Got mine from Thomann leporello as they were the cheapest at the time, excellent service received them 3 days after ordering from England, thoroughly recommended.

Do you need them new? If not you could check on a couple of forums, used this go for about $200 or about 100 BP. Assume $30 for S&H for a total of about 115 BP plus VAT. Might be worth a shot. Good luck. Actually Miguel I don't need them at all and neither am I in a hurry to get them. I'm very happy with the W5000s which sound great and give my head a rather fetching antique look and feel. I also find the prospect of a long burn in time a rather dreary prospect. I've sold my HD650s and I'll order the 701s to replace them as I sort of feel that it will be nice to have the option of closed and open cans. What was it that you didn't like about the W5000s? I'd be interested to know. With the HD 650s I simply left them plugged into a digital radio for a couple of weeks. Do you think that this will be adequate for burning in the 701s? get off your lame ass and answer fast

You're right, they give an excellent service. I guess my 701s will be here on Thursday or Friday. I understand that there's a great synergy between the 701s and the GS Solo. If I live beyond the burn in time for these cans I'll be interested in how pleasurable they are compared to my closed cans.

There's some for sale at 170 quid on ebay ... though you need to be careful that they aren't coming form the US, as there's the likelihood of import charges being applied. HMCE now charge duty VAT on all imported goods whether they were second hand or new. So beware of cheap 2nd hand goods bought off ebay from the US etc. There is a way to get you VAT and Duty back ... but involves form filling and providing evidenc eof repatriation of goods, which technically only happens to repaired items returned to the sender. DAMHIK-IJK,OK! [1] [1] Don't ask me how I know I just know, OK

My original post was in part an alert to anyone here who might have a burned in set of 701s for sale. The 701s on Ebay are American. As for your tip about avoiding VAT, I've reached the age where I have more money than time and anyway my social conscience would not allow me to avoid my taxes. After all, how's the Government going to pay for all those social workers to keep the underprivileged at pay if we all get up to such dodges?

Dont concern yourself about the burn in time for the 701s Leporello, IMO they are a great Headphone straight out of the box from brand new. I mainly use mine hooked up to an Xcan V3 with Mikes mods including the little Pinkie power supply and have loved the sound that this combination produces from day one. Mine have about 300hrs on them now and havent changed that much, so hopefully the sound will suit your taste to.

Thanks for the note of reassurance friend but having tried the 701s straight out of the box I hope I can expect a substantial improvement with burn-in. Compared to my well burned-in Audio Technica W5000s they sound tight and tinny to my ears. I use a green SOLO and with the W5000s I use a volume setting of between 10 and eleven, for the 701s I need the volume set between 12 and two. I do hope however, that Mike's estimate of a whole year is not going to be necessary before I can enjoy them fully. However, even in their present virginal state I find the 701s very comfortable and I know that I'm going to like them, hopefully sooner rather than later.

I've been running the 701s non stop now connected to a mushy radio station for about 40 hours with no sign of change. I can well understand why people might well give up on these 'phones before they've given them the time to burn-in. Last evening I wore the 701s for about an hour listening to a variety of music, modern jazz, blues, Bach and some others. After half an hour I began to feel that the 701s were not too bad for sound and good for comfort. I then changed to my ATH W5000s and realised just how tight and tinny the 701s sound at present. As previously mentioned, my cans are driven by a Green Solo that's been permanently powered on since I bought it some months ago. The combination of the W5000s and the Solo is to mine and my son's ears is magnificent. I've never heard recorded music of such quality before in my life. In the circumstances I suppose, the W5000s are a hard act to follow. However, without knowing why, despite their inadequacies in comparison to the well burned-in W5000s I like the 701s and shall perservere with their extended burn in period. My usual volume setting on the SOLO with the 701s is between 9 and 11 on the dial. To get the same volume on the 701s I need to set the volume between 12 and 2. For those of us mere mortals who listen to music rather than their 'phones this extended burn-in period is a pain in the arse. Perhaps I should have bought the DT770s?

Hi leporello, like you I have ATs, although the W1000 rather than the W5000 - and when I received my K701 was underwhelmed by their sound in comparison. I think you nailed it in two words, tight & tinny. I also have a green Solo with which I very much like the sound of the ATs. Point is, like Miguel, I found the K701 to take a veeery loooong time to sound acceptable to me. As you say, the ATs are a hard act to follow. After 12 months of ownership and some rather brutal treatment (see the GS1000 boy racers thread around 12 months ago), while still needing more twist of the dial than the ATs I do feel them to be a deal "looser" and more responsive - I still prefer the ATs generally, partly perhaps because their tonal response is so very close to my speakers, but I do find that with some recordings and in some moods that I will prefer the K701 and can find them quite acceptable for extended periods, but it always feels like a step up coming back to the ATs. BTW did you find the W5000 much of an improvement on the W1000 ?

BTW did you find the W5000 much of an improvement on the W1000 ? Thanks for the comment tq, it's reassuring that someone else with a similar set up shares my experience. I presume you were aware that I have owned a set of W1000s that I liked and sold on impulse to buy my W5000s. To be honest with you, I can't remember whether the sound of one was better or worse than the other. All I know for certain is that the W1000s turned this previous Sennheiser repeat customer into an Audio Technica fan. The leather ear pads of the W5000s are a real improvement over the "pleather" ones on the W1000s. I'm the 3rd owner of these W5000s and I'm fairly certain that I or my son will be their last. I can forgive the occasional creak from the headband. Oh well, the 701s are approaching 65 hours, I give them another listen in due course and continue hopefully.

