Hi all, Is this a nice dac to connect my lappy preferably via USB to my fully modded X-can v3 with pinky and AKG K701? Or is there something that gives more bang for the buck? I'm running the same setup as yours to a pair od Denon D7000's thru the v-dac via spdif optical from the laptop and I am totally satisfied. Got real good bang for the buck using that setup.

At www.hobo.nl/ The listed price isn't correct I ordered mine at hifi studio city (wich is part of hobo hifi) in Enschede. I called them and asked for the price and it now is 225 euro instead of 295 euro as stated on their webpage.

I guess they lowered the price since everybody was buying them in the UK (as I did)

Picked it up this morning and listening to it right now. The first impression I now have is very good. Still have to figure out how to set up asio4all though. for those interested I couldn't resist the temptation of pulling it apart to see what's inside.

A good thread on head-fi for setting up asio4all if not aware of already.

The special power supplies that he is using may be worth even more than the DAC! I did see mention in the thread of the designs not being kosher to share as they were top secret and awesome I don't like to willy wave I now listen to things I've never bothered with before, even Jazz I've never heard cymbals sound this good with digital before and it loves complex busy music which is something a lot of other digital sources struggle with. Of course the music is most important but its nice to have top bollock SQ to match The problem is the Buffalo only gets you partly there, regulation in this case played a big part in the performance

Can schematically trace how MF put in the USB to interface with the dac chip so that I can try to have one fixed for my X-Dac V3 as well? I guess all X-Dac V3 owners, especially Alex, will also be interested. Thanks for any info ............

Nothing special about that, its easy to wire a USB codec chip to any dac It probably goes through the asynchronous resampling chip before it goes to the dac Look at the type of codec chip used and study the datasheet, all the info needed will be there

XtrProf Wrong! As far as I am concerned, USB audio is an inferior format. Alex

Alex Yes, you are right this time round insitu as usually the usb is connected to an inferior dac chip for most USB dacs nowadays. But that will improve with time. However, connecting to the computer using an external dac thru the USB or SPDIF rca is still the best for computer audio, right, unless we can stream wirelessly to a Logitech Squeezebox or Transporter (as well as afford it)?

XTRProf Wrong again! The 1st sentence is partly correct though.SPDIF or a more recent opto receiver is preferable. You already know about upgrading opto receivers, having done it yourself in the X-DAC V3 Logitech Squeezebox and Transporter are far from perfect. The Power supplies in the SB need a lot of work to give good results. Note that I said "good" NOT "great" results. I love the look and facilities of the Transporter, but it's performance doesn't quite match it's great looks. Nevertheless, many people love them, and forgive the mediocre performance, because of the undoubted convenience factor. This is despite the comments made by it's designer some time back on the official website, who seemed to think that the technical performance is near perfect, and can not be noticeably improved upon. I think he may have gone to the same University as the designer of the Musical Fidelity products, who is also disparaging about claims made of ways to improve the performance of his products. To him, valves of the same type number ,from different manufacturers, that are in good condition, and meet specifications, all sound the same. SandyK

Heres a large pic of the V-dac (click on pic to enlarge) this was found on another forum, it shows the chips in more detail, the codec used in the V-dac is PCM2706 img227.imageshack.us/img227/7307/vdac1ht8.jpgMajority of USB codecs are limited to 16/48k , some of the latest ones are capable of 24/192k
