I've read a few reports about the ipone 3G being not too good for audio...... I disagree! For what is essentially a "home entertainment centre in your pocket" it's bloody good!
I've paired the iphone up with the KOSS portapro and it really is a match made in heaven.... of course, it's not the most revealing of listens but it certainly is warm, welcoming and pretty musical.... that typical "please all / offend nobody" type presentation which some call "warm"...... yup I'd go with that
Is it "Hi-Fi"? well, that depends on what you class as being "Hi-Fi"..... if, to you, it means sounding good and musical then, yes, the sound that comes out of the iphone could be classed as such. If you expect to hear the recording engineer scratch his bollocks then, no, the iphone would not pass as Hi-Fi.
Maybe I've just found the perfect combination in the iphone / KOSS Porta Pro but I really can't understand these reports that the iphone isn't up to much sonically..... the bass digs deep, the mids are nice and flowing and the treble has just the right amount of presence to keep everything nicely balanced... no one component sticks out, all gels nicely into a musically satisfying, chocolaty, syrupy whole.... very acceptable of you like your presentation slightly warm and laid back.
