Help a headphone novice?

I'd like to preface this by saying that I despise most everything that Bose makes. The last Bose product that I was happy with was a set of 901's I owned many years ago.
Anyway, I own a pair of Bose QuietComfort noise canceling headphones that I inherited from my father when he passed away last year. I have a love hate relationship with them. I love how they drown out the sound of a jet engine, but I HATE the sound quality. These are the original first series quietcomfort, not the newer, "more refined", 2nd or 3rd series. These things are just terrible. They are okay in the mid range, which is to be expected, but their base response is just horrid. They are not so great on the top end either. Boomy, inaccurate base (and I swear I can hear something rattling in the right dome!). The highs are tinny and distorted at high volume. The only good thing that I can say about them is that the sound is admittedly "clean", which I suppose can be contributed to their noise isolation/canceling properties. NOTE: My source is mostly 200+ kbps audio files, so the quality going in is decent.
I went to look up reviews about the QuietComforts, and to compare them with a set that I'm thinking about purchasing (AH-D5000). The reviews are ALWAYS positive! I can't find a single negative review by a customer or "professional". Everyone seems to think that the sound quality is great, granted the reviews I've found are for the newer, "better" versions. Is this accurate? Is there anyone here that actually likes the sound that these things put out?
I guess my question is this:
I want to invest in a nice set of headphones for home and travel. I don't care about size or how bulky they are. I have considered the HD650's and the K701's, but I decided against them since I will be often be using them in public places (especially airplanes) and I don't want to disturb those around me. Hence I have decided on a closed dome set, the AH-D5000's. If I lay down the $4xx to buy a set of AH-D5000 and portable amp, am I going to be blown away by them.... so much more so than, say, the Quietcomfort 2 or 3's, that I can justify spending the extra money?
Is there a HUGE difference in the sound reproduction of the AH-D5000 over the Bose models? On a scale of 1-10, with apple earbuds representing 1, and AH-D5000's representing 10, where would you rank the noise canceling Bose headphones? I have a sneaking suspicion about the types of answers that I will get in response to these questions, but I would like some confirmation.
Thanks,
Mike
And if anyone can suggest a better option than the AH-D5000's for my particular intended uses, please feel free to comment on that as well!
