Yes I did notice SQ improvments after recabling, and fitting the metal rings, but they are still a little bright for me, hoping the filter sorts this problem out.

I have noticed a trend and it may go towards explaining why some members find the HD-681 "bright" and some don't...... The majority who find them bright are under 30 years old, most of those who find them ok are over 30 years old. It's no secret that our HF capabilities diminish the older we get so us "oldies" are obviously not as sensitive to the brightness as those of you with a younger pair of ears. Maybe a generalization as Frans is 48 (same age as me) and he found it necessary to filter the highs so I should maybe say those of you with more acute high frequency capabilities may find the highs a bit grating. My old ears are pretty much impervious to "ringing" these days after being exposed to many Hawkwind concerts with my head in the bass bin (believe me, fckin' LOUD!) so a pair of toppy headphones don't pose a problem Even though, I've ordered one of Fran's filters and, hopefully, my old ears will be able to detect any difference it makes even though it may be more "subtle" to my ears than a 20 year old's ears.

Looking good dean0 Thanks to Mick you've got a pretty unique pair of 'phones there and, if the filter sorts out the brightness, a bloody awesome sounding pair of 'phones too! Are you going to try the AKG velour pads? Yeh, I know they cost more than the 'phones themselves but it seems a shame to spoil the ship for a tuppence ha'penny worth of tar.

thanks, going to try the filter first, then i'll decide... where's the best place to buy the pads?

Anything ought to sound good to me then, at JUST the right side of 60, nothing wrong with my hearing, can hear a flea fart from 20 paces, although the Misses says im going deaf, when she asks me to do things around here ;D . Had an Ear test at the OPTICIANS,( yes i know that"s where you get your Eyes done), but my optician gave me one while i was waiting, i got a very high mark, Exceptional was the word he used, so i am happy that i hear every thing as i should Mike

Glad you like it Mick, it's just simple Evolution Pro shielded cable.... I used the drain wire as ground..... it's nice and flexible too, that starquad stuff is way too stiff for my liking.... as Rick says "KISS" (keep it simple stupid!)..... the 'phones are single entry and I LIKE single entry (less cable hanging about your neck) so no real point in making them dual entry as far as I'm concerned... what you gain on the swings you lose on the roundabouts.... it's always a matter of compromise and "usability" comes before the last miniscule "nth" of performance in my book..... of course, in an ideal world you would connect the headphones directly to the output of the amp and sit the headphone amp on your head but..... in the real world, things have got to be "user friendly" ;D

I've always been very sensitive with HF so have to be careful especially with things which tend be sharp in the highs Its no fun tbh and makes you much more picky Anyway this is a good thread and makes for an interesting read

I second Mike's approval of Mick's latest metalwork. The quality is fantastic and to my delight I do hear a definite 'tightening' of the sound. Worthwhile mod. I'm just the 'wrong' side of 60 but thank goodness I can still hear a fair bit of treble so I found the 681s a bit too bright until Frans' filter mods. I'm now waiting to hear what magic he works on 650s! A big thank you to Mick, these 'phones really look the part now. I'll try a classy 'night reflections' shot. Syd

Hi Guys, I'm a newbie here (and rather aged) so be gentle with me ;D. I joined as a result of being put in touch with Puffin - hi Rob - who was kind enough to recommend the HD681 'phones to me. I've got a pair and am well impressed with them - excellent product and excellent value. I'm well past the 30 year watershed so I have not noticed any sibilance . I would be interested in squeezing a bit more out of them, I have hot-glued a £1 coin to each driver housing and already have a filter box being made for me. I have no real experience of soldering but would be interested in fitting the metal rings if any are still available. If anyone was prepared to hold my hand (so to speak) over the web, and point me in the direction of where I can get the necessary bits from, I would be willing to have a crack at re-cabling them, if you think it is a job for an inexperienced amateur. Thanks for any (polite) responses. Cheers, DaveK

Hi Jerry, That's a bloody charmin' welcome that is - and I thought you were a friend of mine - it's all lies anyway , I've only been thrown off one so ner ner ner, and I'm proud of that. Tweedledum and Tweedledee are better left to their own devices IMHO so that they've only got themselves to fall out with. The way things are going at the moment there'll only be them left soon :'(s . Anyone who is impervious to the bullying and pontificating that goes on there deserves to be locked in a small room with them for a fortnight, IMHO, seeing as how you started slinging the insults about, so there!!! Take no notice of him chaps, he was a mate of mine once . Cheers, DaveK.

Thanks for the welcome - interesting if you are a student of psychotic behaviour, paranoia and megalomania - no prizes for guessing which joint though ;D Cheers, Dave. Still none the wiser Take my advice and stay that way. Enough people here will recognise it from the brief information I have provided but if you don't it's better that you stay that way - you might be tempted to go and have a look for yourself and I wouldn't want to be responsible for inflicting that on anyone . Cheers, Dave.
