The change to Mk2 status has brought major changes in both the DAC and power supply circuitry. The main power supply features a toroid that wouldn't disgrace a budget integrated amp with a second toroid powering the analogue circuits thus isolating them from the digital gubbins. Five printed circuit boards each have their own regulated power rail and the mains is fitered before use. Tweeks like the rubbery coating on the casework show that all those years of vibration analysis with turntables weren't wasted.

No not really Ian, still like my Senn 250`s, the Grado`s i find nice to listen to late evening, also been trying to get a nice comfortable fit with the HD-25s, getting there with a bit of heat and careful bending, really like the SQ on these also, great for Shpongal.

My Rocksan has been hooked up to my main system, still using my cd17 KI for HP listening, will give the Rocksan a go through the HP Amps in the New Year.

If you are looking at getting a Rocksan Ian also try the Rega Saturn, that was very nice to, slightly thinner sound to my ear, but superb detail, might suit classical music very well, would have been very happy with that also, apart from its a top loader, and requires more space than i have above it for loading, and its cheaper.

I think that there would be as many Rega lovers out there as Rocksan, and at about £600 cheaper a great buy if the sound signature suits your ears, and its top loading was not an issue.
I just preferred the sound the Rocksan produced, not exactly better just different, if it had been a front loader probably would have took the Rega, and pocketed the price difference, as i tried them side by side i just preferred the Rocksan as both produce stunning sound quality IMHO.

I don`t pretend to know all the inner workings of these players but i can see how the upgrades stated in the facts you have found would push the bar higher on the latest players SQ`s.

As stated in my last post the Rega Saturn was also a fine sounding player which i could have easily lived with and enjoyed, no doubt this unit probably contains a similar internal layout and components as the Rocksan.

Understand where you are coming from regarding cd quality and agree that some copies are absolutely rubbish in the SQ stakes, but i am used to this problem as vinyl suffers the same kind of effects from rubbish and worn out pressing dies.

Master copies alleviate this problem to certain degree but of course at a cost premium, which, as i do not buy to much vinyl these days is a price that i am prepared to pay.

They made a really nice amp as well. I don't know if it's still sold, but I had one and loved it. It was the 'Candy' I think. Really nice sound.

I came up through the Linn/Naim route after starting with a little Nad amp (3020se)and Marantz CD player. (Cd60se). I had the old Garrard deck and changed it for a Thorens which was pretty good and finally a Sondek. They all cost me a fortune in styluses. I was forever playing around with the things.

I loved my original set up (Nad/Thorens/Kef speakers) and thought for a long time it was the bee's knees. Started playing around with speakers as well as decks etc like the old Mission (upside down configuration) which really didn't have a lot of bass to speak of and then on to a Cyrus 1 and then a Cyrus 2, then adding the power supply and so it goes on.

It's so easy to spend a packet on cheap stuff when in fact it's really better to go for it and get something special in the first place.

As for headphones - I had some awful ones in those days. JVC headphones that were cups like the Grados, made in plastic or leather and the balance was adjusted by turning little volume knobs on the outside of the headphone cups.

Also at one time, I had this JVC receiver which was a funny piece of kit - on a long piece of wire as an aerial!!

With radio, I became absolutely anal about it and got a Yagi beam up on the roof with a rotator and actually turned it all over the place to receive the best possible FM signal I could get. Multi path distortion was always the big problem on peaks; especially with Radio 3.

I also had a long wire down the garden for shortwave and made a tuning circuit to electronically match the wire to the frequency I was listening on. I had a Yaesu receiver.

I was so fanatical, it was daft. Now, I'll listen happily to a transistor radio as well as posh gear. I'm far more accepting now than I was.

Funny that, innit.

I spend most the day with a little Sony mini system spilling out radio tunes interspersed with tapes, CDs or laptop files. The speakers are not even "positioned", more like plonked where they can fit.

The Rox-Anne(sic) amps ARE nice too, though at the price bracket the new M series finds itself, there are a lot of worthy contenders.

If was to buy a replacement, traditional set up for home now (and had the dosh) I'd be lost for choice.

Ignoring all the equipment I have no experience of, I think it would be on the lines of...

A) CDP = Restek (then "Concret" now = "Epos")
Amp = 2nd hand, Exposure, active set up (again)
Speakers = 2nd hand,probably Naim SBL (again)

B) CDP = same
Amp = Chord pre
Speakers = ATC ASCM50sl

Both those are completely different but I'd find it hard to choose.

minefield! no wonder so many peeps make so many expensive mistakes.
