So, as it says, how many can play or regularly play a musical instrument,as apposed to just listening via your HiFi /cans? And I'm not talking about pink oboes here !

There is a better joke in that but I will leave it alone (has the words "flute" and "skin" and opposite sex but i will play nice) Instruments piss me off because I am most likely the least talented person on the planet earth.I not only admire those who can play, and that is ANYTHING even a pair of fkn' spoons, but to be honest am jealous of them as well. took guitar lessons, piano lessons, tried out drums-all a friggin' disaster ! Plus I sing like someone is strangling a cat so my only shot at being part of the "party" when I was young was learning how to set up the band and keep things running during Biker Bashes where spilling beer on the amps or into the stage monitors was the norm as would be the occasional overdrunk female falling into the amp stack during the wet tee shirt contest. My reputations as a "high as f**k drunk" that could keep the band humming along meant I never missed a party or an event when I was young and single (many after marriage also but just not the same not being able to pick a date from the "candy store" that is a pig roast/battle of the bands/wet T contest/biker bash ;D ) I still build some shit for local players and still can't play any instrument ever conceived in the minds of even the most twisted human living at the edge of sanity making "tunes' with sticks and pices of rock I hate and admire them all

Bass guitar, "regular" guitar, clarinet, keyboards, drums (if they count!). I'm making my own bass guitar at the moment, and I've made my own speaker cabinets and effects pedals in the past too. I have several orders for guitars from my friends to complete after this one, but I still don't know how well it is going to play when it is finished. I know the LED dot markers are a bit tacky, but I'm treating this as an experimental showpiece. The body will have a 5A burr/flamed maple cap over it, the same as the headstock.

I'm with you on this Rick. I've been interested in music since my early teens and I like absolutely all sorts, rock, pop, classical, punk, dance, you name it, I'll give it a go. So it was with a sense of utter frustration that I discoverd that I have a complete lack of aptitude and absolutely no talent when it comes to actually making music.

Low B. And it's a 950mm(37.4") scale length, so it's 10% bigger than a regular bass guitar too. Should sound fantastic, even if it plays like a plank.

37.4" scale............So will you be able to get a finger per fret down by the nut ?.If so, you must have hands like an ape ! Why stop with a low B why not get some fat strings and tune her down to a F#...!!
Are the LED's going to flash, or is it to tell you where to put your left hand !

It's definitely going to be a stretch, but I do have very long arms and big hands - that's why I thought I'd build something big to take advatage of the extra length of string - that low B is going to be gut-wrenching.
I have seen a bass guitar that was tuned C# F# B E, where the "top" E is the same as the bottom E on a regular four string bass, and a company called Warrior make several 7, 8 and 9-string basses with low F#s.
The LEDs are going to be static - they are literally position markers for use on dark stages. There is going to be an on/off switch too, so I can be subtle if I want to. If you look carefully, you can see light coming out of the edge of the fretboard at the twelfth fret - I fitted thin perspex rod into holes leading from the side of the fresnel LED caps, so both the front and side markers use the same LED.
I feel I'm hijacking this thread somewhat - I should have put this in the "So what else have you made" thread instead and linked to it. Sorry.

I think "strictly on topic" and "dark side of the moon' likely do not belong in the same sentence so post away dude BTW-If I COULD play an instrument it would be a sax and that is without a second thought.A well played sax hits me below the belt and I think rock music in particular has gotten away from a meld of instruments from all musical fields and has become very boring. where are the horn sections ? the second drummer ? The analog keyboards ? the fkn harmonicas ? And where are musicuans that actually know how to play their own instruments before getting a recording contract ? I admire those who can play but NOT those who have no talent or the discipline to improve on their skill level yet are being put forth as the second coming. modern rock music sucks a big one and why I mostly have moved on to blues and free form jazz to hear true viruosity

I used to play with a band or two, but that was 15 years ago. These days it's just in the living room pretending to be someone else. Me, I've got three basses,a '73 Fender Precision,a Cort Fretless and a cheap and chearful Aria Jazz copy.....I like them all, but trying to play the fretless along to music I find hard.As typical with fretlesses with flatwound strings there is little attack, but the notes do swell afterwards...................

Brass band at school where I played solo trumpet. After school the trumpet went out of the window and I was onto drums and played with a bunch of what I considered at the time "old men" who played some mean guitar. The group was called "lost property" and they were never found. So I went from pretty strict military marches and Christmas carols to hanging out with 4 pot smoking hippies who played guitar with their false teeth (seriously) Don't play much these days but would love to get hold of a secondhand theremin and master it. Sad thing is, the older I get the only "band" I'd probably get into is the Salvation Army Band... oh well, any music is better than no music and Salvation Army Band + "theramin" would be pretty way out

Theremins are fantastic. You can pick up the Big Briar (Moog) ones in kit form for about £350 new, which is quite a lot. I wonder if they'd benefit from Panasonic FMs? I was lucky enough to watch Sebastian Tellier supporting Air while I was at university, and he was being accompanied by Pamelia Kurstin on a big Theremin with some serious range on it (I think the specs say about 7 octaves - same as a piano). Very impressive instruments - the sine-wave sub-bass sound is fantastic, but I can imagine playing them accurately would be quite hard unless you've got a really good sense of pitch. Harder than fretless bass anyway, lol.

I had a go on one many years ago and made a right old noise with it, when questioned as to my level of skill I replied "avant garde" and that was with a straight face ;D

Talking of musicians, have any of you heard Anthony Michaelson play the clarinet? I got a free CD a while ago along with the MF newsletter and he's extremely good indeed..... I'm not really a classical "lover" but absolutely love the clarinet, specially in a bix beiderbecke style.
Anyways, just wondered if any of you got the same CD sent to you?

Argh! It's gone all dark!
I didn't receive said CD. Even though i play Clarinet, I originally wanted to learn the Oboe instead because I think it sounds much nicer. The cheapest Oboes seem to be twice the price of a cheap Clarinet, which was the main reason for my final choice. If I had the money, I'd learn the Cor Anglais (English Horn) - even nicer than the Oboe in my opinion, but I haven't found one cheaper than £1800 so far.
More drummer jokes!
What's the difference between a drummer and a drum machine? About 6 bars by the end of the song.
What do drummers use as a contraceptive? Their personality.

Mike can probably give you as many stars as he likes though if you want the quick route!

Rick
Have you tried out Warren Hayes - Solo Acoustic? This is serious blues from rock genius. The album was recorded at Atomie Studios, New Jersey on 26 June 1997 and can be difficult to find. Its a rare gem.
Also try his 'Live at Bonnaroo' CD recorded by ATO records in 2004 - catalogue number GEL 4081.
