interesting if you are a student of psychotic behaviour, paranoia and megalomania - no prizes for guessing which joint though That describes a certain "joint" I know (especially the "Megalomania" reference) but I'm sure it's not the one you are referring to (and, no, it's NOT Head-Fi) I won't mention the one I'm on about suffice to say it's quite disturbing witnessing a grown man who believes he is the new Messiah ;D

Hi Davek, please let us know the forum, we can get popcorn and go watch welcome to the grotto, too! Hi Will, Thanks for the welcome. I'm a newbie to forums but it seems to be a generally accepted rule that one forum doesn't slag off another so ...... I joined one forum after leaving ........ , and posted that I was a refugee from there, only to followed by the co-owner (already a member there, one of the few fora from where he hadn't previously been banned), who promptly began slagging me off, together with the Mod on that forum for accepting me as a member. It went quiet for a while and then he began again, resulting in him getting banned from there. About the only audio forum he can now post on is his own, where he seems to account for 1 in every 4 posts on there, IMHO. And he seems to be driven to have the last post on just about every thread - I can only assume that it's his way of convincing himself that his view prevails on every discussion. Now can we change the subject please? Cheers, Dave.

Hi Davek, please let us know the forum, we can get popcorn and go watch welcome to the grotto, too! Go and "watch"? I want to join! It sounds like a barrel load of fun I miss ripping the shit out of people with sarcasm and wit.... the only disadvantage of running a forum, you've got to get on with everybody

Have you noticed how resonant the the metal headband hoops are on the Superlux 681s? While wearing them just pluck the hoops and listen.
I did a rough-and-ready recording; put on the 'phones, held a mic hard against the earcup centrally on the red-rimmed Superlux badge and plucked the headband metalwork.
Recording the sound into Audacity and a quick analysis showed the resonance to be sharply defined at c.64Hz with a second harmonic about -20dB relative to this, and the third at -24bB.
Adding few blobs of Blu-Tack lowered the fundamental resonance to around 40Hz and shortened the ringing, but it was much harder to excite and was around 7dB lower than before (hard to pluck with exactly the same force). The second harmonic was hard to spot. The nature of the new resonance will depend on mass of the Blu-tack, number of blobs and positioning of course.
So how does it sound with Blu-Tack blobs? Better, I think. What would look better than Blue-Tack, and maybe look better too? I am sure I have seen some sort of dampers applied to violin strings.

I am keen to get the bits to build my own 681 filter but won't be going near maplin for a while (should order on-line I 'spose) so I have just tried out the effect using the Foobar 2000 equaliser; it has a slider at 7kHz. Dropping this down a few dB makes a subtle difference - takes a bit of shine and shimmer of the top end - yes, more natural I'd say.

I have now replaced the cable and think its a worthwhile improvement for very little money. Combined with the filter it takes the HD681's to another level. Has anyone tried damping material inside the cans and if so is it effective?

My HD681 now have a filter, and I can say it is a massive improvment. The piercing treble is gone, the sound is very simular to the HD650, but lacks the detail and soundstage. More impressions later...

I am a hhuge fan of passive "nudges" to make a system do as it should with the caveots :
1-Can't over do it or you change thr very nature of the device and if so and you like it then the device was never for you anyway
2-Gotta watch those level/phase/matching data or you end up with more problems than you correct
Just my $1 toss in,no big

I do not make ANY profit on parts, assembled filters or postage ! Why not? you don't have a red cross tattooed on your forehead do you? Why shouldn't you make a few quid Frans? We don't expect you to provide these filters for "free" mate.... if they do the job I have NO problems at all with you making a profit, your time is valuable and nobody expects you to work for free. Mike.

I agree, but im guessing he feels much the same as me on this Mike, its a Forum which all members contribute in some way or another, i am no good with electronics, but my engineering know how, allows me to put something back in to this Forum, which other wise, i could not. Along with the banter, humour, and indeed friends i have made on here in a relatively short time, well worth my time and effort i feel.

As a beneficiary or promised beneficiary of such gestures from all of the last three posters can I express my appreciation. I can't contribute much in the sense that you three guys contribute, but I do (or did) know a bit about metallurgy and steel foundry work, so if there's anyone out there that can use a bit of such a background, I await your call . Seriously thanks guys - it really is much appreciated, particularly as I'm so new here with no track record (hopefully other forum track records don't count here? ;D ;D ). Best Regards,

Well..
In my opinion the HD681 is THE best cheap headphone there is. Mind you.. I am not saying it is THE best headphone. It has the best VALUE I have ever seen.
I don't mind making profit either but since this is about the cheapest headphone there is with THIS quality (and like Rick said it just needs the right nudge) I think the can MUST remain cheap in order to keep it the best value. This would not be the case if I were to charge 100 Euro's pounds or $'s for it.
I think: when you change the pads for the velours AKG ones and mod the damn thing with the filter and be it with or without changing cables and very nice metalic rings etc. it still has the best value there is.
We should keep it that way.. a great can with which you can enjoy the world of high-end for a fraction of the price AND have plenty of money left so you can buy other things like amps, CD's, players e.t.c.
For me it's just the fun of tweaking things and really like the freeware thought (like Ubuntu e.t.c.)

My philosophy in a nutshell BUT, once you go from making "one" to "one thousand" of anything you have to consider your time and have to make it viable or else you'll just be running about like a headless chicken going nowhere ;D
