This thing is insane! My one arrived today and, jesus, it's small How the hell do they get a battery and all the gubbins into that tiny little thing...... it truly is amazing! I remember Raymond Baxter on Tomorrow's World back in the 70's saying that one day we would all be listening to music through something this small but I never thought it would actually come to fruition in my lifetime. At last, something "discrete" enough to make me want to listen to music "on the move".... it can be clipped onto any part of your clothing and that's you good to go! No need to carry a fekkin' backpack type thing... just clip this little thing on somewhere and that's it. The ipod blurb says: "when you clip on an 8GB or 16GB iPod nano, you’ll have plenty of tunes to make it through your commute, your workout and beyond"....... erm my "commute" consists of dragging myself out of bed and walking 50 yards to the workshop and my "workout" consists of a cup of tea and a fag so I well never be seen participating in this type of weird behaviour with my ipod nano: Imagine this guy with one clipped onto his hat..... this is more true to my "usage" patterns than anything associated with sport or "workouts": I've only had her up and running for a couple of hours and am stunned by the SQ out of such a small thing... you just cannot fault it.... it's pure magic getting half decent SQ out of something the size of an after eight mint. I have loaded it with some Apple Lossless files....you won't get many of these onto it's 16GB "space".... I say "space" as it's obviously not a hard drive.... my first computer had a 164MB hard drive and it was built like a TANK, this after eight mint has 16 GIGA BYTES of storage? Mindblowing! At this rate of knots we will have a chip implanted into our heads and will be downloading terrabytes of music and entertainment direct into our heads via some "head port" type of connector. We will have entertainment "implants" fitted into our ears and eyes at birth (on the NHS) and these can be upgraded at our own cost later on in life.... absolutely MENTAL the rate of knots way technology is progressing and the next step will definitely be incorporating this technology into our bodies.... nano robots travelling through the brain to fit it and there is room for massive storage in our bodies.... whip out the appendix and fit an Exabyte drive in it's place. Think I'm talking crap? Well, just how much smaller can it get? The next logical step is to integrate technology into the body and not just "entertainment" technology either.... a back up device in case your heart stops pumping, a colony of nano bots who will do a lot of jobs like de-clog arteries, keep your eyes in good health, de wax your ears, perform surgery..... this is the future as I see it.... there will be no need for televisions, audio gear, telephones, computers, doctors..... everything will be fitted into your body.... we will all be connected and be able to download the content of each other's brains we will all, in effect, be "connected" as a universal whole.... there will be no need for teaching as we will be more intelligent than Einstein when we get our initial memory module implant at birth.... just think of it, a baby more intelligent than Einsten but to a fully chipped adult that baby would be considered as "thick as a plank"...... Anyways, back on topic, Ian has (very kindly) sent me a rake of earbuds to try so I will go through them one by one with the nano and report back. Funnily enough, I am listening right now through a pair of Senn HD-25/1 and it's driving them incredibly well. The Human League's "The Lebanon" is massaging my ears at the moment (a group I never liked but do now that I know what they were about) this little puppy (the Nano) drives the HD-25/1 very well.... not to ear shattering levels but MORE than loud enough for a closed back phone which suppresses ambient noise very well. I could waffle a load of shite about how I can hear Phil Oakey's trousers "rustle" as he adjusts his trouser snake from left to right but I won't..... I will just say that I am THOROUGHLY enjoying this little marvel of technology and I am APPRECIATING the decades of work that have gone into making this little guy a reality. It's magic

I agree Mike.
Underrated because of the name but a really decent listen that gives you the option of earbuds, plugging in to the car system (as I often do) or listening in higher quality via a portable amp and decen headphone or even straight into a good amp and headphone. It looks ridiculous but doesn't let you down.
I have 4 generations of Nano and I feel that they've tweaked the sound on this one.
It really is good. Lossless or wav into the Panda then an HD250 and you won't believe where all that sound is coming from!!
Match it with the IBasso T3 and you have a mini delight with a good pair of headphones. So tiny, that amp and player will fit in a pocked with ease.
I use mine every day.

