Rob, I've never seen a phase plug like the one you have there in this design. Looks remarkably like an R80 reflector bulb I searched da net but only found more pics of yours. Could expand on or link to what goes on there? (or is it just a reading lamp ;D ) Chris ps Xerxes, a puffin don't need no tweeta!

Sorry guys, not been here for a few days. There is a tweeter there for all to see. I buggered my hearing running a mobile disco for years and so need more HF. They are Mark Audio, really good for £18 a pair. They go to 30,000 kHz.
A prize goes to the gent with the soiled trousers, yes the phase plugs are indeed spot bulbs. I thought I would try something similar to the Beauhorn plugs. No they don't light up.

Me well mine Heybrook Heystacks are getting on now but still give a good sound I reckon. Wanted the 'Castle Severns II' at the time of buying but they were out my price range.....Typically two weeks after I bought them I wandered into a shop that had a pair of said Castles ex-demo for the same as I had paid for the Heybrooks and persuaded my mate to buy them, he never did regret my advice...The bugger

Syd Hi Syd, Yes they are quiet superb, i have had many speakers in my sitting room and have yet to find a pr that betters these, here is a review showing them on their stands hifishack.com/sfsignum.php if i get a minute today i will post some photo`s of them. I move them back from the wall about 18 inches for serious listening sessions, which is no mean feat as they weigh in at 156 Lbs each on their stands. Mick.

Klipsch Reference 5 Usually seen in home theatre set-ups, but i love them for audio use only. 99db sensitivity can rattle the windows with a modest 15W amp.

I've always loved the look of the SFs. Certainly no slouches sonically too!
I bagged a set of Naim SBLs a wee while ago (ugly buggers, but correctly executed are fab IMHO), just need some beefier amplification to make them sing...

They look wonderful - I have never managed to hear anything by Sonus Faber but I bet they are really good. Hi-Fi News usually like SF designs don't they? Derek p.s. always fancied the 'Toys' for some reason. Beautifully finished.

Hi Derek,
Well i`m happy with them, never felt the need to change, and yes, to my ears the SQ does match the build quality.
To be honest they don`t get used that much now for serious listening, wife uses them more for the radio, probably 95% of my music comes through HP`s now, 5yrs ago it was the other way round.
I have not heard any of their latest offerings, but would expect them to sound superb, along with most of the top brands high-end products.
Mick.

Some nice speakers here guys, I've build some weird projects from age 15 just wanted to experiment with things I found at the local junkyard. best finds were electronic organs; they always had a big 15 or 12 inch speaker inside with which I used to make subwoofers from. I knew nothing about the existing of crossovers and my budget was about 5 euro pocketmoney a week that I earned with doing repairs for people in the neighbourhood. Current speakers; modded Klipchs La Scala's. I own this set for more than 20 years now, and after a love-hate relation soundwise I ended up modding them. They're here to stay defenately now since I have heard no other system yet that produces this life-like sound. Mind you; the stock La Scala's already do so, but with too much distortion due to older units and a very poor crossover. The ZEN tube amp produces two very detailed watts, which is more than enough to enjoy full orcestral work at a frightening loud level with a breathtaking sense of "beeing there|". I've learned a lot, reading about these speakers on the "klipschforum" and used some of their findings to upgrade mine. I fell in love with them after hearing a recording of a drum set played over them....for a big sound you simply need big speakers. High sensitivity speakers combined with tube gear is THE THING for me! farm7.staticflickr.com/6072/6038502284_fa6210d19d_m.jpgp.s; love the "phase plug" Rob ;D and Mike....after reading your post about what crazy things you did to get that "perfect sound" ....I realized I'm not alone getting all crazy by minuscule details sometimes. Now I only have to stop those thinking-patterns somehow.

I've heard the EL84 triode wired (but not the Zen amp) and it sounds superb and easily able to drive those horns stupidly loud. in the past I've done the same trick with 45se and OB speakers. interesting set up you have there. take care

Wireless World design circa late seventies, still going strong. Hi Alan, I've heard a couple of different sets of these made by mates back in the 1980's. There was a variant with a super tweeter. And on the B139 bass driver, I still have my first HiFi speakers which were kit Kef Concerto's made by mate Rob, the originator of Eichmann bullet plugs etc, back in the mid 1970's. Kept for no particular reason and almost turfed them last week in a curb-side clean-up, B110 midrange surrounds stuffed, tweeters in poor shape, crossovers buggered too, but as I used to love those Kef B139 bass units, I couldn't part with them just yet. In the Concerto's and in transmision lines like your speakers, they generate teriffic impact. So.... good old drivers in good old designs, and nice to see someone still using them. What I've been playing with......... DIY VH-EPS DML Panels... never heard any, but I guess they sound like a dipole open baffle line source with minimal lobing, near field heaven, far field heaven too cheers.. jeffc

B139 and B110 where used in the isobaric (doubled up). If only i had room for yours.mmmmmmmmmmmm have you any specs for them. take care

Nope No crossover Frequency response ? no super low bass or substantial bass slam and, for the time being, a HF response purposely tilted upwardly to accentuate micro-details Impedance ? Nominal 4.5 ohm with 4 x exciters wired parallel x series x parallel, but with 3 x piezo tweeter cones connected in parallel between these, and with panel fundamental resonances unknown, it could be higher and probably look like a porcupine’s back versus frequency Sensitivity ? unknown and "very weird", but guessing in the mid-90’s. Difficulty in measuring this accurately from what I’ve read about DML panels, but lets say it gets me into trouble when I think I’m playing at a reasonable level but apparently NOT from what I'm told Other parameters ? TBH with a single panel this large resonating chaotically to make sound, I’m not sure what speaker driver parameters are of any relevance. Currently building H-frames for 4 x Eminence Alpha 15A woofers to add dipole LF below 200Hz. Lucky I have space and even more lucky to have a very tolerant wife. cheers.. jeffc
