Solid aluminium enclosure, cheaper than the ABS type I use for the Little Pinkie, benefits include enhanced EMI / RFI rejection..... bullet proof, built like a brick shithouse.... question is...... would you give it house room? Downsides..... it takes longer to put together, it weighs more and it's not exactly the prettiest power supply on the block. The two bolts on the top hold the transformer in place (inverse mounted) so, again, don't do anything for the overall appearance. It's possible to polish the aluminium with 1200 grade wet / dry paper and finish off with some Brasso wadding but, again, very time consuming...... Anyways, back to the original question...... do looks matter? Would you be happy with something like this in your system knowing that it sounds fantastic or do looks play just as important a part?

Mike,
forget brasso go and find a product called Autosol it is the ducks nuts for polishing alloys, copper and brass, likely find it in the Auto Accessories type stores.
As for the bolts perhaps a pair of small cup head bolts would mean having a square whole for them to seat into but would look the part on top.
The other option might be powder coating which opens the possibility of a wide variety of colours.

I would be happy enough with one of those Mike... it kinda has an industrial vibe about it The EMI/RFI shielding would be a nice bonus as you say and it looks practically indestructible. I can't hear "looks" so to me they don't matter... but this is coming from someone who like to cut holes in the top of stuff

Ditto to all the above. If being sold as a commercial unit, it is too basic looking as is.
You could even use that metalised/vinyl wrap to create your favourite WOOD look ;D

Well if my recently recieved Pinkie looked like that, I would sand the hell out of it and spaypaint it in a cool colour...Probally matt black Is it possible to use other screws for mounting the transformers so that you can get it flush with the surface..But Robert already has a solution for that. I do not know how much cheaper it would get, but I rather spend 10 £ extra for the black one that I have. Also if it takes more time to make the difference in £ would probally be eaten up by your skyhigh salery.. ;D So for me looks do matter, not that it is apparant when I look in a mirror.... However I do like the fact that it is bullet proof a lot of my PSUs have been destroyed be stray bullets........................ Also the shielding is a nice thing to have. Oh and Autosol is a really great product for polishing just about everything, even electrical bikes.

Glue? I certainly would not rely on glue to hold a transformer in place Miguel... these things weigh 800grams and have to be BOLTED on......
I bolt the transformer down with locking washers and then fire some hot melt glue over the nut to ensure integrity.... that's the only time I'd use glue.

Why not use lockblots instead ?? that would be so much easier..
An epoxy glue is much stronger than bolts, so do not fear that it will not hold the 800 grams, a couple of weeks ago I saw a "handyman" putting glue on his shoes and then hoisted himself up until he was hanging upside down

i want to shag it. looks great to me.
and it depends on your market. if selling to the in the know crowd it couldn't matter less. if not, then yes.
i want to see one like you sent me, but with that switch and with a british flag wrapped around the whole thing with "pinkie" on the side in those fancy/elegant looking letters.

An epoxy glue is much stronger than bolts Utter hogwash...... epoxy resin is NO WAY stronger than a nut and bolt! shear strengths are nowhere near that of an M4 nut and bolt.... Epoxy is good for a lot of things but I certainly wouldn't rely on it to mount a transformer, one heavy knock and it could shear.....

I'm not exactly the right person to be answering because its known I don't give a toss if it was housed in a biscuit tin or sandwich box performance is more important. I do actually like it in metal, infact ignoring the lack of paint it looks very nicely built, you could maybe offer it sprayed or left as is for the user to spray what what colour he/she wants. Nice thing with metal is that it gives you more options, polished or sprayed

Pinky,
Does looks matter ?
Yes, it does ! There maybe some people who may like this "industrial" design but you will probably never find out how many potential customers you lost because of this unfinished product.
My suggestion to you is to find a way to give it a nice look. It doesn't have to be a beauty, but it has to be decent looking, in black or silver, providing the finish that will leave no doubts to customers about your ability to provide a complete solution.
I hope you don't mind my suggestions ...
Cheers ...

Certainly looks matter, but give me the aluminium enclosure over an ABs one anyday, ABS looks sh*t. By the time I would have finished with the Al it would be ok for me, it might not be perfect but would do and be better than in its raw state. Surely offering an option is the way to go.

Hell..... I'm not going to be selling these, I was simply using the Pinkie in the alu box as an example of something that doesn't look too hot but delivers the goods...... I'll continue making them in the tried and tested Evatron enclosures.
