Well, I'm still usng the XP with much happiness and with the coming of Windows 7, I am wondering whether to change to Vista to finally make a computer audio server for myself using an old Pentium 3 800 Mhz Intel board. I have not been following the Vista review so all comments will be welcomed, good or bad. Yes, please direct your answers towards computer audio intention as a server. Thanks for the info.

XTRProf Will Vista work with an old clunker like that ? My understanding is also that it really needs 1GB (or more) of RAM to function properly. Like many other people, I have a legit copy of Vista, but will keep using XP until Windows 7 arrives, then install Vista purely for upgradeability reasons. You will not be able to ugrade directly from XP to Windows 7

XTRProf: The only way you'd get away (and even then, I think you'd be pushing it) with an 800mhz machine, would be if you used vlite, and customised the install dvd so that it only included the bare essentials. It could probably be done, but whether the end result would be particularly usable is anyone's guess.
Alex: I wouldn't bother with Vista at all....
7 is supposedly vista with less bs, and a redone taskbar... I'll let you know when I've had a chance to play with it...

Hi all, Thanks for all the feedback. Then maybe I will stick with Window XP as it's JD is just for streaming purely computer audio all over the house and nothing else. Maybe this old folk board still can make it with Vista or Window 7 with bare minimum installation of the Window for the purpose. Spirit let me know after you have tried W7. From what I know, Vista has some issues on computer audio like downsampling and upsampling when it is not supposed to when output to an external dac.

I'm using the latest build of W7 and it's a big improvement over Vista. It works better on lower end hardware, and really flies on high-end hardware (I'm running an i7 + SSD, which I never find myself waiting for!).
Having said that, I generally stream over the network (nowadays mainly to a Transporter) rather than directly attaching a DAC. The only directly connected hardware I have is an Asus U1, which I just use occasionally for casual headphone listening whilst at my PC. The U1 has drivers specifically designed to work around Vista's issues (e.g. you have to manually specify the # of channels in the source), so it works well with W7 too.

I've heard similar things Jeremy, but to be fair, anything would fly on an i7 + SSD... ;D

I've heard similar things Jeremy, but to be fair, anything would fly on an i7 + SSD... ;D This recent change to the exchange rate was a blessing in disguise - it gave me an excuse to bring forward all my planned gadget purchases for the year, in order to get the old exchange prices! That's why I bought the new PC recently, amongst other things. The SSD is a particular bonus for compiling code - it's chopped that time down by more than half.

yes expensive but fast as my poor beast pales though I've been thinking of upgrading putting a couple of gig as a RAM drive makes a good scratch disk

putting a couple of gig as a RAM drive makes a good scratch disk I know you're kidding... but that's actually pretty much what we do on our servers. However, the RAM has battery power, plus it's own power supply (with UPS), using these nifty things: www.curtisswrightcommercial.com/Umem%20NVRAM/

The question is.. How fast does a pc need to be to stream a sound file? Either out through a sound card spdif or over a network?
no really that fast.
I use Vista 64, spdif, through a Azuentech X-Prelude card. Just switch off all the processing parts,,,,,,,,,,,,

Even still, 800mhz would be pushing it, using a stock vista setup, just because of all the unecessary crap they have turned on/installed by default... Point taken though.... it could most probably be done Vista 64 => X-Meridian ;D Using analogue via a metal can 4562, until I save up for and build a buffalo 32S...

First report of W7 RC.... Fast. Very fast. At least as fast as XP fast. Also very pretty. Clean.
Will report back when I've had it installed for more than 24 hours, but initial impression is very good. Haven't come across anything that doesn't work yet.