Again, my BIGGEST (and only) criticism is the battery.... no WAY on Earth will you be able to replace the battery in this... it is a sealed unit and once the battery packs in you either use it connected to the USB cable or BIN it.
I do not like this idea of "generations" with each new "generation" being brainwashed into thinking that a "possible" 500 cycles is a "good" thing and if they get more than two years out of it before they throw it in the bin they've done well.....
This is NOT good and it is NOT "green"..... "good" is being a custodian of a product that will last you for many years and possibly last a good few generations for your offsprings.
Electronic items have now entered the realm of "consumables"... much like a battery..... we are being conned into buying a new product every year (a new generation) and EXPECT things to be thrown in the bin as soon as the "next generation" comes out.
I do NOT like this..... I expect things to last.... I have radios from the 1930's that are still giving me good service today (80 years old) and have an old gramaphone that is almost 100 years old..... This little Nano will last two years tops (IMO) and will then be bin fodder.... is this the way to go?
Mike.

The drawback of this item, the small resolution of the screen.it looks a little bit unsharp for my taste. I felt a bit clumsy using the touch screen of this little device.it was more sliding out of my hands trying to tame the menu.i felt i actually use a ipod shuffle. the sound...puke:/ for that amount of $. ...my 5 years old iriver player sounds better as anyone of the ipods.additional it has much more possibilities to optimise and correct the sound to my taste+srs wow 2.0.it uses a rechargable AAA battery for 20+ hours and its weight 27 gram so its small and light.unfortunate the flash memory is only 1GB:/.
so in the end i bought the 5th gen nano.

I find the Iriver puts out quite a lot of hiss although it has a more powerful output. I have a couple of H120's.
The resolution isn't so much an issue with video not available on it imo.
However, I myself prefer the generation before (4th?) because of the video.
There are improvements in sound though in this new one. My guess is they may well go back to no. 4 in Generation 6!!
The battery thing is a pain Mike. It is a buy, use and chuck device, like them all really. As you say, it keeps people buying them.
I have a feeling that this 5th Generation version will not do as well for them as the older two.
However, it is tiny and just not noticeable when you use it. I bet you lose it at some time, Mike!

They'll be a one of those "orientation thingies" in the nano so it will always be the right way up. As the wrists turned it will flip over.

I had never theexperience with the hard disc players from IRIVER like the H120. I had only nand flash players, so all the T series has no annoying hiss at all.if its here than only in lower quality audio files. It drives even the AKG K501 very ok...wooow...with the volume 40max. no hiss at all.. unfortunate the new irivers are Yes, you're right about the Ipods!!! As Mike says, they seem to have a throw away attitude and when the previous models' batteries start playing up, they produce a new model. A bit cheeky. For me, I have a problem with bat's hearing. I seem to be affected very badly by noise in the line like hiss and hum. I'm not exactly sure why but I really can't use amps or DAPs that hiss or hum. It just drives me nuts I'm afraid. I'm more sensitive to those types of noise than anything else I think. Once I know it's there, I can't focus on the music. For that reason, in the UK, when I was using the radio heavily, I put a massive aerial up on the roof in order to put hiss down and even with a strong signal, I could never get rid of it and along with the poor quality of most broadcasts and the noise, I gave up on it. I was using a good quality Sony receiver but not good enough for me. The Ipods don't put as much noise out as the old IRivers in spite of what all the IRiver owners say because I know that sonically they are highly regarded. I also felt that it was odd having a line out that reacted to a volume control. Having said that, the Ipods aren't quiet and if you out the signal to an amp and turn up, you'll hear noise there all right. It's just lower than my 3 IRivers!! Of course, if you feed a 90% or so signal out to an amp and then turn down, that'll mask it all in any case. I guess I'm just sensitive.

Sorry, I tried whitout an amp "Rum diary-Poisons that save lives" and and and...definetly hear a heavy grainny hiss in the background at the beginning on the Iriver. I tried it on 5th gen ipod shuffle and hello, the same annoying hiss!OK its not so loud as on the iriver and its softer.actually sometimes i feel it even if a song is played. On the Iriver the sound is much more detailed, full bodied, if i think about the hiss i hear it clear and present, if i concentrate on the music the hiss virtually dissapears. The Ipod sounds muddy to me....and a bit softer hiss is present too in the same amount as in the Iriver,it feels not so deatailed as on the iriver .

I love the devil ..... Interesting though that one major criticism of the Nanos from so called 'pros' is that they don't sound as full as other players and to some extent, with the new version, I think there may have been a little tweaking in this area. I presume you're talking about the new nano? I didn't think it was too bad to be honest. I would have preferred the version before though with the sound like the new one. Hopefully that's the next Nano! My H120's are not hissing like snakes. Don't get me wrong. The extra bass you're getting from the IRiver could be the result of a better headphone output. Or at least it's not so 'controlled' by EU constraints. The Ipod from the bottom gives a healthier output and is a fairer comparison with the output of the IRiver. If you send a bit more out from the Ipod, it'll 'fatten' up and is a tad closer to the Iriver.

