\[album]\[track] [artist][] - [title]
That should put everything in folders by artist and then album name under artist. It will also group compilation albums under the "Various Artists" folder.
