Also a bit of me wants to hang on to it 'cos it is a special headphone for me too. (Much like yourself) I took the DT150 with me and the Solo. Side by side ......... The V8 mids are lush and the BASSSSSSS. Clean fat bass. Loved it. I wasn't so keen on the usb bit but won't use that any way. Booked an appointment with this guy who got a bit annoyed with me not buying it after the demo but hey .... I'm trying not to spend cash if poss because I have gear to get rid of which would pay for it. The V8 sounds so sweet that I sort of focussed on that after I put out the message here about the value of a V2. I would have settled for a V2 if I had known you'd wanted a straight swap but now I've actually been able to hear a V8 ........ It is seriously goodIan

Yeh.... the V2 is a bloody nice sounding amp Ian Quite a few people actually prefer it over the V8 saying it's a more intimate, musical listen.... I agree. One thing the V8 does have is BALLS! I had one on loan for a few weeks and just loved the way it totally "took a grip" of the headphones and grabbed them by the balls... very nice I've fitted 6H23P valves into a couple of them and both owners have reported "amazing" improvements in SQ so there's something you can consider at a later date. Unlike the Solo, the V8 is (to a degree) user customisable.... you can fit different valves for a different sonic flavour or you can go full out and fit an amazing device called a Little Pinkie I won't blow my trumpet but, believe me, if you like the V8 "as is" then a V8 with Russians and a Pinkie will blow your pants off..... basically "more" of everything in spadeloads. Hope you like your new amp Ian

Ok Mike.
Had big thinks and discussion with a guy who has heard one of your V2's. He LOVED it.
If you still want a 250 II I'll do a trade. It's a difficult decision 'cos I am attached to them!!
If you've cooled off, no worries.
I've decided that I could easily live with V2 and V8 in the same house.
BTW Mike - is there a good UK supplier of the V8?

Ian Hi Ian, I'm happy to go with that but it will be a couple of weeks before I can get around to modding one of the V2's, I've got a bit of a backlog to clear through. Most of the the MF dealers are pretty good and very few of them slash prices, it's mostly "RRP" with the V8 I'm afraid.... you may be lucky and get a few quid off if you shop around. Mike.

Thanks for that. I'll have my last two weeks with them and my new Yello CD. I've got it!!!! As far as V8 goes, I've found a guy who will knock a few quid off but as you say, not a lot. Still, I'm looking forward to going back to tubes!!! Just let me know when you're ready. The guy who tried one of your V2's that I spoke to was amazed at the quality of sound from such a cheap amp. He offered to buy it from the guy who lent it to him, but he wouldn't sell it. Ian

