Sort of got distracted by heating boilers dying, washing machine packing up & a roof leak but I've now got my priorities straight and am concentrating on the important things in life. I hear you man! I've been distracted by a beautiful lady, can't stop thinking about her, so much so I have been super glueing my fingers together, forgetting to check DC offset, fitting capacitors the wrong way round and generally making an arse of myself Now I got to try all those chips all over again..... fun though and I'll use any excuse to repeatedly go "under the hood". Half the fun of this game is making mistakes anyway.... it would be oh so boring if there wasn't the occasional explosion..... I've always wanted to fit 100 x 10,000uF caps the wrong way round and stand back and switch on "POW!" fantastic stuff! I always meant to do more with this place www.audiogeddon.com/ but haven't had the time to wreck any equipment recently..... maybe, now the weather's better, I'll make a video of a "controlled" reversed capacitor explosion or what about chainsawing through a CD player? Any ideas or contributions most welcome..... I'll upload them to Audiogeddon Rick doesn't call me the buffer slayer for nothing you know

If anyone is interested in Altronics shipping (someone was asking). This is what I got for shipping to the USA, via e-mail with them.
Airmail 1kg- $25au Airmail 2kg- $45au Airmail 3kg- $55au EMS 1kg- $55au plus $15 for every additional kilo.
Pretty steep for USD. AUD and USD are almost the same. Minimum order of $100AUD.
Kind of sucky as some of the power amp kits look interesting (studio 350 weighs in at 1.65kg per channel...includes heatsink).

Unless we can arrange a group buy from Altronics, Alex's PCB artwork may be the only way forward for obtaining the kits. - I got this from Jaycar this morning... Since I'll be 'tooled up' for etching some PCB's by lunchtime (although If I end up making more than a couple of boards I might buy a drill stand), I'll have a go at a HA & PSU boards & see how they come out. Then It'll be a case of sourcing the components. I'll look at the kit as is until Mike comes up with an upgrade list. The other alternative is if anyone else wants a complete set of HA, PSU & JLH I could order up enough to reach Altronic's minimum international order value (3 kits I think). One advantage of doing that is the HA & PSU will have screen printed PCB's so assembling is a lot easier. Either way the unit cost of a complete kit is going to rise but from what Mike & Alex are saying they'll still be good value.

Dave I got another set from Altronics in Sydney this morning. This won't affect any orders, as the orders come from Altronics head office in Perth W.A. A U.K. group buy may be worthwhile. Last resort is PCB only from RCS Radio, but a more expensive route, and they aren't screen printed, but large colour prints should help there. Allan and yourself have done extra touches to the mini JLH, and if we can make sure that holes drilled are slightly larger for PCB pins/ terminal strips and power type transistors, I will talk to Bob Barnes at RCS Radio to see if they are possible to make from this artwork. BTW, a fully modded prototype will shortly arrive in the U.K. (if Paul can find room in his luggage!) Mike may get to see if there are any real advantages compared to what he has already accomplished with his mods. I just hope he doesn't think it sounds like crap ! Alex

Cheers Alex, I think two SCHA/PSU kits and shipping works out at GBP61. If I order more than 4 the unit costs drops a couple of $au. Shipping is per kilo so there should be an advantage in ordering a few kits at a time (until we exhaust Altronics stocks .) All in all I reckon I could keep the cost of both kits & UK postage under 35GBP, which still looks good value! I certainly don't think I could etch both boards & source components for much less than that. I can see me being thrown out of the study and into the garden shed the way this thread is going . Ah well - summers coming .

Dave The boards from RCS Radio are AU$9.50 and AU$21 . Just the boards ! Although they do make more to order. Alex
P.S. I have sent a possible simpler design for dual reg PSU. Slight tweaking needed to artwork.

Etching............. My laser printer - an aged but normally reliable HP Laserjet 5M - does not like press 'n' peel 2 sheets trashed, 8 to go. I can see the permanant marker coming in handy in a minute. Still - the night is young

canjunkie At least you have a Laserjet printer! I havbe to use the transparency and photo sensitive method, because I have an IJ printer. My latest printer doesn't seem to be able to print quite the same dense blacks as the previous one, though. My last transparency also needed minor touchup. SandyK

Sorted, just put a few sheets of paper underneath the press 'n' peel in the sheet feeder and it works fine! I take your point Alex, all that photodeveloper, UV lamp business sounds a bit fiddly for impatient old me ;D Or should that read Clumsy Bugger? Now, it is 11.20pm a little too late to start the jigsaw up perhaps Or do I nick one of the First She Lord's tupperware type thingies to use instead of the piddly little thing that came the Maplin 'Beginners' kit. Got to be careful here. The study looks like a 'light industrial area' according to the lady of the house. Might look at fixing that roof on the shed Now where's the kettle. Tea & etching solution brewing time

MERTON I think you will have to wait until Mike gets his mitts on a JLH. I have a feeling, that this will open a new series of opamp investigations by Mike. Unfortunately , Jaycar has now stopped producing the basic kits, and I just hope that Altronics doesn't do the same. I would suggest that anybody interested tries to arrange a minimum order with other members, while Altronics still has stocks of the basic kits. See reply 253 by Canjunkie. SandyK

mrarroyo, I see you're in the US, like I am. I don't know of anyone else in this country. I'm not sure 2 international shipments (to UK and then to US) is cost effective. I am currently planning to etch my own or use a breadboard (need to etch JLH either way), but if there are enough buyers in the US, I will join in as well. canjunkie, try magazine paper (paper from a color magazine) or non-waterproof photo paper. I'm not sure how much press n peel costs, but the magazine is more or less available anywhere. Got a GF? Tear up her Vanity Fair or Elle.
