Insomniac Some interesting links there. BTW, maximum speeds notwithstanding, I get great results with my Pioneer DVR 111D and DVR 212 (SATA) drives when burning Kodak Gold Preservation CD-R (24K Gold) at 4 x speed, despite the maximum rating of 52 X. The results are audibly superior to the original CD, with an improved soundstage as well. Too expensive to use with anything but your best quality compilations etc. though! SandyK Those Kodak Gold are expensive as you mention, and quite difficult to find. I once picked up a batch of Gold Photo archival CD-R for a good price...normally used for digital photos but these worked very well for audio also.

Ignore post 48, i was writing stuff and went to post and I think the site went down or something. All's I got was a white blank page, then couldn't get back in. just looking at it, only part of what I posted made it through. A right pain in the ass when that happens. Try using windows notepad or wordpad to type your stuff, then copy and paste it into the rock grotto message box when finished. That way if the site goes down or anything, you won't have to retype it all again.

Insomniac I get the odd Archival Kodak CD from Woolworth's Supermarkets. The robbing b's have jacked the price up to $5.99 each a while back. Losing your stuff is often expiry of your login time. If this happens you can often recover by using the "back" arrow, highlight your message, and do a Control :C. Then log in again, go back to where you were, before, and reply with your saved material using Control:V SandyK

@sandyk What I find most useful for burning.... is Burrrn. Easily the best audio cd burning app I've seen, and you can select pretty well whatever speed you want. (Had a check for <4x, and there's 1,2,4,6 etc) www.burrrn.net/?page_id=4 = burn page www.burrrn.net/download/burrrn_package.exe = burn direct link As for quality of the xonar... I'm using an Auzentech X-Meridian, which uses the same cmedia 8788 chipset, and a slightly different dac I think. I've swapped out my opamps for LM4562s, and jumpered some of the caps. Sounds very good =P.

Just to add my 2p...
I'm using an auzentech x-fi prelude, sounds good to me (once you've disabled all the processing crap) the front L/R opamp is socketed and comes with an LM4562 (the rest are soldered in soic chips, I think) also supports optical and spdif out of the box with no pissing about.
However... I'd probably avoid the prelude unless you play a lot of games, but auzen's build quality is up there with the best, decent solid hardware, decent drivers.

spirit and kittenyberk Thanks for the added information. The Asus card does use an LM4562 for L and R too. I am quite happy with my X-FI card at the moment,as I have fitted an OPA2134 to replace the original 4560 (?) but I would like to upgrade to the Asus card a little down the track. SandyK

@sandyk I'd be happy to lend you my xm for a week or so if you wanted to do a comparison. Happy to even pay postage one way (I'm in Brissie)

spirit Thanks for the offer, but from memory, that card is still based on the Creative X-Fi series, and my X-Fi is already performing considerably better than originally, with the opamp upgrade. The Asus card has superior performance in many other technical specifications, and would also appear to be a better candidate for upgrading. Not that the technical specs tell all the picture!

You say 'that card' assuming I have a prelude?
I have an X-Meridian... Same chipset as the Xonar etc etc.

Spirit Yes, I did jump to the conclusion that it could not do 24/192. as the other only does up to 24/96 recording. However, this soundcard ceased production in June 2007, due to chipset availability. SandyK

Hi, everyone.
I've tested the PCI version of this card, the D2/PM, and it uses Burr-Brown PCM1796 DACs and Burr-Brown OPA237 opamps on all seven channels. I couldn't be more thrilled with the quality of the D2 card -- it stomps my X-Fi Fatal1ty ("douchebag edition") XtremeGamer card flat in transparency and openness. The D2X is simply a D2 card with a PCI-E bridge chip that allows the CMI8788 (designed for PCI only) to communicate across the PCI-E bus. I listen on Beyerdynamic DT770 (2005 edition) headphones, and I especially like the way the Xonar D2 card provides enough voltage on its analog outputs to drive the 250-ohm DT770s to borderline-unsafe levels.
