Hi! This moment my setup looks like this: Flacs -> Asio -> Emu 0404 PCI -> Some cheap 3m cordial rca-cable -> MF x-can v3 (fully modded + little pinkie, stock tubes) -> HD-650 (stock cable). I have been pretty happy with it, I like the neutral sound of 650s with the stock tubes. But I have been thinking of buying a better dac like bencmark dac-1. What kind of improvement I should be expecting with dac-1 compared to emu or is the system even capable of bringing the full capacity of it? Of course I have very bad interconnects but im going to replace them very soon.

Sould be a major step forward if you choose a fairly high quality 2-3 meter length spdif cable to lessen cable reflections. The Benchmark is not only a damn fine DAc but not too shabby as a system "preamplifier.headphone amp" either

I can't comment on the rest of the components used, but my sound card uses the same dac as the 0404 (assuming it was bought after jan or so '06), and guys who've heard both my card, and the dac-1 prefer the x-meridian.
If you can audition, I definitely would.

Yes, don't forget the new Cambridge dac which is really giving the MF V-Dac a run for the money. So far I didn't see much favourable reviews about the V-Dac in the usual suspect hifi mags when compared with the Cambridge. There is a thread on this Cambridge thingy here though. Also, if you can diy, do consider the cheap dac as used by Leo in the diy section. If I'm not wrong, that can be had for about USD70 at ebay.
