Nostalgia is about to end before turning to newer stuffs ............. Now some Aussie lingo: Played the 45 rpm extended single vinyl version to bring down the house at high volume. Couldn't resist although my parents' disgrunted voices were equally at the same volume. What the heck, please them back to sanity volume after this. Huh......., CD seemed so plain in comparison ...............

Perhaps you need to do more work on your CD player/ DAC ? BTW, Altronics has the complete kit for the SC DAC, which after modifications EASILY outperforms a fully modded X-DAC V3

He sold his new CD/SACD/DVD-A Esoteric then and plays only vinyl now. I had missed the chance to buy over his Esoteric and all his audiophile CDs and SACDs, man, as he didn't tell me he was selling away the Esoteric! Wasted ......... Btw, have you assembled a Sabre Dac yet? Have you compare the SC Dac to it? Your opinions? Thanks.

Chong. No, and I have no intentions of putting together a Sabre (Buffalo DAC. ) They are far too expensive for me these days. They are not true DIY in the sense that the modules using SMD are already assembled and not readily modifiable. They also require some seriously expensive aftermarket regulators to get anywhere near the best out of them, and in many cases have up to 3 separate power transformers as well. The modified SC DAC only needs a 15-0-15VAC 30VA toroidal transformer. A modified SC DAC should come fairly close to their performance, but at a fraction of the price. My SC DAC clearly outperforms a friend's Benchmark USB DAC that has been modified, e.g. in the replacement of it's SM NE5532 with SM LM4562 etc.
Of course if I had plenty of spare cash I could always purchase several Paul Hynes regulators to further improve it's performance, or even buy a Buffalo to see if it is as good as all the claims . Alex

Alex Oh, the Benchmark is about the same as the MF X-Dac V3 in sonic when we had a pow-wow some time back. I'm not surprised when you say your SC Dac outperformed the Benchmark when it had already outperformed the MF. I dunno, but the way to move forward is the Sabre Dac. Btw, why all of them are using the Paul Hynes regulators? Isn't the Dexa or TentLabs super regulators about the same? What's the advantage of shunt over series super regulators? Your opinions again. Thanks. Sorry folks for the OT here ............ I will get back to the main topic after this last post. I promise!

Btw, have you assembled a Sabre Dac yet? Have you compare the SC Dac to it? Your opinions? Thanks. Watch this space... Within the next two weeks I imagine. Due to differences between SC DACs constructed by various members, the results will be as variable as pitting a couple of Buffalo DACs against each other, where the individual constructor has employed his own PSU variations etc. . I imagine that Jeff's SC DAC would also be more competitive if he was to use the high performance (and expensive) Paul Hynes voltage regulators.

Chong The Paul Hynes voltage regulators are priced well above what I can afford these days, so I can only go by all the reports I have read about them. They are the "Rolls Royce"of voltage regulators, and not only do they ensure a very low output impedance over a far wider frequency range than normal regulators can, they have exceptional HF performance due to their use of very high slew rate devices.(Current feedback opamps ?) Paul Hynes also has a range of plugin series regulators which are only fractionally lower in performance. Alex
P.S. Apologies for being off topic.

BOT Something I've only recently discovered, the kids were playing it... Chris, Plan B is not my normal listen, but he does do a good tune, very listen-able. His earlier release was quite good as well.

I quite agree Will, several good tunes there but also many that fall way outside of my range of listening.