Miguel, How could I do other than to heed your encouraging words and press on with the 701s well they've done more than 100 hours under assault from 'phone-in bores on a badly tuned radio station. Yesterday, feeling rather guilty at exposing my virgin cans to an endles stream of static and passionate drivel, I relented and switched to playing the Ultrasone sample CD on a continuous loop. It appears that my act of mercy has been rewarded. Either the neural receptors in my brain have been burned in or the 701s have changed for the better. Today I spent three hours listening to the 701s and have begun to enjoy them. I listened to some outrgeously brash blues, played by Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band on a CD called "The Whole Fam Damily" The Rev plays a mean steel guitar, his daughter a washboard and his son a kettle drum. From the CD they look a wierd family. Just my kind of people. For a trio they make a big fun sound that get's me smiling and tapping my feet. There's a lot of slide on the guitar that sounds great on the 701s combining musicality with razor sharp attack. I also listened to a recording of Callas singing "Un bel de vendremo" from Madam Butterfly, a few modern jazz classics,i.e, Zoot Sims, J.J. Johnson, Milt Jackson, Nina Simone and Gould's version of Bach's Goldberg Variations (I could clearly hear Gould humming as he played the piano, the variations on the harpsichord sounded good, but not as good as on the W5000s, in so far I could not hear the subtle feather pluck of the strings on the 701s. At this stage the 701s the harpsichord sounds a little too percussive. On the W5000s I can hear and feel the quill plucking the strings. But overall, I'm quite pleased with the progress the 701s or my ears are making. Anyway, I'm soldiering on with the 701s now with some pleasure. I presume that you and all the other audio wizards on these threads will solder on whilst I do so.

Nah! next you will need to re-cable the K701. That's the trouble with you audioholics, your posts all have the quality of voices from skid row us inviting innocent music lovers to join you. In the words of the song "The pig got up and slowly walked away." I shall do likewise as I've seen what's happened to Merton since he got his amplifier and Dt770s

harumph - wicked man - it's all your fault that I just ran off to amazon in search of the Rev whatsis groovabilly recording. Couldn't find it at first cause it's the whole fam "damnily" and search engines are so boringly pedantic. Which harpsichord version of the (presumably Goldberg) variations were you listening to ? - hope it was Trevor Pinnock - I've already got that one (and 2 different ones of the Gould) Yes, I did know you first had the W1000 and I have put the W5000 leather pads on my W1000 - agreed much more comfortable. Methinks thou dost protest too much - don't you have some Watchtower peddlers to BBQ

And you reckon Leporello is a wicked man ? What an intriguing idea, but I think he is probably too busy letting down the bicycle tyres of those clean shaven American lads.

Is it customary here in the Grotto that moderators are encouraged to abuse and ridicule we naive junior members? First Merton and now you sandyk What with this and the recent hit on my karma, I'm beginning to feel misunderstood and unloved here. Heaven knows I've tried. Since I've arrived here I've bought two sets of headphones and a Green SOLO. mrarroyo hints that I'm expected to re-cable my 701s and Merton's gone so far as to call me all sorts of rude names for my failure to buy a set of DT770s. What more can I do to be loved here? I may be an evil old bastard but I've got feelings and more than 124 hours on my 701s ;D ;D

leporello, I saw a pair of DT770 on the for sale forum at Head-Fi yesterday. You should get them to make Merton happy. Besides we love to spend other people's monies. 400hrs on 701s now. They've opened up beautifully. Great joy! Make Merton happy by buying the DT770s? Definitely not! Schadenfreude.

Well. I've continued with the 24 hour sound through my 701s and have been using them to listen to music, TV etc. To my surprise, or perhaps illusion, the 701s play louder, I can now listen to them at one or two points lower on the SOLO volume. Listening to the 701s is quite pleasurable but the longer I use them the more I want to use my W5000s. I shall keep the 701s and listen to them regularly as the burn-in proceeds, but I seriously doubt that they'll ever come close the physical comfort and musical embrace of my W5000s. I shall insist that my son continues to use the 701s to render the bangs and bumps of his on-line pixel slaughter. I shall continue to use the 701s as my pilot's headset in FSX as I buzz churches, chapels and royal residences in the skies of the English Home Counties. The roar of couple of Merlins should exercise the fiendish Hun diaphrams sufficiently to bring them to heel. This evening I'm giving my senses a treat by allowing myself an evening with the Stan Getz and others on W5000s... Here beneath the bough my spliff, my W5000s and thou beside me, singing in the wilderness and the wilderness becomes Paradise e'now. With apologies to Omar and that Fitzgerald bloke and thanks to those clever chaps who gave us Pearl Harbour. They make great sounding headphones. Miguel, I seriously begin to wonder whether in your apparent search for the Holy Grail in the headphone World that you had it in your hands until you let it pass to mine. Sure, the occasional creak in the headband is an imperfection but oh, the sound
