I've just bought a v3 off ebay. It arrived today and after connecting to my system and playing a cd the output is distorted through my AKG 701's if the volume is above 54. It appears that it is only on the left channel. Is this a warmup issue or is there a serious fault? Any help please......

Firstly, did you get it for a very low price? If yes it's worth investigating further. If you obtained it for the "going rate" as PWO I'd be inclined to return it as faulty. Assuming the first, open it up, make sure the valves are properly seated. Yes? ok, swap them around. Does the distortion travel with the moved valve? Yes? = faulty valve. Replace the pair (with the possibility of charging it to the seller). You could, of course, purchase these valves from Pink Floyd (Mike) along with the very worthwhile upgrade kitThat's my pennys worth PS er, welcome to the forum

I concur on opening up the unit to make sure the valves are properly seated, if not the issue I also agree with swapping the valves to see if the problem follows the valve currently on the left channel. While the unit is open check the capacitors to see if any one is bulging, an indication of a problem. If you happen to have a multimeter check the voltage output of the wallwart.

A dodgy valve IMO... as Chris says, swap them over.... if the problem migrates to the other channel then it's time to replace the pair of valves.... SIMPLES!

Thanks for the replies guys. After leaving it running for 24hrs the problem seems to have corrected itself. I can only assume that as a second hand purchase it may not have been used for some time. I've connected it to my Arcam cd192 x-10v3 and x-psu and it sounds amazing compared to my previous amps. I'll start modding as soon as I get some time.