No hiss at all on my Nano Filled with Apple lossless files via handmade dock to 3.5mm cable into Neco V2 driving HD-25/1 Mkll..... sounds VERY nice to my ears. Are you listening to MP3 or compressed files? Feed this thing with lossless files and it's actually pretty damned good! Quite a nice tone with plenty of detail.

Well, I don't much to speak of either Mike...... I'm talking about going from the dock into an amp and turning up FULL in order to hear it. Certainly not at listening levels, but my H120's hiss at normal levels very slightly, so you're aware that it's running before the music starts whereas, you don't get that on an Ipod. If I listened at the volume where I hear hiss on the Nano, I'd be on the threshold of pain!!!!

I don't get this criticism of a "lack of video player" either.... erm, just "what" type of video would you be wanting to watch on something the size of an after eight dinner mint? I prefer to watch a 42 inch screen for that type of thing. This is pretty much a purely "audio" device and I, for one, like that! It's not an all singing, all dancing wankfest that "twitters" or "facebooks" (whatever the hell all THAT is about anyway!) it simply plays MUSIC and, as such, is a step in the right direction if you are a "music" lover. I mean, come on..... a "video" player? You'd have to be REALLY strapped for entertainment to resort to viewing videos on that screen.... I read one review and the guy was unhappy as the Nano had lost the ability to take videos...... "Many people will miss the ability to make videos of their friends" what??!! Buy a fukkin' video camera if you want to make videos of your friends you muppet!.... what the hell is wrong with these people? Fukkin' "facebook"? We have become a nation of exhibitionists and peeping Tom's! There was a guy on the bus today waffling on about how he had a big "bust up" on facebook with his friends..... eh??!! Get a life you sad bastard!! IMO, the type of people who do all these things are the same type of people you meet in trailer parks... as COMMON as MUCK! Good god, the other week I heard two girls outside a shop... "I text him, he text me back, I got him back on facebook"...... eh?!! First off you dim bitch it's "I sent him a text message" NOT "I text him".... what the hell type of world are we living in now where "texting and videoing and facebooking and twittering" have become normal everyday events? I am quite happy with the new ipod Nano and the more people who dislike it the MORE I love it!

I was comparing the 5th gen. nano with the iriver.no amps attached. adding a neco portable even a crap player would sound amazing:D. I tried to adapt to the 6th nano.they simply reinwented the ipod shuffle again.thats not ok for the price of 129.99£ first.i dont liked the touch screen, its too small with poor low resolution and blurry.second.it is a shuffle with a touch screen LOL.third.the screen is small and that touch thingie is cumbersome. so i got the 5th ignoring the fact that the 6th is the way to go news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-10291701-37.htmlemployee misstreatment, illegal overtime, suicide workers, poisoning @ work,non-recyclable hardware components, and toxins thats the hardware. the software - a bunch of forward thinking lunatics who are agree to pay whatewer apple says to be hip and up to date with the modern standarts.

Have you been to an optician lately? My eyesight is terrible these days but I can still see what I'm doing when it comes to selecting an album and hitting "play" without the aid of spectacles.... is it "blurry" or do you need glasses? Yep, the conditions the ipod workers work under are attrocious... they are treated like robots and paid a pittance. Do you know it would take an ipod worker 1 YEAR to be able to afford an ipod? That is clearly NOT right. So..... what to do about it? Stop buying ipods? Stop buying ANYTHING made in China? (it's the same, across the board in China)..... it wasn't too long ago that the working class in the UK were suffering the same conditions.... no pension, no insurance, a 14 hour day in a mine just to put a loaf of bread on the table.... It seems that ANY growing economy can only properly "grow" by enslaving the weak / poor and working them into the ground for a pittance. Do I agree with it? NO! will I stop buying Apple products? No!.... there's the thing, we are so full of shit when it comes to "human rights / working conditions"... we disagree with it but we still keep buying INTO it! China is "still" pretty out there when it comes to treating people with respect and dignity, we can only hope that things get better for those poor sods who have to spend 14 hours each day working their arses off in a glorified concentration camp.... "Hope" is all we can offer as there is NO WAY we will pass up a bargain is there? If the Ipods were made in the west they would cost £1500 each.... would you buy one then? Do you REALLY care about those poor bastards who are slaving so we can "twitter" and listen to music "on the move"? If so, stop buying into it. Hold on though..... if we stop buying they will be jobless and starving. It's a really unfair world isn't it?
