For a while I had been using Songbird as the front end for SHOUTcast (and as sorta-kinda a minibrowser ) but since both Pandora and Rhapsody come free from my ISP (Comcast Cable) I find the Bluebird icon on my desktop is rarely ever used even though I like the GUI far more than the latter two.
My thoughts on the royalty issue are that I understand both sides
Side A,the RIAA and Artists-Simply put they want to get paid for service.I personally know many working musicians who not being "superstars" means "don't give up the day job" (and in fact I work with a world class drummer who is lucky to pay for his sticks when he does a gig even though he can flat out blow those making much more right off the stage head to head)
Side B,the internet Radio Listener-Those that pay a yearly fee should not have that fee be draconian or they will likely drop the service. If enough drop the service then the service itself can not survive or if it does will be a bare bones operation that loses money.*
If you look at the other "Radio" model there is the advertiser supported FREE AM and FM and there is the no commercial subscriber supported digital radio such as XM Radio.
AM/FM Analog Broadcast Band Radio has been around forever, has the potential to sound good (AM can have better fidelity but that path was never really pursued in earnest) and is advertiser supported which enables the station to turn a profit after operating costs which include royalty fees.
XM Digital Broadcast Band Radio is the new kid on the block, offers good fidelity,is commercial free,is totally subscriber supported and I personally don't expect it will ever gain a real foothold that can compete head to head with FM or even AM even though touted as the replacement for analog radio much as the CD replaced analog audio.
Why ? because to be honest for most of us commercial radio is not only NOT an intrusion but since most of the listening is on the go in our cars or as background noise at work we actually listen to the local traffic reports, the local weather, local concert and event news, what local pub is having a bash, what specials are available locally. In short local radio is actually part of the community.
On the commercial free side you get usic, all the music all the time and that is it
BORING !
If I want that I would just get a 100 CD trunk loader and hit the "random" button !
Listening at work or while driving is NOT serious listening but background music to make the chore that much more enjoyable. If it were otherwise you would either wreck while driving or get nothing done while working so while you don't want actual crap sound you also don't require ultra-fidelity,just good jams to make the journey a pleasure.
Digital Radio for me personally is not worth the cost of admission and especially so when you consider I LIKE the adverts and have no need for a "silent hiss free background" in a situation where the ambient noise swamps any dynam,ic range anyway creating a situation where compression is actually an AID to listening rather than detriment.
I feel pretty much the same way about internet radio,I do not consider it an "A-system" format but rather a pleasant background so while I can handle a modest yearly fee if the provider a good one or if free some low profile scrolling adverts NO WAY would i be willing to spend large for the service when it would be a simple task to walk across the room and turn on the FREE radio......ads and all
*There is a side "C" but them I mostly disregard from any serious discussion 'cause this group is made up with "takers".That means they want everything for free, want no part of commercials or adverts intruding on THEIR life even if that is the only way the FREE service can operate and are always carping about THEIR rights as if free music is a given from birth,an entitlement just because no matter who has to work to provide it for their personal pleasure. That group i pretty much refer to as spoiled brats
There are no free rides and when it looks like there are be assured someone else is carrying your water-putting themselves out either in time spent (and time IS money folks) or out of pocket.
