Hiya, wondered if any of you guys could help at all. I have beautifully Mike-modded v2. It started to hiss a fair bit so I changed the tubes which worked fairly well. I reduced the hissing a lot although it was still there. I could live with it... then I have left the amp unused for about a month (though it has been left on for that time). So I was ready for a good listening session and the hiss in the right ear sounded like I was standing on the atlantic coast in a gale (or thereabouts). Pretty bad...
Any ideas on what can have gone wrong here?

Swap L with R tube (L goes to R; R goes to L). If hiss goes from right to left - it is the tube. If not clean tube pins and tube socket with something like WD40.
In fact, clean tube pins and tube socket in any case.

Thank you FauDrei, I shall try it out tonight! I recommend you don't use "WD40" To tighten the sockets up get yourself a pin (or other pointy object) and gently prise the contacts in the socket inward... this tightens them up nicely.

Seems to be the tube as the hissing swapped ear when I swapped the tubes around. Mike, you have private message. :-)

Death of an X-can? I have tried with new tubes and it was exactly the same story as before. Great first, then the hiss gradually creeps in in the one channel. I am really clueless when it comes to electronics so any ideas as to what can cause this? Too much current that just fries the tube? Anyone else had this and knows a fix? Time for a new amp?

I think it's the valve that is hissing, even though you have another pair doesn't mean that something isn't wrong with one of them.... do the same thing again, swap them around and see if the hiss migrates to the other channel... if it does then it is definitely a problem with the valve.
Mike.

Thanks, I'll give it a go tomorrow. So there is no way the amp can screw up a valve? It just seems so odd that the same thing keeps happening... well twice anyway.

Amp will not screw up the valve.... don't worry.... the "hissing" you describe pretty much 100% points to a failing valve.... swap them around, if the problem migrates to the other channel you have found the culprit..... Did you buy these valves from me? If so, I will send you a new pair. Mike.

If you don't have any luck with the valves PM me and I'll arrange for the amp to be shipped to me.... don't worry, it will be fine

Finally got around to swapping them around, and unsurprisingly the hiss swapped ear, so I guess it is the valves... but am I just very unlucky with the valves or is there more to this?
