Which is Spanish for Menu of the day.
Menu del dia's are everywhere in Spain, usually €8-€12, and consist of three courses and drink. They are usually good, no-nonsense meals, a salad and bread for starter, pork chops or spag bol as main and fruit or ice-cream as pudding, with wine and water to accompany the meal. Very good value.
However, we had a meal at a place called Bibianas', in San Fulgencio that has really set the mark.
The restaurant is one of the tidiest and 'swish' I've been to in Spain, nice and cool thanks to aircon inside, with nice cutlery and the like. The meal consisted of six courses, and we eat over a period of three hours, a very relaxed midday meal.
First course was proper home made Ali-oli, fresh tomato mixed with olive oil (Chris will know the proper name!) served with fresh baked bread rolls. This is a simple starter, which again was a step up from the normal fare served at other restaurants.
Second course was a plate piled high with lovely fresh prawns (gambas rojas) shared between the four of us. Very hard to beat the taste of fresh prawns I reckon!
Next, a lovley smooth pate, served with warm roast red onion and toast. The onion was a nice complement to the pate, and my boys really enjoyed it.
Next was a choice of a selection of cheeses and Spanish Hams, Pea and Chorizo soup, or a type of pork crackling/bacon dish, which we only figured when the next table hd it. We had the cheese/ham and I had the soup. Again, all good.
Main course was a choice of pork chops, lamb chops or chicken breast. We all opted for lampchops. When the plates came, the chops were served with a single large roast potato, roast carrot and roast tomato. The chops were just pink, and four were served on each plate. Again, very good.
Pudding, we we just managed, was a choice of cheesecake, gateaux, icecream or fruit salad. The puds that came were homemade and tasty.
The drinks with the meal were a bottle of wine (opened at the table) for my wife and I, bottled water, and several fanta limon's for my boys.
All in, one of the best meals I've had in Spain (for quality and service), and probably one of the best I've had - period.
Now, the point of all this is because I could not believe the price we were charged.
€10.80 each, which is about £8.80!
I really cannot understand how they are making money, although the restaurant has been there for a few years. Great quality food, but at such a ridiculously low price. Needless to say, we left a good tip. Obviously, not every menu del dia will be a knock out like this, but they are well worth trying if you visit Spain.
I really wish I could find something similar in the UK, not so much for the price, but for the great food.
