X-Can v2 PSU problem (weird)

Hello.
My X-can v2 is behaving strangely. The left channel is very quiet, but when I pull the mains plug from the wall it starts working properly (with the juice left in the capacitors). As soon as I plug it back in again the left channel goes quiet. (I have replaced the transformer with a 40VA toroidal one).
This does not make sense to me. Can anyone help?
