Id forgotten just how good these little X-10D line buffers were and coupled to an X-Can v2 they are just fantastic and add a real sense of "weight" to the proceedings, it's almost as if a pair of floorstanders were playing "as well as" your headphones.... everything is improved from bass response to soundstage to scale to.... well "everything!"
I know these are only meant to be used with pretty crap CD players but, for some reason, they totally enhance the X-Can v2... whether it's because there's some more "valve" flavour introduced inline god only knows, one thing's for certain though the X-10D really opens the V2 up and lets it sing.
Anyone else here who rates the X-10D?

Ohh Yess (Churchill dog) Ol Blue Eyes! Nice! Looks like you are running the stock Jamicon caps puffin? Well worth your while changing them for some low ESR types and also increasing the coupling caps from 2.2uF to 4.7uF.... I'll upload more details tomorrow if I can get my computer up and running. Mike.

I have the X10V3 kitted out which sits between the DAC and Amp .. and without I always feel like something is missing! Weight seems about right Mike ... add some gravitas to the prcoeedings!

Puffin, PM me with your details and I will send you the latest revision to the kit... it basically comprises 2 x 4.7uF film caps which replace the 2 x 2.2uF and 4 x 470nF film caps which replace the 4 x 220nF caps... these tweaks REALLY open the X-10D up!

Yup "weight" and "scale" being the two words I'd use Sol.... it's as if you are introducing some meat onto the bones when you insert the X-10D into the path.... it may not be "technically" correct (ie: one more device in the chain) but it sure as hell improves things sonically, well.... to my ears anyway.... (and yours by the sound of it!)

Mike If that was a sly dig at my editing elsewhere, the links were for an online pharmacy, cheap watches etc. Normally I would have banned the poster outright, and most likely, so would you. Alex

Has anyone tried the x-10d with an x-can v3? I have thought about getting the x10 d to try with it but not sure it it was worth it?

Yes, I have tried... at the moment I'm using my X-10D together with my X-Can V3. Both the X-Can V3 and X-10D are unmodded at the moment. I use vintage 60's Philips E88CC SQ (special quality) valves with the X-Can V3 and JAN Philips ECG 6922 with the X-10D. To my ears, it's a clear enhancement in sound quality. The X-10D really adds some "weight".

I have been burning the X10-D that Mike modded for me a weeks back. I was very pleased with the weight, depth, and overall thickness it was adding to my X-Can V2 also modded by Mike. Today I finally replaced all tubes w/ NOS Sylvania 6922 I got from Mike. What a freaking difference! I am awestruck and very happy. Mike, do you have any more of these tubes? I would like to buy a few more.

Just a quick question -
Is the X-10D just plugged in between CD analogue out and headphone amp? ie is it just a buffer or a matching device?

Ian Ian It would be helpful if people said which version they were using. From what I can see there appear to be 3 versions. One is valve only, whereas the 3 is turbocharged by using good old output transistors to give it more clout. i.e. a lower output impedance. Obviously, there is going to be quite a difference in performance between various versions. Alex

But I presume it just fits between analogue out from CD to analogue in of headphone amp? (Not digital out?)
Therefore it's some kind of buffer/matching device?

However the degree of buffering will depend upon which version. Some people just used the original version to get a valve type sound. Alex

So you don't actually need a digital out from the CD player to connect one in ... and different versions give different flavours!! Sounds a good idea for cheaper CD players. I wonder how much it can do for a higher quality player. Obviously, Miguel reckons it. Maybe worth investigating next for me then. I presume that the CD player sees an 'ideal' output resistance in the X-10D and it in turn, delivers an 'ideal' output into the amp? (Whatever that is) Thanks Alex. I've wondered for some time, but too scared to ask in case y'all think I'm daft or something!! Ian

A decent modern CD player that doesn't have valves in it, does NOT need a buffer to drive the next stage properly. Alex

I had one of the early versions. I thought it worked great with my CD player at the time but as soon as I bought a better player it quickly became surplus to requirements.
