Being utterly convinced about the marked superiority of the ripped audio files on my 32 GB Corsair Voyager GT USB 2.0 pen,
compared to normal CD playback, I decided to get a WD TV Live despite the 48KHZ limitations, and it using a SMPS 12V 1.5A plugpack.
I connected it into the SC DAC via Optical SPDIF and then into my normal lounge room system.
When I selected music, it just played all of the music files from their folders in some kind of order. e.g. "Fields of Gold" from 2 different artists,
in different folders, followed each other. It happily played the high res rips from Claire Martin, Fleetwood Mac,
and Carly Simon at a lower resolution than the file itself without missing a beat.
I had forgotten that the Class A preamp and 15W Class A had such a fabulous low end !
Both DVD players when playing the originals from CD, sound absolutely anemic in comparison !
WTF have normal players done to the bottom end
The low end from Andrea Zonn's "Better Be Home Soon" is awesome, just like is hinted at from the PC via headphones.
The WD TV Live, which also plays HDTV via HDMI isn't perfect, with a hint of lower level harshness on some material, but I will not be wasting too much time before throwing together a linear 12V 1.5A PSU.
I will also try a JLH with it.
I suspect that the supplied crappy SMPS is stopping it from sounding very special.
The unit I bought was the more expensive version with added features . ((AU$196 from Dick Smith)
