I've just decided to unpack my old X-cans which I assume is a v1 (doesn't say v2 on the back) and to hook it in to the X-Ray v3 player. I'm a total novice at this, so I have a couple of elementary questions:
First, is it possible to power the unit up if the PSU is the wrong polarity? The wall wart I'm using is not the original, so I really don't know that it's correct.
The reason for question 1 is...with a pair of headphones connected, I can hear that the unit is making some very strange whining and buzzing noises. I've read that some noises on startup are normal, but it's settling down to one channel only. Then, when I play a CD, it's very soft, and highly distorted. Is this a sign that something has gone wrong inside the X-unit? It was bought used in North America four years ago, and last used at that point, then shipped over to the UK and put instorage till tonight. It's quite possible that a valve or two may need replacing, but I'd love some feedback from you experts (no pun intended) before I troll off to Maplins.
Thanks, Nigel

Nigel Assuming that it is actually an X-Can V1, have you opened it up to check that the valves are fully seated in their sockets ? Do you have a Digital Meter so that youu can check some voltages ? As well as 12V for the valve heaters, there are also + and -15V supplies derived from 7815 and 7915 voltage regulators, and there should also be a derived + and - 30V HT supply. There is no point in racing out and buying another PSU until you check those things. The V1 uses a 12V AC wallwart, so it is not polarity conscious. You ARE using a 12V AC wallwart ?

Hi Nigel,
It's a 12volt AC PSU with 2,1mm DC connector. Firstly remove the valves and swap them round, if the noise migrates to the other channel then it is most definitely a failed / failing valve.
All the best,
Mike.

Sounds like a good idea, but see next section. Nigel The V1 uses a 12V AC wallwart, so it is not polarity conscious. You ARE using a 12V AC wallwart ? This is what they call an "OMG" moment - I told you I was a novice. Looks like the PSU I tried is DC! Off to the electronics store to get the right supply! Thanks for the help - I'll report back. N.

Well, now the power supply is right, the unit's working just fine ! Duh! Now, of course, the next thing is, do I upgrade the poser supply to a Li'l Pinky?