He offered to buy it from the guy who lent it to him, but he wouldn't sell it. Ian OK Ian, that's a goer... I'll fit brand new special reserve Russians in the V2 and, of course, go the full monty with the mod stick too... I think you'll be quite surprised when you do a side by side with the V8 Does the trumpet still distort on your CD? There is no hint of distortion on my CD but, then again, I could be going totally deaf after years of intense headphone listening The next biggie on the calender, for me, is the release of the New Shpongle album in November, it promises to be a headphone spectacular! After three groundbreaking albums over the course of a decade, the internationally acclaimed electronica project Shpongle has returned from what fans feared was the end of the project when Nothing Lasts…but Nothing is Lost, their third album, was released. Not prepared to leave us hanging, electronic music pioneers Simon Posford and Raja Ram have continued to push the envelope and break boundaries to create yet another sonic masterpiece: the much-awaited fourth Shpongle album, Ineffable Mysteries from Shpongleland.
There are languages here that Shpongle fans will know and love as much as their previous work, and yet there are some massive leaps forward in terms of production techniques, sonic trickery, structure, and direction compared to all of the previous outings to date. With influences drawn from anywhere from Steve Reich and Mike Oldfield to the Batman movies and beyond, this really is another over the top record in terms of production skills, tonal textures, and original ideas from Shpongle. It is rich in detail and emotion, in worldly and otherworldly samples and inspiration, and in harmonic and melodic construction.
Ineffable Mysteries from Shpongleland opens with the massive Electroplasm, a rapidfire ascent into eastern scales and rich harmonic textures, underscored with a strongly pronounced rhythmic foundation. They dial in a different mode with Shpongolese Spoken Here, which transitions from glitchy breaks to four-on-the-floor mayhem before settling into a more laid-back but bouncy number. Nothing is Something Worth Doing is a grounded yet floaty work featuring a sophisticated tonal and harmonic palette, six-and-a-half minutes of timelessness before fading into the long-awaited Ineffable Mysteries. With original atmospheric and vocal samples from India, this tracks simple beginnings lead to a strong rhythmic drive and incredible sonic manipulations blending Raja Rams flute, Indian vocals, and synthesized creations.
That journey is followed by another - I Am You moves through shifting sands of time and sound, from its mysterious beginning through its central love song inspired by a special muse, evolving into a rhythmic and sonic tapestry of phenomenal complexity. Invisible Man In A Fluorescent Suit opens with a mournful cello solo that expands in true Shpongolian fashion into a celebratory melodic blend of synthesized and organic instrumentation before fading into the next track. No Turn Un-Stoned is cut from a different cloth, with a broodier opening that morphs into shimmering effects and soulful vocals floating over crisply defined rhythmic elements.
The final track is a multi-faceted jewel in the crown of this glowing album: Backwards Through The Cosmic Mirror features a grounded four-on-the-floor rhythm that supports forward-moving harmonic and sonic explorations with as many twists and turns as the previous tracks, eventually fading into the floating sea of soundlessness from which its brilliance arose.
Shpongle continues to evolve and inspire, as their sold-out gigs worldwide have demonstrated. The anticipation for this album is such that their launch party at the Roundhouse in London this October sold out and a second night had to be added. The demand for this album is expected to be in proportion to the uniqueness of its content. The CD booklet was designed by Storm Thorgerson, who created the classic record sleeve for Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon and other timeless releases, making the entire package a consistent creative tour de force. Unique in their sound, structure, and style, Shpongle is at the forefront of the music of our generation.

There is no hint of distortion on my CD but, then again, I could be going totally deaf after years of intense headphone listening The next biggie on the calender, for me, is the release of the New Shpongle album in November, it promises to be a headphone spectacular! More here: www.twistedmusic.com/Mike, the trumpet is clean as a whistle on CD. However, it has been recorded exceedlingly loud so either the mp3 compression Facks it up or the output from the poxy ipod just can't cope with the load. I have come across this before on the Ipod - the line out is fine but when it comes to loud stuff (Especially bass) the output can distort which is a great pity. The Ipod amp is a bit shite. On the same track at the very start though, there are noise issues where the strings sounds and anything sustained comes in. It almost sounds like a noise gate wooshing in and out with the sound. However, my set up is a bit analytical so that's probably why I'm so aware of these types of things. Two albums I really like are 'Tales of the Inexpressible' and 'Nothing Lasts .. nothing lost'. That's the thing about hi-fi stuff - we all focus on the last nuance of detail and forget the music!! I guess you probably know the Ozric Tentacles? I'm very lucky in that I haven't gone deaf in spite of my job. I wear earplugs. Always have because of the problems of hearing damage. Thanks for going to all the trouble of doctoring the V2. It's REALLY appreciated Mike. From what I heard from one of my engineers, your work is stunning. MF should be paying you a consultance wage!! When I told him about the V2, he instantly mentioned a Pinkie mod. Really grateful. Shall I come up and sing into your ears sweetly? It's funny 'cos I've read this site for quite a long time and never really squeaked up much. Kept very low. But thanks to reading this place, I've ended up getting a V2 and V8 (In the end) so my headphone set up will hopefully take a kick start up the ladder from the past few years. I really like valve sound and am looking forward to my conversion. Ian
