Still rockin' through the night...
Good ole Led Zep, for me IV and In Through The Out Door are the faves;

It's a glorious sunny day but quiet, as most people are on the beachfront for the festival of San Juan.
So I've had Creedance belting out most of this afternoon and am now pondering my next toonz, maybe some vintage Santana...

Another old favourite band...Talk Talk "It's My Life" Still one of my favourite bands Chris, I only wish I'd got to see them live. Especially when I watch the 'Live in Montreux' gig!! I think because of the way they dressed at the time, plus the sound of their first album, they were dismissed by a lot as "New Romantics", when in actual fact they were becoming a truly innovative (and in the end quite avante-garde) band. They went on to produce genuinely creative albums, full of depth, meaning and layers. Albums that have stood the test of time. Anyhoo, at the moment I'm listening to Yello's album "Pocket Universe". Didn't really get into it at first but I'm loving it now. The vocal cadences on this track - " On Track" - definitely have echoes of "Bostich" For any Yello fans here is the full "Touch" concert -

Gone back yet further, the first three albums by Yes played end to end. It's been a very long time since I listened to these i.e. decades! Hello old friends

Another album I had on vinyl back in (I think) '78 or '79. Ashra Blackouts. A Dutch bloke (I think) multi-instrumentalist type guy like Mike Oldfield. I remember I only bought it because it was in the bargain bin and it cost exactly how much I had left out of my pocket money. Plus I thought the cover looked interesting. C'mon, who didn't buy an album because of the cover Anyway, took it home, put it on, and didn't know what to make of it. Was it Jazz? Was it electronic? Was it rock? Decided I didn't know what it was , so I put it away. Couple of months later . . . after a few refreshments and some exotic cigarettes, put on headphones, cue'd this up - and - bingo!! Thinking back on it now, I'm quite amazed that I was listening to - and loving - stuff like this (Vangelis, Ashra, Oldfield, J.M.J.) at the same time as The Jam, Sex Pistols, The Clash, Purple, Zep, Sabbath, the mighty Quo, anything by Beethoven, Chopin or Sibelius, The Whispers, S.O.S. Band, Rose Royce, Chic, Free, Floyd, Abba, The Eagles, Miles Davis, Coltrane, Mingus, Steely Dan, Eric Clapton, John Lee Hooker, Son House. Obviously there are loads more that I can't remember at the moment.
And not forgetting the Master of them all, Robert Johnson.I'll repeat that - I was listening to all of these bands (and was lucky enough to see many of them) at the same time. I'll bet a lot of you were too
And - honestly - I wasn't "that strange kid that listens to weird bands", - there was a gang of us , must have been about 7 or 8 who all swapped albums (vinyl) and taped stuff from each other. It's how we were exposed to new music. Or maybe the 70's/80's were a unique "crossover point" where we had pop, rock, jazz, punk, disco, and blues all represented by well-respected, credible bands??
In this day and age of the dominance of r'n'b and hip-hop,(and the f*cking X-Factor) I'm not sure youngsters are exposed to such a variety of musical styles at such a young age as probably most of us were.

I remember I only bought it because it was in the bargain bin and it cost exactly how much I had left out of my pocket money. Plus I thought the cover looked interesting. C'mon, who didn't buy an album because of the cover I can relate to that! One success and one misreable failure Back in the early 70s, and on a low junior Civil Service salary, full-priced rock albums were too dear for me as a newly married man with amortgage. But there were a few good budget 'classical' labels. I saw Shostakovich's 10th Symphony on Classics For Pleasure and I spent the One Pound whatever and took the chance. For whatever reason I loved the cover. And I had discovered Shostakovich! The failure? I must have had more money than sense when I bought 'The Alchemist' by 'Home' Fabulous cover, I thought, which I cannot scan, because I gave the LP to one of my brothers... who had hi-fi but few records to play on it. Totally pretentious twaddle. Well performed, but dull, dull , dull. Derek

Oh yes! Money and cover were sometimes the only deciders for me too.
Here's one winner, liking saxophone and classic cars how could I resist, he was unknown to me at the time.

I've been listening to bit of Tool of late and thought I'd try out the side project of Puscifer. Don't be put off by the daft album names, there is quality stuff in here that would be very difficult to pigeon-hole. Interestingly different.

There are now many music videos also available in high resolution MP4 (up to 1080) If they are on Youtube they can be downloaded for future use, or making a compilation video, by inserting "ss" between "www." and the next character in the video's URL, then entering again. This will also give you the choice of resolution you want to save the video in. The industry's site VEVO which has 100s of music videos won't however work this way. However, you can then search for the title using Google to find the Youtube URL then use the "ss" I am able to DL tracks like "Katy Perry-ROAR," convert it to .mpeg , save it to USB memory stick then plug it in to my Samsung 40" TV to play through my main system for the grandkids.. Some TVs may even play MP4 directly, but I haven't tried it with mine. You won't need to do any format conversions to play via your PC monitor though. Regards Alex www.vevo.com/videos

B.O.C. (Blue Oyster Cult). Their very first album which has pretty poor recording quality apart from a couple of quieter tracks. Anyhoosen, this was one I only have on vinyl and didn't fancy digitising all 10 albums in my possession! So, I DL'd a Flac of it and crikey, it sounds significantly better (from a remaster). I then downloaded the entire discography and the same was true for several more albums.
That's it then, one box set for me please Mssrs. Amazon and then I can make some even better digi-files!

Chris, if you get chance get hold of Sting's new CD - The Last Ship (PM me if you want me to DB you it?). I have been listening to it today and by the time I had got to about the 8th track I could see myself liking it more and more, definitely one that will grow and grow on me. My favourite up to now - Dead man's boots Sting explaining about the album which is basically about shipbuilders in Newcastle. Full album:

Hi Chris,
I did have a listen on youtube but Sting kinda misses the mark for me, thanks for pointing it out though and the offer. I did note his voice sounded more natural than previous offerings, less forced?
I've been taking in some Creed tonight
The singer, Scott Stapp, reminds me a little bit of Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam.

It arrived today, hooraaah! I paid €58 on Amazon.es including carriage (it was £55 with free domestic post in the uk) for the 16 CDs and one DVD plus booklets and download access to 4 more live albums. Stunning value methinks I noticed that after my order the UK price went down £52 and Spanish price went up to €65 plus post Does one order have that much influence on pricing? There'll some ripping going on soon...

Darkwater from Sweden.
"Progressive metal" apparently.
A bit of old and new mixed in together here but seems to work so far, still listening...
