Probably Leo and SandyK related ... but I was reading the attached ... myweb.tiscali.co.uk/nuukspot/decdun/sb3.html#sb3introI have a Paul Hynes SR1-5v arriving - so am convered on the wallwart repalcemnt front (My old Wellborne PSU died .. and I miss the regulated power and improvements that gave)... but I'm also considering opening up the Squeezebox and having a go at the 3.3v regulated supply ... do you guys think this is relatively easy to do given a) it's an SMD populated board b) I am an electronic numpty The final piccie showing the externally added one seems relatively simple! I'm also seriously considering getting inside the X-DAC V3 also for Sandy's V3 upgrade ... but again ... the worry is always the warnings about how thin the traces are!! Exactly how difficult can it be? The other option is to sell off some items that are surplus and hand over the SB3 to audiocom (any comment on their approach) and maybe even the MF X-DAC V3 (though I may stay with messing with that myself as I believe the audiconm upgrad eis above my prioce celing and think source improvement of the digtal out of the SB3 is the way to go for now at least) Audiocoms Squeezebox classic upgrades

The pcb track in these are not nice to work on, their very fragile and lift with just the smallest amount of heat so be extremely careful mate if attempting to do any mods. I maybe getting chance to try out Audiocoms latest clock soon in my Duet, if it ever happens I'll let you know what I think Sol if its good in the Duet it'll be good in the SB3 too. I'm still trying various mods so once happy I'll post some details , it won't be just yet though because of work

Excellent stuff Leo ... do post your impressions. The Audiocom clock is probably a step further than my pocket will go .. and I figure clean regulated power has to be the 1st point of call. That said .. I used a clock (and regulated power) from Audiocom in a CD63-KI Sig ... and it worked very well.

Hi Sol, Basically want to try as much stuff as possible to see what offers the best improvements One of the problems is that the XO and s/pdif shares a single hex inverter IC, separating these proved to be worthwhile so you could try disconnnecting the stock XO's and get something like a 4pin XO and supply with its own little reg and run the output of the XO directly to the Xilnx chip

Sol It can be quite difficult if you are inexperienced. It is a double sided PCB and it can be quite hard removing some components. I had a fair degree of difficulty just removing the Xtal oscillator module. You need stuff like Soderwick, a solder sucker, and a PCB drill with .6mm or .8mm drill bits to clear the solder from some holes after getting the component out. However, for people like Leo with the right gear it would be a snack. Leo could most likely do the full mods to a V3 in a couple of hours, IF he wasn't so tied up. Alex

TBH I wouldn't try and desolder the components out of the Squeezebox as is, the print is so crap it lifts just looking at it, I cut them out leaving the legs , then gently heat up the pads and quickly scrape off the solder and remaining legs with a bit of thin card

Why not sell the SB3 and buy a Touch? Far higher quality and its really nice having album covers displayed. Thats what I have done and I had a linear regulated supply for my SB3-not tried it with the Touch. Audiocom could mod the Touch at a later date if you think it needs it.

I am amazed that you have heard negative comments about the Touch dac-all the reviews I have read have been very positive. Personally I use the digital out to a dac and its clearly better than the SB3. I haven't tried the analogue out yet but will do when my dac goes off for a few more mods!

What I have heard is mostly speculation in early stages about the DAC being better in the SB3, and I haven´t given it much attention since then. I´d love you to be right, since I think that the SB3 is great and planning on getting a Touch as well. It will be interesting to hear about your (and others) thoughts on the analogue out.

Bjoern, apart from the sound quality issues the Touch is a lovely piece of kit to look at. Its well made and the colour screen makes it enjoyable to view album covers. These are displayed on stored music and also some radio stations like Radio Paradise. The software is fine at this stage (it ought to be given the time they took to get it right) but will get better especially as and when 3rd party programmes become available.
