It may be time to cut these threads out and provide an individual sub-forum for the topic since it is no secret this is the way of the future AND is a big part of the present we need to not just discuss but discuss in detail how best to get there with as little pain and as much SQ as we can achieve Anyhoo.Came across this and thought it very cool for the unintiated or even the semi-knowing as a one stop shopping list of the basics involved www.thewelltemperedcomputer.com/do click the sidebar links for topic expansion Rick Out

I agree. I would also like to see more information on extracting higher audio performance directly from the PC, as I have found that PC audio from a HDD (.wav files extracted using E.A.C.) appears to be able to outperform all but perhaps the most expensive stand alone CD player/DAC combinations, especially if the dreaded Microsoft Mixer is bypassed.

I need to bypass the Kmixer ... Yeah you do if you want to even attempt bit perfect audio streams ; You need to have an audio driver that supports kernel streaming or ASIO and an application that can use those types of audio interfaces and that means an external PCM DAC or USB DAC (or external soundcard ) A couple of possibilities are KS plugin or ASIO with Winamp,ASIO4ALL with Foobar 2000

i'm kind of partial to this guy in a stand alone srver 6moons.com/audioreviews/mcintosh/ms300.htmlBut is bit pricey. The requiremnents being what they are the advanced "hobbyist" can do better for much less. Not an easy thing but do-able Plug 'N Play is a nice touch but unless you likie tossing money out the window if it is within your capabilities a "Roll Your Own" version is the smarter path. A mini ITX that can do both Audio and Video firmly planted on the AV rack seems to me to be the the way of the future and a thing that will make all other digital sources obsolete within the next half decade

You need to store .wav files ! I am not going through the nigthmare again. First I encoded my CC's (1500+) at 128, then I reburnt them at 192 VBR, I just did a third in Apple Lossless and I will stop there. The rest of my CD's will get done one here and another there w/ the new ones done in Apple Lossless as well. I am very close to pulling the trigger on an iMac. ;D Miquel, you won't be sorry! Unlike "high end hi fi", The Macs are not cosmetic for cosmetics sake. What that really means you will discover in the first couple of days of use.

I have heard good report of a Mac mini put into service with an external HDD as a music server. A S/H one of these is not too expensive. The person reporting this subsequently sold off his NAD CD542 player as he felt the mini was outperforming it by a significant margin.
