My current collection is: For main use... Spendor LS3/5A + MJ Acoustics Ref 100 sub (Spendors re-housed in Doug Stirling rosewood cabinets). Office desk monitors: JR149 Extras: 1. Magneplanar SMGa 2. Acoustic Energy AE109 3. Home made mini towers: Audax 25mm HF + Audax 100mm paper bass/mid... 10 litre boxes with ports tuned to c45Hz. Crossovers.. guesswork and selected from junk box. As later posts under my new user name showed, I moved on from the LS3/5As (sold to a fellow 'beeb' enthusiast) with my purchase of the excellent Spendor S3/5Rs which I continue to be amazed at. The Spendor puts music first; they treat music with respect and place accurate instrumental and vocal timbre above the more 'exciting' attributes that can be dialed in by a designer who has to put the showroom wow response above accuracy. I am in no way tired of or disappointed with the tiny S3/5Rs... I just want MORE of what Spendor can offer; the same responsible approach to loudspeaker voicing but with greater bass extension and ability to play a bit louder. So..... I have ordered a pair of A5s.... should arrive within a couple of weeks. www.spendoraudio.com/HTML/A5_main.htmlRegards, Derek

Wow, you are obviously the Spendor God here! Hmm, my current speakers are more or less the same size as your new A5 so it will still need a sub.

Wow, you are obviously the Spendor God here! Hmm, my current speakers are more or less the same size as your new A5 so it will still need a sub. I won't know about that until I set them up in my particular room. But I'm hoping that they are voiced with enough bass to get by sans sub. In-room the A5s are likely to be flat to 40Hz or so and I have read good things from other users about how big and full-range they sound. If I do find a sub is needed then I'd have to consider a replacement as as i do not think my MJ Acoustics Ref 100 is up to giving the low enough re-inforcement needed). But I cannot afford any more kit. So I'll either have to find the A5s sufficient on their own or send the A5s back - I have this choice if I need it. I can't afford to keep spending on my hi-fi. I am now trying to settle on a good quality mid-fi system that will last as long as my hearing does. I'm not after top end, but I do want an overall competence and freedom from major limitations. This is my retirement system we're talking about... it can be improved upon naturally but I'd have to spend a HUGE sum to gain significantly in terms of SQ. So as it stands I'll have a hard-drive based music library with my Denon DVD2900 for movies and surround sound (I may keep my S3/5Rs for the rear channels), the Squeezebox Touch as renderer, X-DAXCv3 > passive 'pre' > MF A3.2cr power amp > Spendor A5s. There is, of course, my X-CANv3, Grado SR60s et al. As well as the LS3/5A 'clone' based office system, Sony / Control One bedroom system, Cambridge / Denon / AE 109 dining room system That should see me out I reckon. Derek

For now a quick desktop set up is all I can manage thus: PC- Fiio E10 - M-Audio BX5
I do intend to find a more versatile sound card/usb sample rate converter.

Speakers like Derek's should be ideal for most situations. You could also consider Transmission Line type speakers for their typical extended LF response. In the real world though, where SWMBO more often than not insists on less obtrusive speakers, you may need to use a subwoofer disguised as a coffee table to keep the domestic peace. Alex

Does CD, DVD, DVDA and SACD (with no conversion to PCM). Derek

Spendor A5s arrived and installed yesterday..... Sounding good already. Derek My local Hi -Fi dealer friend had a pr of these Spenders on demo when i popped over to listen to the Beyer T50`s last weekend, they are indeed very impressive, enjoyed listening to a few tracks of Shpongle`s Ineffable Mysteries very much. Very nice speakers, enjoy. Mick.

I have these (in a different color) in my home office: Easy to build and sound wonderful. Very good bass extension when near the wall and properly damped. These are in my listening room (albeit with a granite cabinet now):

I have a pair of the original PMC OB1s.
I don't tend to turn them up all that high, which is lucky, because if I do the room starts to join in!!

I needed a pair of better speakers for my man cave, to live on the desk. I'm currently using a cheapy mini system, but the 'sounders' were a bit lacking. They were replaced with a pair of Acoustic Energy Compact Ones www.acoustic-energy.co.uk/Default.aspx?pagename=Acoustic-Energy-Compact-1-Loudspeaker in piano gloss black, which I picked up from Richer Sounds for £79. They are a nice little (150x220x200) speaker which sit happily in the corners of the desk, without sounding boomy at all. Voices on Radio 4 are clear, without any chestiness, but bass is there when needed. When driven at proper listening levels it's quite a big sound for such a small speaker, with the drum at the start of 'Another one bites the dust' being felt as well as heard. Very nice little speaker!

Oh, the wonderful Scanspeak ring tweeter. Should be very smooth sounding, right? How much you bought that Scanspeak?

Indeed, found the bass a bit tighter and deeper and the overall sound less muffled. The differences were not huge but subtle. The kit allowed me to do two sets of speakers. Oh, some Auralex not so subtle like this demo ............... Can hear very obviously ................ Maybe it has to do with the size and sound magnitude of the speakers.

These are my B & W CDM 7-NT's Because the tweeter didn't fire at my ear level when sitting in my listening chair I built a couple of home made plinths to lift them to the required height. The plinths are just kitchen worktops cut to size and painted to try to blend in with the carpet colour. This shot shows the woven pattern in the Kevlar mid They have a lovely clarity and speed about them yet can really shift air when big bass notes come in.

I have DM601 S2, since i live in a flat i haven't bothered to upgrade. I'm now at a point where the kit feeding these speakers is getting silly. the term weak link couldn't be more appropriate. However, in their defense every minor upgrade or tweak to my system is audible. I'm always surprised at how good they can sound with ever better and better kit supplying them. I'm wondering if well made and designed norm priced loudspeakers are not that far off the 'real fancy' stuff. Or if i hook up a set of 801's then my mind will be blown? I love the bass on mine, the bass on yours must be formidable. Great speakers.
