Picked up the iphone 4 this morning ... and as a iPod play wav files this thing is way better than any other incarnation. Direct into some Grado 325i and the bass and top end is very extended .. and this at first listen sounds way too good to be just a phone. At the highest volumes it's loud but the bass does get a bit bloated by then ... but at my normal listening levels this is perfectly acceptable with a reasonable stage and separation!! Excellent added benefit to the new toy!

I have a third generation iPod Touch with 32GB. I did the update to iPhone OS4 yesterday. The new iPhone OS looks and behaves great even with older iPhone/iPod-Touch generations (of course only those that are supported to run with OS4). According to the news, there are a couple of problems with certain iApps. I had no problem with the update, in fact it solved a problem that I had with iPhone OS 3.1.3. iPhone/iPod-Touch as mobile music source is great. I use my iPod-Touch/Neco-Portable/HD25-1/II combo every weekend while I'm in the train for longer time (each way slightly above 2 hours). I hope you all are enjoying the new iPhone OS4.

We have been lucky, the wife and I have had our iPhones since September of 2008 with no problems so far. Ours are 3G.

I don't want to sound like the PR department from Apple but what do you expect a company selling extended warrantees to say? They make their money from FEAR that your phone might not work.
"SquareTrade, which sells extended warranties for iPhones, said in a Computerworld report that 26 per cent of the devices break down - or break - in the first two years of ownership.".................
According to SquareTrade, three-year-old iPhones will experience a failure rate of 35 per cent to 40 per cent."
It is a no-brainer that anything portable will be subject to more damage than something stationary.

iPhones (or other mobile phones) don't need to get 10 years old. Most people change their mobile phones every 3-4 years (at least). They are not built for eternity, but usually they don't need to live longer than 5 years.
BTW: What can we expect from such a small device with so much electronics in it? Mobile use can be hard and lots of those tiny devices do suprisingly well. They are no tanks though.
(Too) fast innovation cycles are certainly something that is not always good for product quality.
