I'm contemplating buying a pair of SR60s for a close friend who's helped me through some pretty bad RL shit the last few months. She's a music lover but until recently didn't appreciate headphones. I wonder who introduced her to those ;D I have lent her a pair of PX-100s on permanent loan and she loves them. I also let her have a test ride on my Sennheisern HD595s and my AKG K701s through my Panasonic portable CDP and CMoy and those blew her away. Being a lass though she prefers the smaller PX-100s for practical reasons. i.e. they are to her mind, more comfortable, plus they don't mess her hair up A bit of research has led me to the Grado SR60s. They seem to be well respected and should have a more refined sound than the excellent little PX-100s. So, on to my questions. Do the SR60s really stack up as well against high end cans as the reviews suggest and how comfortable are they? Any hair mussing details would be useful too

The SR60s come with the comfy pads...plastic Grados with the comfys are actually really quite comfortable and rate very high on the usability scale IME.
I haven't heard the SR60s, but used to own the SR80s and currently own the entire Alessandro range of Grados. I suspect the SR60s will sound like a scaled-up version of the PX-100s.
If you are outside the USA you will get robbed blind for the SR60s - like GB£70 or something. I would suggest you buy her Alessandro MS1s (which come with the comfy pads) @ U$99 inc worldwide shipping. The MS1s are much punchier and refined sounding than one would expect for a hundred dollar Grado and easily own my old SR80s (which sounded very thin in comparison), which own the SR60 in turn apparently.
And after all that I sold my first pair of Senn HD650s because I preferred the SR80s, although I suspect that your friend will be disappointed if she expects a plastic Grado to beat a K701 etc in the analytical areas of soundstage, separation and refinement.

beyerdynamic dt770 pro are nice if you can get an amp that's not bass heavy and is a bit mids heavy.

Thanks for the replies guys. After checking out the MS1s I've ordered a pair. Provided that I don't get clobbered by customs they work out at £55 and even if I do get clobbered they still seem to represent good value. Hopefully she'll like them, if not I can have them LOL win win situation
