I have backups of a lot of my CDs at work. I burn the backups at 4x speed (10x if I'm in a hurry) Is this still good practice or am I just wasting my time due to technological advancements.

Ian Ian I prefer 4 x speed, which is often the lowest speed available, as it should give a greater precision burn, however some formulations these days are supposed to work better at higher speeds. The lowest speed you are permitted to burn at, is often dictated by the media itself these days. Alex

Get a blu-ray burner and use it? (to burn cds... dvds...) More likely to result in a better precision burn.

True but the copies I get at slow speed are good enough to use at work. I've resisted Blu Ray so far but it is tempting. I will probably cave in when I have some spare cash

If you really are into making backup CD copies, you might give a look at Yamaha's Audio Master Quality Recording capable drives. It is almost a decade "old" technology, but IMO it produces best "home made" audio backups without investing in professional equipment. It basically enlarges the "dips" and "grooves" of CD audio tracks so that they are read more easily and precisely at playback time (drawback: you sacrifice 5-10% of CD-R full capacity). Worth checking out. Beside that, you are wasting your time and earth's resources. Use flash sticks and lossless compression.

Better still, use flash sticks and NO compression. Sorry Valter, but I had to let you know that I still read your stuff most of the time .

Thanks Mike, I don't have problems it was more of an, is it still best practice to burn at slow speeds? kind of question. If clone CD is a freebie I wouldn't mind taking a look at it though. A download link would be fine. If it's commercial don't worry I have a couple of burning options.
cheers
Ian
PS Valter. I fully intend to get a 32GB USB stick and or a solid state HD when the prices drop and provided I have spare cash. I'm not one to load up the credit card.

I am to impatient for 4X so I do 8X speed. However most of my copies are to be used in the car so with all the road noise I do not feel the need for 4X speed.

For those who are interested after reading this thread I looked up ebay and picked up a Yamaha CRW3200UX, one of the earliest units using the audio master system (above). You cannot control the write speed, and I would quess it's 2x or there about, and you loose 15% of the CD. The drive was £10 (inc P&P), the improvment noticeable (just) and so overall it will now been used as my burner of choice.
